More about Outrigger Palms at Wailea
Recommend the Palms!
I really enjoyed our stay at the Palms. The condo was clean, and more than we expected. Dining room, living room, one bed, two full baths, indoor laundry, full kitchen with all appliances. Tastefully decorated, staff was friendly and helpful. Free parking. Has pool and spa. Also able to use Outrigger Marriott facilities, as the Palms is also through Outrigger. Activity advisor "Activity World" onsite-very helfpul (and cheaper than using Pleasant Holidays). Although it was not the "grand wailea" and not on the beach (about a 15min walk) it was a great value and very comfortable. Same amenities as a hotel, except you have more space, feel more at home and can save money by buying groceries instead of eating out every day. Recommend. Would stay there again.
We stayed at the Palms in mid June for 2 nights after nearly a week in Kaanapali at the Hyatt to have more space and see a different part of the isalnd. When we got there it was probably over 90 in the condo. It has one small window size a/c unit in the master BR, and the rest is unair conditioned. Our unit was too hot from 9 am to 10 pm to really even be in it comfortably. The fans helped, but the 3" thick rock hard futon like mattresses, moldy showers, screens falling apart etc. didn't endear us to this place either. It does have LOTS of room, a great large lanai, nice pool, courteous staff, and access to the Marriott resort. I would not reccomend it, especially for more than 2 people or if you plan to be in the condo at all during the day.
It was just right!
I totally recommended it! We went in March 2004, it was the perfect time of the year because it wasn't crowded and the weather was cool. My family of 5 rented a unit facing the water. The view was beautiful and breath-taking. We felt the 2 bdrm was very spacious. We were also so close to resturants/retail stores and to all the other hotels on the beach, which all have easy access to the beach. The staff was helpful and pleasant. Enjoy!
Great alternative to the huge resorts!
My first ever trip to Hawaii was spent at the Palms of Wailea. I LOVED IT! The condos were immaculate and had beautiful marble floors as well as a great view from the lanai. The location is near many of the other more famous resorts. The condo gave us a lot of freedom with our meals which made it much more relaxing that trying to figure out where we're going to go for every meal. If you're not into the huge crowds of the large resorts, this is the way to go!
My family of 5 spent 5 days at The Palms at Wailea, and loved it. It is perfect for families with young kids. Our unit was huge, and it was great to have a kitchen and a washer & dryer! We faced the little creek that runs through the property, and the kids loved playing near it looking for frogs at night, and running around in the big grassy area. The sunsets were beautiful from our lanai. We liked getting take-out food (chinese) in Kihei and bringing it back to the condo and eating on the lanai. It was a big plus that we could use the pool and the Marriott because the kid pool/slide area kept the kids entertained for hours. We hope to go back next summer!
Anniversary Dream Trip!
We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary here in November, 2003 and absolutely loved this place! Our 21 year old son was with us and he also enjoyed it. We had booked a 1 bedroom condo and he was going to get the sleeper sofa in the generous living room. However, when we arrived they offered to upgrade us to a 2 bedroom condo, so we all had plenty of privacy! We loved having a kitchen and cooked our breakfast and a few dinners there. When we did go out, we enjoyed the local places that weren't so expensive, like Alexander's. We all loved the sunrise mountain bike tour, the snorkeling trips, the Luau, and the drive to Hana. Do leave EARLY when you start out for Hana and stop at the State Park and see the blowhole and other gorgeous views! We did like they suggested and "rented" a cooler and packed it with food and drinks and really enjoyed the drive. I would definitely stay here again and hope to do so very soon.
Disappointed at the Palms
When we first got there, we were supposed to have an ocean-view 2 bdr condo run by the resort (Outrigger). Our view was mainly of the parking lot, with just a sliver of the ocean viewable if you stood on top of the concrete wall on the corner of the lanai. The front desk allowed us to view two other 2 bdrms, and not only was the view worse but they were 2nd floor condos that were terribly hot. AC is only in the master bdrm, and you really need it for the entire condo. The floors were terribly dirty – the bottoms of our feet turned black after the first day, so we had to wear our shoes inside all of the time. The rugs didn’t look like they were ever steam-cleaned and the kitchen and bathroom floors were never swept or vacuumed by the maids. The blinds on the windows were old and barely worked and had huge gaps that couldn’t be closed. The beds were so hard that a relative in our party slept on the living room sofa every night instead of in the bedroom. The “second” bedroom wasn’t separated by a wall but rather a set of sliding shutter partitions that did not keep sound out, so someone sleeping there could hear the TV in the living room as if they were watching it all along. We had ants in the kitchen and the front desk kind of shrugged and said it was life in Hawaii, but if they cleaned all the crumbs off the floor then maybe it wouldn’t have attracted them in the first place. The maid service is rather spotty – sometimes they took our towels and gave us new ones, and then other times they didn’t.
By the way, you do NOT get privileges at the Marriott Wailea any longer. We found out when we arrived that Outrigger sold the Marriott, so that deal is off. We were not notified in advance of this fact.
The only positive things: the large whale-shaped pool is nice and never crowded and our daughter loved swimming there; the units are large so we never felt cramped; and the location is good, near the beaches, golf courses, big hotels and Kihei. But otherwise, they should renovate this place because people deserve more for their vacation dollar. We heard from friends that the condos at the Polo Beach Club were nice.
Okay, but some problems
Just returned from a 10 day stay at the Palms. We were given a privately owned, one-bedroom unit that was modestly furnished with no artwork what-so-ever on the walls. On the positive side: The grounds are simply beautiful and our unit was roomy. Even though we paid for a garden view, we could still see the ocean through the waving palm trees.
Unfortunately the condo was unbearably hot. Wound up hanging out on the lanai and the bedroom where the only wimpy air conditioner was. Our toddler was so miserable in the heat! We tried taking advantage of the afternoon winds by opening windows for a cross draft. Nothing helped! This is a major problem at The Palms which needs to be addressed.
Secondly, the Wailea Marriott no longer allows the use of their facilities to paying guests at The Palms. They are under a new ownership (we were told). This was a most unfortunate discovery once we arrived as we made arrangements at The Palms four months ago with this amenity in mind for our son.
Thirdly, our condo was not very clean. We found chips of glass in the carpet, black mold in the master shower, broken towel racks, and the kitchen floor was sticky. The blinds were bent beyond belief and the screen doors were either off the track or would not slide at all. When we complained about these issues, we were told no other units were available.
For $10.00/day, you can rent a gas BBQ if you're not up to using the oven in a hot unit. For $235 a night, you could probably find a better deal someplace else. Or maybe you'll wind up in a unit that is not in such ill-repair and as hot as the one we ended up in.
Palms - nice, but also some disappointments
We just returned from 12 nights at the Palms in Wailea. We had booked a 1 bedroom ocean view, but when we got to our room we had a 2 bedroom (kinda useless since we were just a married couple travelling alone and have no kids) with a very, very small view of the ocean if you stand on the roof.
We complained, and were shown a couple of units on the ground floor that were a bit nicer, but ultimately opted to stay on the second floor.
Unit seemed clean but then I discovered my bare feet were totally black on the bottom, so flip-flops are recommended! Also, the condo is basically too hot in the afternoon and evening, so we spent most of our tv watching time in the air-conditioned master bedroom. Luckily we were "out and about" most of the time so it wasn't a huge problem.
The staff were pretty accomodating and they allowed us to extend our stay until evening on the last day for half price of a day rate.
Overall we were satisfied. The pool is very nice and open until 10 pm, and the location of the condos is very convenient for getting to beaches, shops, Kihei etc.
Highly recommended Unit #905!
This is our second time at the Palms, and this November we stayed at The Palms, unit # 905 rented privately through Resortquest. What a beautiful condo! This is a 2 bedroom condo, on the ground floor, and it is absolutely lovely. It faces a green belt, nice quiet location (completely away from street noises) great patio furniture for sitting outside,as well as an outdoor electric grill. The interior has recently been redecorated and includes new appliances, and furnishings. THe entire condo is wonderful.( far above the one we stayed in last year through outrigger.) It is very fresh and clean, and seems brand new. It also includes nice beach chairs ,umbrella, mats and boogie board to use, an added bonus. There are celing fans, air conditioning in the main bedroom and an extra floor fan in living room, to help keep things cool and because the condo faces west, heat was never really a problem. This condo can be rented through resortquest, ( not outrigger)( make sure to request 905 as they may have others)
also can be rented through the owner and photos are available of this unit on the web at waileaparadise
We loved our stay here, and would happily stay in 905 again , highly recommended!
