What a Treat!!
We had just completed our last day of our honeymoon tour of the Big Island before spending our final week on Maui. Our final evening and night on the Big Island was in Kona and the Hale Hualalai B & B. Lonn Armour our host greeted us and immediately made us feel at home. The Hale Hualalai was one of two living quarters for Lonn's B & B..A lovely entry with wet bar and fresh flowers and fruit greeted us..plenty of windows to allow the sunlight and the beautiful view of the harbor town and ocean below with a walkout lanai was an added plus. The rooms were tastefully done in soft colors with the island theme..Great Bath with shower and jet tub..Perfect way to spend our last night. Before we left the next morning, Lonn had prepared a fantastic breakfast..the best of our honeymoon..including Maui. Lonn had also prepared coffee (the 100% Kona coffee that he grows and picks himself) THE BEST cup of coffee we've ever had. This stay was just a treat and would recommend highly to anyone..Only wished we could have stayed longer.
The Best B&B Ever
We spent 3 nights at the Hale Hualalai B&B. First I'd like to say that we travel alot and stay almost exclusively in B&B's, and this one is the best!! Lonn is a wonderful host who, having worked as a fine dining chef for many years, has a keen understanding of hospitality. Also, because there are only two guest rooms, Lonn gives each guest individual attention. For example, I'm an early riser and like to have my coffee right away so he set up the coffee maker the night before so all I had to do was push the button. We spent every morning having great conversations and telling stories. But he's very sensitive so if you want your privacy, he would give you that too. Also, because he has lived on the island for 30 years, he gives great advice on where to go to have fun. Better than a guidebook. Everything was 5 star, the food, the rooms, the location, the view, and most of all the host.
Perfect location, wonderful food
Hale Hualalai was absolutely perfect for a much needed getaway for my husband and myself. Lonn was wonderful about arranging breakfast to fit our schedule. He even had breakfast ready at 5:50 one morning due to our fishing excursion. The breakfasts were absoultely delicious and that is something coming from us. ( we are pretty tough to please sometimes )He and Jean are extremely friendly and helpful. Now, the rooms. They are really large and airy. The bathroom is big and spotless! There is a jacuzzi and a glassed in shower. There is a private deck accesible through french doors in your room where you can watch the sun set over the mountain and ocean. Everything is very tastefully decorated and comfortable. There is also a larger deck for common use if desired. I honestly don't know why anyone would want to stay anywhere else. This place is relaxing and perfect. THere are even beach towels and boogie boards provided. We did not want to leave. Definately the best pick on the island. (hint: skip the resort restaurants, its not worth the money)
One word: AMAZING!
My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon. It was absolutely wonderful! Lonn is a great chef and the breakfasts he made were amazing. The fact that he finds out what you like and basically caters the breakfast to your tastes made this place a standout. The rooms themselves were also wonderful. Great ocean view lanai, jacuzzi bathtubs, shower, a lot of space, and very comfortable bed. Lonn also pays a lot of attention to detail since he provides each room with coolers (so you can take food to the beach), beach towels and mats, and even Hawaiian music CDs so you can get an extra Hawaiian ambiance in your room. What makes this place a standout is Lonn himself, who not only makes amazing meals, but also provides fresh Kona coffee, immediately fixes anything that may go wrong in your room (like a stubborn toilet), and has a wealth of knowledge about the island. We highly recommend this place and would love to go there again.
A perfect place to relax and enjoy
At the end of our trip to the hawaiian islands we stayed at Lonns place and we enjoyed it so much! There are two suites which are really big and nicely decorated, an excellent view over the westcoast, a private lanai and a jacuzzi in the bathroom.
The breakfast (served whenever you wish) is a highlight of the day- especially with Lonns home-grown Kona Coffee. Lonn knows the island perfectly and gives excellent advise for your daytrips.
A bed-and-breakfast you should not miss!
Hail to Hale Hualalai
My husband and I traveled to the Big Island on part of our vacation to Hawaii, and chose Hale Hualalai B&B after reading great reviews on Trip Advisor. We were extremely pleased with our choice. It is located about five minutes from downtown Kailua-Kona. Its location allowed us to see where locals live, with easy access to the "tourist" town below. Wonderful if you want to stay away from the noise of busy travelers. Both rooms are located off the lanai of the main house - no walking through a hotel lobby! Our room was modern and beautifully decorated with that "island" feel. Both the shower and whirlpool bathtub were enjoyable. Other nice amenities were CD/player radio, TV/VCR (we watched the videos we had shot of the island) bar with refrigerator (nice for drinks and snacks), and a very private lanai where your only view is the mountainside and ocean. At night we turned on the radio, closed the windows facing the main house, and enjoyed relaxing on the lanai - Lonn said he never even heard the radio. I am including pictures from our lanai, but please check the pictures of the room on his website. There is no air conditioner, which we were concerned about at first, but no need. There is a nice breeze all day, and it was so cool at night. I had the best sleep I've had in months under the thick covers of the plush king size bed. Best of all was our laid back and gracious host, Lonn. He gave us fun and useful advice for our touring, and made the most delicious and filling breakfasts (no need to stop for lunch after those!) If you want to avoid crowds, noise, and parking problems, I would definately recommend this B&B to feel like you are on an adventure and not "your average tourist"!
Far exceeds expectations
It's obvious that this place is a labor of love for owner Lonn.
The B&B is on a small coffee plantation where Lonn actually grows his own coffee and fruit. It's up on the hillside and the temperature was very comfortable while we were there (late June). It's only 10 minutes to Kailua-Kona by car.
There are only two guest rooms. They are not part of the main house, but instead open off of a large deck shared with the main house. Each room is large and private, with a sitting area, a private balcony (nice view of the coffee bushes and ocean below), a hot tub, a large separate shower, TV, and a king size bed. There were also a lot of small extras: candles, matches, a small stereo with Hawaiian music, a small refrigerator, a counter area (with wine glasses, a corkscrew, a knife, a cutting board), etc. For beach days, there were also beach towels, mats, and a functional styrofoam cooler.
The personable Lonn (a chef and caterer) made excellent hot breakfasts that were definitely a cut above the usual help-yourself-to-a-muffin. He even took requests (made in advance). The coffee and some of the fresh fruit was from the plantation. Lonn was fun to talk to during breakfast, had some good advice about sight-seeing, and was forever making sure our mugs were full of his home-grown coffee. Breakfast was on the main deck, with a view of the plantation and ocean.
Lonn also loves talking about his plantation, and we got a tour.
If we have the chance, we won't hesitate to stay here again.
My wife and I spent two lovely nights at Lonn's bed and breakfast. In addition to being a great chef (he worked at Merriman's in Wailoa), Lonn is a great host and guide. The room we stayed was large and comfortable with a great view of the Kona coast. The food was terrific. We felt right at home and although we stayed at other B&B's -- some of which were quite nice -- the relaxed feel of Lonn's place made it our favorite of the trip.
a very nice place
We stayed at the Kula suite (on the left side of the house from the entrance) September 12-14. The suite is large, spacious, and beautifully decorated, with a large jacuzzi tub and a good size lanai with stunning views of the Kona coast. The first day, Lonn cooked his signature french toast with apples and walnuts (delicious). The next day, he made us omelets stuffed with vegetables and sausage. We also had his 100% Kona coffee. He showed us his coffee trees. We bought several bags of coffee from him as gifts. We also loved his pets (dog named Lava and a kitty named Knucklehead). Would definitely stay here again.
