Hale Kona Kai Condominiums

Our condo #213's lanai hung over the ocean!!
We stayed at Hale Kona Kai #213 for 2 weeks and were amazed, we have never have been this close to the ocean in our lives, even on a cruise ship. The lanai hung over the ocean! We saw turtles right below our lanai every day! Every morning at 8AM the dolphins did spins and raced across the bay, we just sat on the lanai with coffee and mango and watched them. There was a big teak chaise on the lanai which we loved sitting on and reading. The condo was very nice, granite kitchen with everything for cooking including table cloths, lots of china and loads of drink ware... we did mai tais every night. Bedroom was beautiful with nice art and a great comfy bed. Living room was bright and cheerful, flat screen TV and loads of books on Hawaii!! The complex is very nice, it is small and on a side street off of the main street that goes through town, so it is very quiet, all we could hear was the ocean. The pool was nice, no one really used it, we used it one night and had it to ourselves. Most everyone seemed to go next door to the lagoon where there were turtles and fish. The lady in the office was very helpful, she directed us to a nice beach that had loads of turtles and also directed us to the Royal Kona Resort next door to Hale Kona Kai where we had a nice dinner. She also showed us some of the other units there, I think we will return to unit 213... We liked the units ending in 12 and 13 because those had the bigger lanais and hung over the ocean, however we did like some of the other units she showed us (405 and 411) and would stay in one of those if 213 was not open. Oh by the way, the bedrooms and living rooms are oceanfront! Very unusual for condos in Kona. We walked into town a few nights, it was not a long walk maybe 10 minutes. We walked to the farmers market, which was especially nice. We booked through Triad, spoke with Adeline at konanow.com 800 421 3696. She sent us directions from the airport which was very helpful since we got in so late. She also sent us a list of activities and directions to the market and beaches. It was an easy drive to most things that we wanted to do, we found this location very nice yet off of the beaten path. We have stayed at other condos in Kailua-Kona and none are as nice as this complex especially for the price.
Unique Quality: 10 feet to the ocean. Amazing sunsets. Sounds of the ocean. Bed room and living room oceanfront. Turtles and dolphins viewed from the lanai. Clean condos and friendly staff. Walk to town. Walk to beach.
Directions: Near town and next door to the Royal Kona Resort, down the street from Huggos.
Clean & Affordable
Hale Kona Kai is not a resort. It's a four-story building of 39 one bedroom condos, right on the water in Kailua-Kona Town. We stayed in unit number 408, which was very clean and comfortable. The air-conditioned unit was carpeted and tiled, with a full kitchen with granite countertops and a nice lanai (balcony) facing the pool and ocean. We chose it mainly because of the location and price. The location is right in town, within walking distance to all restaurants & shops on Ali'i Drive, the main drag in Kailua. The price was $125/night, through Triad Mgmt's web site, halekonakaicondos.com, $10 off the listed price.
Unique Quality: I wouldn't call Hale Kona Kai outstanding but it was certainly fine, especially for the price. It's definitely a good value. However, I think I'd avoid the unit numbers ending in -09 and also -11 because they have views only of the Royal Kona Resort next door. All of the rest of the units have great views of the ocean though I can't vouch for the condition of all of the units since they are all individually owned and maintained. Each unit has one assigned parking spot, so parking is not a problem. It's also located on a small side street off of Ali'i Drive, so you don't hear all the traffic noise like some of the condos on Ali'i. All we could hear was the ocean but I didn't find it too loud like I've seen some people complain about on other travel web sites. The pool is small but clean and serviceable. If you're not looking for glitz, but simply a cozy home away from home on the Big Island, right in Town then I can certainly recommend Hale Kona Kai. If you like the extra amenities that a resort can provide then I'd say try one of the resorts in Keauhou or Kohala.
Directions: Hale Kona Kai is right in Kailua-Kona Town and right on the ocean.
More about Hale Kona Kai Condominiums
Stayed for a week Sept 1-8 and what an amazing place ! This condo has everything you can think of even down to the cracked black pepper in kitchen and umbrellas for those night rain showers! This lovely family has thought of everything you may need and it is there. A real gem and a true piece of paradise. Great lagoon next door to swim in with tropical fish. It is within walking distance of great restaurants try the Kona Beach Club on Waterfront Row had been open just two days and Lava Java is great for breakfast and fresh pineapple juice. Hawaiian Blue helicopter with the EcoStar ones over the coast and volcano a must $$ but worth it and the Mauna Loa Summit Adventure just awesome. Happy to answer any questions we just loved it! Thank you Adeline!
nice looking but a problem
The condo and complex are as pictured. Beautiful views and comfortable surroundings would have made this a stellar place to stay. The parking was very convenient and the laundry facilities were first rate.
We however found the condo (#313) had a very pervasive musty odor. We tried airing the place out and using air fresheners but to no avail.
