Recommendations for oceanfront condo

by ClevelandMom

I'll be staying in Kailua-Kona Feb. 7-12, 2009 and am looking for an oceanfront condo with either 2 or 3 bedrooms. It will be me, my husband, my mother and my 2 year old son. So, either a 2 bedroom with a pull out or spare bed, or a 3 bedroom. I've received quotes from the following properties that have availability. Have you stayed in any of these or can you recommend one?

Alii Villas

White Sands Village

Kona Bali Kai

Keauhou-Kona Surf and Racquet (Townhouse)

I am also looking for availability at Sea Village or Banyan Tree, however the above properties are the ones who have already gotten back to me so far. We are not looking for anything fancy, something clean, with 1000 square feet or more, and close enough to the ocean that we can hear the waves. Plus, something where our two year old will feel free to run around.

Mahalo!

We ended up reserving a house from Kona Sunsets Vacation Rentals. They have some nice locations!

We stayed at this beautiful, spacious condo. The owner was easy to work with. The photos will show you the view of the water. There is a pool and lots of grass at the property for kids. We loved it!

Thanks for the responses!

After some additional research, we've decided to stay at the Keauhou-Kona Surf and Racquet. If it turns out well, I'll put up a tip after our trip.

by pacificsurf

You have to try to go surfing at Pyramid Rock or North Beach on the Marine Corps Base. Get someone who lives on the base to get you on cause you can't get on without a sponsor. But it's the best surf spot on that side of the island. EVERYTHING< WEATHER< WOMEN< SCHOOL< BBEEAACCHH>>>>>>>>

Kailua-Kona Tip

Standing up on Kilauea, next to the crater of Halemaumau. This crater used to be full of lava even at the beginning of the 20th century. It´s considered the home of Goddess Pele, and ceremonies are held in her honour. There is no more lava today, and a good road runs right around. It´s not dead though: there´s still smoke coming from numerous vents, and the sulfur smell is in the air....

When trekking out to visit the Kilauea National Park, you might want to first do some research on Pelé. Leave an offering at a crater, or merely throw a flower over the rim, and she will know you respect her and mean her well. But come prepared with your own offering: it is extremely kapu (taboo) to remove anything from Pelé's domain! Do not pick her flowers to offer to her, and never take sand or other items away with you! Locals can talk-story for hours about the travesties befallen clueless travellers who have not heeded these warnings!

Packing List

by slabeaume

A jacket will be needed if you plan to go to the volcanoe, otherwise, short sleeves and shorts (and swim suits) are fine. Lots of waterproof Bullfrog sunscreen. A 35 mm camera, a digital video camera, a digital still camera, and an underwater camera----at least if you're a photo hound like I am. Snorkel gear!

The Painted Church

At St. Benedict's Painted Church you may find no one on duty and have the wonderful church all to yourself. The inside is colorfully painted and has many murals of biblical or other religous significance. There is a stand out front with lots of interesting knick-knacks (many religious) to browse. If you want one you just leave the amount of money posted for it and then just take the item!

Many people take Hwy 11 south from Kailua to Hwy 160 at the Honaunau post office down to the Pu'uhonua City of Refuge National Park and go right on by the turn off for the painted church. A little more than a mile from the post office is a turnoff on the right side of the road that parallels the main road for a short distance. Less than mile down that road on the right is the Painted Church!
