Outrigger Hotel - Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

A beautiful, elegant, and spacious resort located on 18 acres of ocean-front lava rock beach that overlooks stunning Keauhou Bay. The hotel and resort is encircled by well groomed gardens that create a nice private space with tall coconut palms, tropical blossoms, soft grasses, and lush lauae ferns. Inside the hotel are roomy condo units with open-beamed ceilings and spacious covered balconies with breath-taking views of the sea. Condos are available in 1 and 2 bedrooms, or a 2-bedroom with loft units. Each room is breeze cooled with ceiling fans, though some units have air conditioning upon request. Free wireless internet is available in the lobby, swimming pool area, and other areas of the resort. The hotel is home to three swimming pools, five barbeque grills, two tennis courts, connection to the Kona Country Club which has a 36-hole golf course, and is connected to a public beach which is well-known as a spectacular snorkeling site on Kealakekua Bay as well as the Puuhonua o Honaunau National Histori Park. Resort requires a two-night minimum to book a room and a three-night minimum on U.S. holiday weekends. While I did not stay at the hotel and only visited the resort during the day - I was impressed, even though I thought it was rather expensive. Cannot comment on staying in the condo-rooms, but the resort was A+. Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

Quiet yet still close to Kailua

Kona coast at its best here. Tropical setting and large condos. Make sure to get ocean front, especailly along the little bay to the south. Outrigger prices a bit high for what you get

Unique Quality: They have lovely condos on lovely grounds. 3 swimming pools and great golf course nearby. Lots of ocean front units, and if you can get on the side where the little bay is the views are even nicer. Gated entrance with 24hr attendant. Close to Keauhou shopping center for groceries at KTA and Longs Drugs store. A few restuarants too.

More about Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona

Nice surprise!

by TripAdvisor Member calinurse

Stayed November 19--23. Our 2 bedroom condo was large, comfortable, homey. The master bedroom was large, and had a huge walk-in closet dressing area and separate bathrooom. I assume all the 2 bedroom condo floor plans are like this. It was so much better than expected!
We were in a "fairway view" condo, very reasonabley priced from Orbitz (booked as Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona) at $156/night. There is a large lanai outside the living/dining area, and a separate smaller lanai outside the master bedroom. The condos are individually owned so each is decorated dfferently. Ours, #302, was lovely, with a real sense of tranquility and aloha spirit. I think it'd be great for a family with young children, as there was a large lawn area right outside it that bordered the golf course. There's a large kitchen area, washer and dryer, large living/dining area...wow!
Next time I would get an ocean view unit. We could sort of hear the ocean, but it would have been even better to hear it crashing right below our little home.
Staff were very helpful. Only problem was a shortage of towels. (They change towels and empty trash every day, with full cleaning every 3 days.) Once we mentioned it, three different people showed up within an hour--each carrying a pile of bath towels!
We used the ($10/ night) air-conditioning only once. The ceiling fans and breezes kept us comfortable, though it was at least 80 F outside.
For breakfast try the Aloha Theater Cafe in the small town just to the south of Keauhou. Sit on the lanai, which overlooks the ocean. It is delightful!
No other tourist recommendations that you won't find in a guidebook, other than to avoid driving out of town any time after sunset. We drove from Waimea back to Kailua one night just after sunset and it was frightening--poor lighting along the two lane road, pitch black, glaring oncoming lights. It felt great to get back to the condo!

Loved It!

by A TripAdvisor Member

This condominium was great. The staff was nice to everyone and the pools were great too! The only thing i ouwld complain about is that you could wear your swimming suit into the outside restaurant. Since it's right next to the pool...and I mean within 10 feet you should have been able to wear it. Except for that there is nothing to complain about. The rooms were very clean and the lanai had a beautiful veiw of the golf course and lot's of trees. We had mongooses running around and under the condo and we fed them bread. They are so cute. I would go back to this condo anytime!

Loved the Unit 1603

by A TripAdvisor Member

We rented unit 1603 from the owners. the condo was very nice. With excellent view and good furniture and bed. We had good time there and would recommend it highly, unit did not have any AC but after sleeping there we realized that it is not needed.

love kanaloa - rent from an owner

by TripAdvisor Member newportmom

have stayed at the kanaloa a few times now - love the complex - we always rent directly from an owner (this time unit 2904 from aloha condos - great location) and stay right on the water - this complex is nice, quiet, with friendly staff and great pools - my son amused himself hunting and catching outdoor geckos every day and recruited many other new friends as a result. the best snorkeling beach in Kona is right down the street (at the blue church) - turtles swim right up to you and bump into you to move you out of the way! - (we loved this snorkeling much better than that found at huanamua bay in Oahu) and the kanaloa is right next to a harbor where you can fish, swim and take boat tours or rent kayaks - way convenient - never really even needed to drive to town (five minutes away). Definately rent from an owner though - makes all the difference in the experience - the privately owned condos are far superior to the property managed ones.
make sure to allow at least a full day to drive to the volcano and watch the lava flow at night - awesome experience (tiring, long and tricky walk across lava to see the flow though - be prepared!)

Beautiful condo

by A TripAdvisor Member

Just returned from a 8 day stay at the Kanaloa at Kona, we had a two bedroom condo with ocean view near the pool. The view was lovely and the pool was quiet and closed at 6pm so there were not people in it at night. The whole complex is quiet and maintained very well. Lovely grounds. Our Condo had brand new carpet and all furniture was new and the kitchen was well equiped. My family of 5 loved this condo.. My only gripe was the fact that AC was not included and for the price it should have been. cooled off at night with the doors and windows open, but being August it got very warm during the day and somtimes into the night.. Otherwise great place with friendly staff..

