Relaxing stay

by A TripAdvisor Member

We spent ten days at Waimea Plantation Cottages recently and loved it. If you want to relax and enjoy old Hawaii this is the place for you. If you want exiting nightlife and great swimming, don't bother. It's a bit remote but the island is small so you can drive to swimming, waterfalls, hikes, etc. Yes there are roosters, but that's just part of the charm, just set your body to rooster time and enjoy. The best sunsets are right on their beach. Use local grocery stores and the kitchen to save money, but we enjoyed all the restaurants on Kauai too. Slow down, relax and enjoy, you're on vacation.

Perfect Get-Away!

by A TripAdvisor Member

After spending 7 nights at a posh house w/ family in Maui, the husband and I decided to get-away from it all in Kauai for a couple of nights. We chose the Cottages because of their remoteness and absolutely loved it! Our cottage was clean, spacious, comfy bed, and had a view of the beach! The property does have a rather large population of chickens and roosters (as does all of Kauai it seems), but the morning serenade was limited and not intrusive. If you are looking for a wild party place, this is not the palce for you. If peace and relaxation are your goal combined with a touch of old Hawaii... well this is it.

Mahalo. We will return.

Beautiful location for relaxing

by A TripAdvisor Member

This was a great place for our group of eleven to spend some time together (mother, 5 children, and spouses).

We found the cottages (# 58 and # 78) to be rustic but adequate for our needs. Grounds were beautiful and most of us actually enjoyed hearing the waves all night and the roosters serenading us (very early morning). Hotel staff was friendly and actually made up our rooms more often than we expected. We cooked most of our evening meals on the grill on the porch.

If you are bothered by minor irritations such as burned out bulbs, outlets not working, ants on counter, or a gecko in the kitchen, this is not the place for you but we took it all in stride and had a wonderful vacation. As mentioned in other reviews, don't forget the bug spray. Sprinklers are on most of the time and we did get many bites.

If you are planning many activities, you may tend to do more driving than you would like because a lot of the main activities, shopping, etc. are more in the Poipu-Lihue area.

Great for Honeymoon

by A TripAdvisor Member

My new wife and I had a wonderfully relaxing time at the cottages. We could hear the ocean at night, if the sprinklers weren't on and the roosters weren't crowing. The cottages are very private. The location is secluded and quiet. I would definitely stay here again and I'm already recommending it to my family and friends. Aloha!

Check your reservation before arrival!

This is a beautiful spot and really homely and comfortable cottages, however, we were advised on arrival that existing guests had decided to extend their stay and therefore our cottage was no longer available! We were upset as had only 3 nights on the Island and had been looking forward to spending them at this wonderful restful location. We were assured that alternative accommodation was of a higher standard (at one of their other resorts located 30 minutes back in the direction we had just come from) and charged a much higher rate (which they would cover). We were offered a complimentary lunch and a 'gift bag' and given directions to 'Poipu Kai'. We were disheartened to find ourselves parking in modern suburban apartment block. Yes, the apartment was bigger, but it was also probably built in the 1970's, had no sea view and was positioned next to a building site. We immediately contacted the company and after several phone calls were told we could return to the Plantation on the following afternoon. We opened our gift pack to find a framed photograph of our cottage in Waimea! The next day we returned and had the most fantastic time but are still stunned that this company (we booked directly through Resort Quest Hawaii) were able to cancel a pre paid and booked reservation. We shall be requesting an explaination but would warn any one to check your booking before arrival.

Honeymooners beware!

My husband and I spent the first night of our honeymoon here, but we insisted on being moved the next night when local kids peeked in our window. The worst part was that we were later told that it has happened before. :(

Stepping Back in Time

by A TripAdvisor Member

The cottages are great. The draw of Waimea is its history. I could walk from the "plantation" to the place where Captain Cook first landed, to the visitor's center, to the old Governor's Palace, and to the old mission church. It is like stepping back in time.

a Brit's view

We stayed here for 4 nights in March in cottage 87. It is a very relaxing place. It is superbly placed for visiting the Canyon and Kokee state park. The drive to the South shore beaches and golf courses is also easy from here. We had an ocean and grove outlook which was beautiful and peaceful. That said, the roosters did make a lot of noise and woke us during the night. The cottage was rustic, spacious and basically furnished but more than adequate. As others have said, there are numerous mozzies.

Food and service at the on-site restaurant were no better than ok. The beer from the micro-brewery was good (but the house wine terrible). For 2 of the nights we were there the bar hosted live music and the bar and restaurant were so crowded that we couln't get a table. (There are ok restaurants within walking distance in Waimea).

Truly Hawaii

by A TripAdvisor Member

What a pleasant surprise we had when we checked into the Cottages. Our cottage was spacious, well appointed and clean. It was so nice to have something other than a major hotel atmosphere. It was a treat to be cooled by ocean breezes and ceiling fans. The cottage had a huge veranda with ample seating and was well spaced from other cottages so it was most pleasant to sit outside. The only drawback is that the ocean water is muddy due to the nearby river, but there are nice beaches down the road a few miles.