We stayed for 4 out of our planned 7 nights then left to stay where the the breathing was easier. I understand that being that close to the water has it's inherent problems and I see from the other postings that there is no mention of an odor. Hopefully ours was just an isolated problem
Great Views, crashing waves, terrific sunsets
We stayed in Unit 303 which we rented throught CJ Kimberly realtors across the street from the complex. They do charge a security deposit of $300 which I would have preferred not to pay but we were staying at the complex right before the Iron Man competition and some of the other units were taken. Unit 303 was recently remodeled and is in excellent condition. The washer/dryer facilities are on each floor of the complex which is really handy and while it is near Ali drive we were not bothered by the traffic noise. The pool area is small but overlooks the ocean and we had no trouble getting lounge chairs. The views are outstanding, we saw the cruise ships, surfers, boaters etc and in my mind, for the price, it was a bargin. There is no swimming beach on the complex but since this was our first time to Hawaii we were more interested in site seeing. We had a one bedroom unit for the 2 of us and it was surely more than adequate. If you are a Costco member by all means buy your gas there, they were as much as 50cents a gallon cheaper.
We would most surely stay there again.
Incredible place at an incredible price!
We spent our anniversary week in unit #313 (9/29-10/6/2005) and were ready to spend the rest of our lives there! What a beautiful unit with breathtaking views. I noticed an earlier occupant of #313 mentioned a musty odor......we found the unit spotlessly clean, wonderfully remodeled and "upgraded" and no odor whatsoever. We will return again and again!
#204 Should Not be Rented Until Fixed Up
This unit should not be rented until the owners do some major renovations! The ceiling is blistered and crumbling, the ceramic tiles were two depths in the bathroom because they did not finish putting the new tile on and what they had put on was cracked, the ceramic grout in the kitchen was not completed, the bath towels were rusty and had ragged edges on them, the curtains were moldy and did not hang on the hooks because the hook holders on the rods are rusted through, the walls were crumbling away and blistered in the corners and by the bedroom windows, the stove was chipped, the silverware was rusty and needed to be washed prior to use and the worst part was that the kitchen cupboard was termite infested. There was even a whole in the cupboard due to the termites. Housekeeping was aware of this problem prior to our arrival but we were still placed in this unit. We had termite larva (little worms) on our counters every morning and every night during our stay. We also had termite larva in one of the cupboards. Since this was by the food, we chose not to cook there. Since this vacation was for our 25th wedding anniversary, we were very disappointed to have spent this money and found the place in such disarray. The positive of this unit: the view is fabulous and the chairs on the lanai were very comfortable. The coffee pot was a Krups which made good coffe. The pool was great also, but you can not bring food or beverages into the area. We intended to have pizza and drinks by the pool and watch the sunset one night, but we were not able to do this. We went on our trip with two other couples who stayed in units 311 and 407 and their places were great - clean and well maintained. Unit 311 in particular is awesome! I would recommend Hale Kona Kai to others but do not stay in unit 204!!
Private and wonderful!
If you are looking for a low key, private Hawaiian vacation with fantastic snorkel and scuba....this is the place! We stayed at Hale Kona Kai condo's, which were fantasticly located, although a bit in need of update. All in all a great vacation.
Not perfect but loved it
After reading the negative review of unit 204 where we were to stay, my husband was so concerned that he called SunQuest to find out the status of the unit. He was assured they were spraying for termites and had repairs out for bid. We were still dubious, but decided to go ahead and stay there. Well, we had ten wonderful days there. It's true that there are repairs to be made, weird, unfinished tiling in the bathroom, etc., but not to the extent that they interfered with our enjoyment of the unit overall. Outweighing the negatives were our location right on the ocean with the best balcony furniture in the complex, a fully furnished kitchen with SubZero refrigerator, Dansk dinnerware, blender, coffee bean grinder, beach chairs to take to the beaches, coolers, great water pressure in the shower, various things that people had left. Plus the location was perfect. We could easily walk to town and Huggo's, a good restaurant on the ocean. Another huge advantage is that it's not on the main road through Kona so it's much more secluded and quiet. If you have a car you can drive right down the road to the south to a great beach with great snorkeling. Two disclaimers: (1) I would describe my housekeeping as relaxed since I live with cats and boys, so maybe I'm not too finicky. (2) We had to sleep with earplugs in since we slept with the windows open at night and the surf was really loud.
Look out for #208
We stayed in Unit #208 which we booked through Sunquest vacations. This was the only unit available with a King size bed. We walked into a musty smelling room. We opened the windows and patio door, but that did not seem to help, so thankfully we had A/C which help aleviate the smell. The bathroom was in need of updating. Rust on the fixtures and debris in the water from the faucet when we first ran the water. The door was cracked and paint peeling. The king bed was actually 2 twins pushed together. The carpet in the living area was very dirty. The view from the lanai was wonderful and the pool seemed to be well maintained. However the rest of the condo complex needed some serious repairs. The lanai for unit #212 was held up by 2x4s. Another lanai had yellow caution tape around it as part of it had fallen off. This place could be so wonderful if it was just updated. We looked at Unit #209 and it was in great shape. I quess it really depends on what unit you get. The proximity to the ocean could not be any better. The furniture on the lanai did have some mold on it. We won't return to this complex. I could not find any pictures of this unit other than those on Sunquest's web site.
