Great location
I've stayed in various units at the Kona Makai on every trip to the Big island. Very well kept grounds and friendly people have made it one of my favorite places. While it's a couple miles down the road from town, it's still convenient to Kona as well as Keahou and the beaches along Alii Drive. And if you are planning a trek to the volcano, it's nice to be able to avoid Kona's traffic since you are already south of the city.
Unique Quality: The best units are the oceanfront ones, especially 6-301. A wraparound lanai and stunning sunsets can be viewed in relative privacy since you don't have to look out into the courtyard. You can see whales and dolphins on occasion right off the lanai. And the sound of the surf is amazing. Don't miss the "breathing" rocks at the water's edge!