We had a great stay (September 2004)

by A TripAdvisor Member

We rented a Condo through an owners group and were pleasantly surprised.

Not only was the unit fully equipped, the view from the lanai was exactly as shown in the virtual tour!

We enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle of the town, the sight and sound of the waves crashing on the lava rock shore was one of the best things about the unit.

The Time of my Life!

by A TripAdvisor Member

Our stay in unit 1603 was more than we dreamed of. A Lanai overlooking the ocean, plenty of amenities, emaculate conditions and informative books and maps to boot! It was particularly nice to have the refrigerator, washer/dryer and all the things previous guests had written and left for us. Let's not forget the beautiful views of the ocean sunset, golfcourse and lava formations with white coral speckled throughout. This is the way to go! Reasonably priced too! Thanks....it was the time of my life!

Wonderful View

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed in a privately owned condo unit #2904 that was booked through Aloha Condos. The condo was an oceanfront unit and we had a wonderful, unobstructed view of the ocean and enjoyed the sounds of the waves crashing into the lava beds. Also, a great breeze picked up every afternoon to keep us cool. The condo unit was updated and clean with comfortable furniture and updated amenities. We enjoyed the location, close enough to Kona to get there quickly, but far enough away to get away from the busyness. The grounds were well kept and the pools not to busy. There was also an adult only pool that we used to enjoy some quite reading time. We would love to come back again soon!

Great Place

by A TripAdvisor Member

Just arrived home last night from the Big Island. The Kanaloa at Kona was a great place to stay. We had a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit. We rented through a travel agent/package tour. The unit was clean and the kichen was equiped with all we needed. The 6 of us didn't miss the A/C. You're in Hawaii, who needs A/C?? I slept on the roll out and believe it or not, it was quite comfortable. The kids loved the pools. One closes at 6pm because of the restaurant. That is the ocean view pool. It would have been nice to have been able to have a mai tai while watching the sunset in the pool. I recommend just having a bar not a restaurant in that location. The food.. I give it a D-.
The Kanaloas location it close to everything. 5-10 to snorkeling. 10 min. to downtown. 2 min. to the grocery store. If you're a first time visitor, go on a bus tour around the island. Very relaxing, and informative. We used Pleasant vacations. Ron was a great guy/driver. I even took my two children on the bus. 10 and 5 yrs. old. they enjoyed it as well.

Unit 2904 Great Condo and Price

by TripAdvisor Member Timdeana

We stayed in Unit 2904 in November and were very pleased. For $125/night the place was spotless and had everything we needed. It is a 1BR ocean-front on the 2nd floor and was very spacious. You can easily drive to town, but there is nothing within walking distance. It is very peaceful. Free Wi-fi at the pool and clubhouse. Several pools, including 1 adult-only which we loved. Grills for everyone to use. Has washer/dryer and they even supplied detergent/softener. Right on the ocean with pretty grounds, but be aware that this is a lava beach not a sand/swimming/snorkeling beach. Condo is non-smoking and did not smell of smoke at all and I'm very sensitive to that. Sunsets on the lanai were fabulous; everyone who's seen the pictures says "They're just like on the postcards." We rented through a website that handles condos on several islands and were much happier than it sounds like a lot of reviewers have been by going through Outrigger; I guess it depends on which unit you get. No AC but we didn't miss it in November with the breeze off the ocean. If you want to park it here, never drive anywhere, play in the ocean on sand, and have everything within walking distance this is NOT for you. If you want a great homebase to explore the Big Island and return to when you're tired, I highly recommend this place.

Home rental in the Kona area

by no1mimi

6 non-smoking adults (grandparents, parents and two college age granddaughters)wish to rent a home for 12 days the end of July, 2007. Does anyone have good or bad experience with a rental agency or a private individual? I'm particulary interested in the Prince agency which whom I've spoken.

Is a condo OK? We rented a large condo near Kona for 9 nights in March. There were 6 adults. It has a huge master bedroom, with a bathroom/shower/jacuzzi that is gigantic. Also, another bedroom and bathroom, and a loft with twin beds. It was a privately-owned condo at Kanaloa at Kona. We loved it! You can see it at www.konaonthebeach.com/solitude.html

The owner was very easy to work with, very pleasant and helpful, sending us a book about the Big Island, maps, and more. Our view of the ocean from the lanai was beautiful. It was quiet, had a great pool, and is a few minutes away from everything in Kona. We were surprised at how large it was.

One thing to consider is that when you come in the front entrance, you have to go up some stairs.

Good luck!

David

By the way, I had forgotten to mention that the unit is air-conditioned, and we were charged nothing extra for it! The owner just asked that we turn it off when we are out of the condo. The property is called Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona, owned and operated by Outrigger, but many of the units are privately owned. Tripadvisor.com has very good reviews. Most of the negative ones have to do with either no A/C or being charged extra.

We rented a 3 bedroom house just a few minutes drive south of "downtown" Kona using VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner). The house was nice, nothing special but very clean and had everything we needed: full kitchen with all dishes & utensils, lanai with BBQ, good sized living & dining rooms, 2 bathrooms. It was not on the water but was close enough and the price was right! Here's the url for the listing:
