A Volcano Village B&B with great hosts
by danmcf about My Island Bed & Breakfast
There are several buildings on the eight acre 'botanical estate'. Our room had a seperate entrance and a lanai (that's a Hawaiian porch/balcony) leading to beautiful gardens. Breakfast was family style and all you can eat.
Loaner flashlights available for night time volcano watching. Your host, Gordon Morse, could be described as a 'unique quality' and an 'outstanding character' also.
Raised on Moloka'i, he's lived on the Big Island since '67, and is a source of great info & interesting stories. They have several free pamphlets on local sights, & several more self published tour books for sale. You'll read some interesting stories in these books, besides travel info on the Big Island.
Best accomodations minutes to Volcano Nat. Park
by Homanded about Kilauea Lodge in Volcano Village
Upon entering the quiet, serene surroundings of the Rain Forest adjacent Volcano National Park and seeing the quaint "village" that used to be an old YMCA you know you're going to be staying in an ideal paradise.
You many choose between rooms, cottages or even an entire house. NOTE: We traveled as a party of 3, split a room for 3 people and shared a charming main living area which includes fireplace, reading lounge and comfortable furnishings.
Adjacent to rooms is a jacuzzi area which you may reserve - set aside inside the rainforest. Very romantic and secluded. The owners were make up artists for the TV show, Magnum PI. The lodge was built as a YMCA Camp in 1930's and is now home to many endangered birds being it's situated amongst a cloud shrowded rainforest adjacent to the Volcano National Park.
They also have an incredible gourmet restaurant which was Winner of the Honolulu Magazine, Award 2004 Hale Aina,"Restaurant of Distinction";
Zagat 2000, "One of the most Popular Restaurants on the Big Island";
HVCB, Keep it Hawaii 2000, Certificate of Merit for Accommodations.
You can even pre-check their dinner menu daily at following web link:

The owners are friendly, German couple who went out of their way to accomodate us. We spent about 1 hour too long hiking the lava flows that night and, upon arrival back at our room, discovered the kitchen was already closed. The owner accomodated us and served us anyway IN the dining room. My friends and I were delighted and truly warmed by his attention to detail, even at short notice.
Complimentary breakfast of Pancakes with coconut syrup, honey butter and fresh tropical fruit was also a wonderful way to start off our day.
Volcano General Store

If you want to picnic while your at the volcano the closest grocery store is in volcano village, located 1 mile from the park entrance. (This is also the closest gas station to the park.) Make sure you have plenty of gas before you explore the park.
A gem in the Rain Forests of Hawaii

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Volcano Village Lodge. Only wish it could have been longer. Kay, the owner is very helpful but not obtrusive. The cabins have everything that you need for your stay and visit to the Volcano National Park, nearby. Each of the lodges are situated in a lush rain forest setting with open views and have all the amenities you could desire. They were immaculate and the breakfast and snacks were great. The hot tub was a welcome reprive at the end of a night hike out to the volcano flows.
A Little Bit of Heaven

During our visit to the Big Island of Hawaii, we had the fortunate experience of staying at the Volcano Village Lodge. Its' location outside of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park made it most convenient to come and go from the park as we pleased. The accomodations were perfect with every ammenity that we could have desired -from delicious food and beverages to flashlights for our lava sighting walk. Pepper our host was very gracious and saw to our every need. Our room was of three sided glass windows overlooking the rainforest. It was difficult to leave.

My wife and I stayed at the Volcano Village Lodge March 5th and 6th, 2007 based on Tripadvisor reviews. WOW ! What a beautiful place to stay. The owner Kay Lee was most helpful and gracious. She has invested a lot of time not to mention money in creating a wonderful and peaceful retreat in the rain forest of Hawaii.
We stayed in one of her newer cabins just completed this past December. It was constructed of sandal wood and teak and its beauty is hard for words to describe. The private deck off the cabin was a special place to sit and listen to the sounds of the rain forest. Kay delivers your breakfast items to the refrigerator the night before so your morning is undisturbed. She has a computer in the main lodge for your use as well as a telephone. The cabin had a new flat screen TV for viewing dvd's. The bathroom and kitchen had all you needed along with robes and slippers.
The lodge is a bout 10 minutes from Volcano National Park and about 28 miles from Hilo.
We followed Kay's recommendation and booked Warren for a personal tour of Volcano National Park. What a treat! Warren is very knowlegeable about Hawaiian culture and the National Park. He can show and tell you things you would never experience on your own.
Kay's lodge is a perfect get away from the hectic pace of life on the mainland. It is one of if not the best place we have ever stayed and we travel quite often.
Best place we have ever stayed!

A brief note to let you know that if you can stay at this place a few nights, you will not be sorry.
Great location, stunning rooms, wonderful service, you just could not ask for more.
Do yourself a favor though, stay at least two nights, but three or four would be better. It rains alot up there, and a day just sitting by the fire looking out at the rain forest and reading could be the highlight of your vacation.
We have stayed at B&B's over the globe. This was truly the best one. May seem a bit expensive, but you will agree it was worth it.

Our room (really a separate building) was just wonderful! Beautiful & comfortable furnishings. Surrounded by tropical flowers and plants; and hospitality from the owner that was as warm and friendly that we thought we were old friends. Our breakfasts, left in our refrigerator the night before, was gourmet quality and enough for lunch too. Can't wait to go back.
