Looking for recommendations for a Condo in the Kona area. Middle of April. Clean and Quiet is more important than ritzie. Have not been to the Big Island at all. I've been reading a bunch of guide books, but nothing grabs me yet. Thanks for the input !!
We loved the Kona Bali Kai. We had an oceanfront room and when they say oceanfront, they mean it! It was a mere 20 yards from the back of the building to the water. And what a view.
However, there are a few warnings. The condo units are not air conditioned but because of the constant ocean breeze, we found it very comfy. Because you have to keep the windows open to enjoy, you also get the roar of the pounding surf. We found it to be a little loud the first night but it faded into obscurity thereafter and we actually started to enjoy it. If you are a very light sleeper, it may be too much.
The units are older but found them to be clean and comfy. We thought their oceanfront location was ideal and will definitely stay there again.
We have also stayed at the Royal Sea Cliff Resort. Although we did not have an oceanfront condo, because of its location on the slope, most rooms have a view down to the ocean from their patios. We liked it.
We have also stayed at the Keahou Beach Resort. This is a hotel and while all their rooms are oceanview, this hotel's location is on the very outskirts of Kona's southern edge. It makes it a little bit of a drive to get to the action in Kona.
On top of that, the hotel next door has been vacant for years and a bit of an eyesore. However, this was back in 2002 and there was a company planning on remodelling it. Not sure if it has been done yet.
There are some great reviews of condos and hotels in The Big Island Revealed guidebook. Be sure to pick it up.
My recommendation is not right in Kona, but in the village of Holualoa. We stay every year for a couple weeks at Holualoa Inn. It's a beautiful bed and breakfast up in the mountain overlooking the ocean. It's very quiet, great conversation around the breakfast table, and fabulous breakfasts to get your day started right. We've been going to the Big Island for 11 years. I find Kona a bit too noisey and chaotic with all the traffic. From Holualoa it's only about 10 minutes to get to Kona. Big Island Revealed is the best!
