Golf in Kona

by paco5133

How much should I expect to pay for a round of golf (and I need to rent clubs) in Kona near the Marriot resort in Waikoloa? Also, what is the best area to go scuba diving in?

Probably 200-300

Can be less.

Paco,

If you are traveling to the Marriot in mid-July, I'm guessing you already know about the Rainbow Rally being hosted there on the 10th. I'm with the San Fransisco chapter and many of us are going to a spa on the 11th. If you want to go just drop me a line. I'll look into setting up group diving. XOXO!

Always Pretty in Pink!

Kailua-Kona Tip

.... and Mauna Kea. Both are shield volcanoes which means that they are not very explosive and that you won´t realize their sheer size since they cover such a large area each. Mind you - they are well over 8000 metres high, having built this island from the bottom of the sea. Kilauea, the active volcano, sits on the south side of the island. As a geographer, I can always only stand in awe.

Evidence of volcanic activity

by annk

Lava rock can be seen everywhere in the Kailua-Kona area. The town is situated at the bottom of Hualalai Volcano which is the 3rd youngest volcano on the island. It was active in the 1700's and produced 2 large lava flows that reached the ocean. The airport is built on the larger of the 2.

Don't forget your sunglasses

by kyoub

It is never very cold in Kona. Shorts and capris are year around wear. You may need a light jacket if you are out on the water though.
Take along some comfy walking shoes for walking up and down Alii drive.
Of course a swimsuit is a must. The sun is very bright so you would do well to have a sun screen for your camera. If you don't have one try not to take pictures at midday. Take plenty of sunscreen. It is expensive in the shops.

Holualoa Ukulele Gallery

by ahiller

Don't expect a huge museum, but the Holualoa Ukulele Gallery is a fun little one-room exhibit of ukuleles, located in the hills above Kona in a little "village" called Holualoa. The ukes are for sale but the owner (Sam) seems more interested in having the instruments appreciated than sold. Modern, traditional, you name it--even one classic made from a cigar box (with great sound). One warning, there is not (at the time of this posting) a website for the gallery, and there are a lot of misleading local rags that give false addresses. It's in Kona, and I recommend calling, since two of our three caravan parties got hopelessly lost looking for it. It's also not well marked, but you should be on the lookout for an old Post Office building.
