Patey's Place Hostel: Definite thumbs up choice
  • Satisfaction:
  • By scout_vagabond on December 15, 2006
  • Here's a place that's undergone magical transformation and has become destination quarters rather then a last resort bunkhouse.

Clean, friendly, helpful, relaxed, central....what was once a bug infested place with 'iffy' personsell is not a home away from home.

Internet, laundry, hammocks, welcoming lanai....all little improvements that go a long way towards making a comfortable stay (as well as safe). I'm hanging here with my wireless lap top right now whereas before it would have been 'wake up and get the hell out'.

This is your affordable, comfortable choice for the kona area....bikes rentals, easy walking to Alii Drive and other ammenities, plus the Hele On bus will take you to other destinations of the island.

Making a hostel your choice saves money so you can afford a car rental, plus you're going to meet other travellers and learn the ropes from them and the staff, rather then the cold atmosphere of most hotels where connecting with guests is like plugging AC into DC.

It's all about the experience, n'est pas? You'll get a good one at Patey's Place.

Patey's Place Hostel: Great place to stay, more than a hostel

  • ALSO known as KOA Wood HALE. Stayed twice my last time through Big Island. An older grey-haired single woman traveling solo, not a rastafarian or rainbow person 8-)- very happy with location, room, amenities, staff attention. Not what I thought of as a hostel.. Private Room in a shared 2 BR apt, so access to Full kitchen, living room with TV, DVD player & movies to rent., full bath. View of ocean from lanai/porch- hammock, bbq grill, great book trade library available. One night other room empty, other times lodgers were quiet congenial people. Many world travelers colme through. Very clean, spiffy. Relaxed, Good aloha, Good lodging value, would recommend, will return. One night neighbors (not hostel lodgers) were noisy, this is exception.

  • Koa Wood Hale...the new Pateys Place - Kailua-Kona
    Koa Wood Hale...the new Pateys
    Place
    by suprnaut
Owner apparently bought Koa Wood Hale across the street from the old Pateys Place and made the new place a joint property...then sold the old Pateys Place....good thing! New Pateys Place is 75-184 house number on same street. Manager is a chill guy named Zero....plays the roots reggae all day, but just in the office....two internet terminal, laundry machines, bicycles, great party deck on second floor with BBQ....dorms have 4 bunks each....in good shape and super clean. Well equipped kitchens and living area....
    Semi-private rooms upstairs are sweet!

Way better than the old property, and the vibe is much friendlier. Would definitely recommend this hostel to anybody, even people that are not used to hostels.

party deck upstairs is a great place to catch sun in the day, watch cruise ship in harbor (nice ocean- and sunset-views!) and have a BBQ
Couple of blocks to Ali'i Drive, so easy to walk to in-town fun. White Sands beach 2 miles away--easy bike ride with bikes available at hostel.

....residential area, not too much road noise or nosey pedestrian traffic. Waling distance to grocery stores, Wal-Mart, bus to Hilo side
