Travel Tips for Holualoa

Kona Coffee Beans

by yooperprof

When you think of Kona, you think of coffee. This small track of land has become internationally famous for the high quality coffee beans that are grown here. I was excited to see the source of morning pleasure. This was the first time in my life that I'd been able to be "up close and person" with coffee beans still on the vine.

These were growing right on the side of SR 180 in Holualoa.

View of the coast

by yooperprof

Holualoa is on SR 180, several hundred feet above SR 11, the major highway around the island. The elevation here is about 1400 feet above sea level, and there are several places from which to view the coastline far below. It's cooler and greener up here, and both coffee beans and macadamia nuts seem to appreciate the climate.

Artsy Village in the Hills above Kailua Kona

by yooperprof

My bet is that you'll never find a urinal with a better view than the remarkable elevated bathrooms at the Kona Hotel in Holualoa. You reach it via an elevated walkway that juts out the back of the Inn. There are amazing views of the coastline far below. A true "must see"!

Holualoa is an arty community 1400 feet above Kailua-Kona. It's on SR 180, and there are also decent roads that link it directly with the larger town below. Holualoa is somewhat "off the beaten track," and all the more special for that. There are a few interesting shops and galleries here, but what's most special about the place is the sense of a "real Hawaiian" past here that's been lost in the more glamorous resort communities of the coast. That "real Hawaiian" past is epitomized by the small scale and humble Kona Hotel, a functioning B & B that stands out along the side of the road in Holualoa.
