Lake Waiau
by SWheat
best not to go when there's snow but in the summer, there's Lake Waiau at the top of the summit. it's the only lake on the Big Island. it's an old glacial lake; very small. but the stories are that hawaiian women used to keep umbilical cords and throw them into the lake when someone went up. the lake is 'mystical' and well worth the adventure if you have the time to do it right. go early mornings before the clouds move in.
Honoka'a

"Midway Between Hilo and Kona"
Honoka'a is exactly half the distance from Hilo to my work place in Kona. Honoka'a is another sleepy town you'll find on the way. In fact, it's probably the only town with a little village along the Hamakua coast. This area is probably famous for pastures and Tex Drive In. This is the area with the nearest hospital between Hilo and Waimea so don't get hurt anywhere else!

This is a green house next to Tex.
...Honokaa...

HONOKAA is sitting on a hillside just off Highway 19, it commands spectacular ocean wiews. Homwtown retailers and crafters occupy clapboard painted stores. Proprietors spill out into the sidewalk, sitting on chairs and doorsteps. Antique hounds can sniff out a find at one of several stores capitalizing on collectibles.
