Many people choose to stay at a large resort when visiting the islands but there are ways to stay on the islands even if you’re on a budget. If you can’t afford the hefty price tag attached to the hotels here, consider a vacation rental. You’ll also be saving money by having access to a kitchen so you can dine in, rather than at pricey restaurants for all meals. There are many websites out there that make finding these houses and condos easy. I’d recommend starting your search with Vacation Rentals By Owner or www.Craigslist.org. Vacation rentals are also subject to taxes and most usually charge a one time, nominal cleaning fee but almost always this ends up being a much cheaper alternative to staying at a hotel. The vacation rental we had on Kauai even came with free laundry, and access to a pool and tennis courts.

Private homes or condos, most with fully kitchens and laundry. Each property is unique.

This was a business trip so I didn't have to pay. Given that, this was one nice place. The Anara Spa was incredible- I highly recommend the papaya body polish and massage- and the staff was great. Lots to do for families including a salt water lagoon for swimming. I am not a golfer but I heard that the Poipu Bay Golf Course was awesome. I would recommend it in a heartbeat for anyone who can afford to stay here. Or if you are like me and someone else was paying. :-)

    Loved it!

We stayed in a room facing the parking lot, and it was still great!

The room was a huge 2 room suite with plenty of space for 2 couples. There was also a pull out couch, so you could easily sleep more people if you wanted.

Everyone we spoke with there had a membership to that particular vacation club - from what we gathered it is hard to get a room there - you have to book early!

They have great pools, and a ton of on site services - including renting snorkel gear, etc. There are a ton of common areas/places to grill, play cards, relax. And since it's a time share, you can bring food anywhere with you on the property and they don't give you a hard time, since you're an owner - but - if you want to order food poolside you can do that as well.

The only annoying part of the trip were the people wandering around trying to get you to buy another week :)

Great pool, beautiful beach, wonderful views. Great ambiance overall!

When I arrived on the island of Kauai, I was tired from my stay at the shared hostel in Honolulu, so this place I found in the local phone book, the price was right, and I wasn't interested in watching any television, and since none is available, it was perfect.
Clean sheets and blankets on the bed/s, clean towels and fresh soap in the washroom, plenty of hot water in the shower made this a great spot to rest.
The location is on Rice Road, a busy thoroughfare, but very good if you need to find your way.

Credit cards are not accepted, but they will accept travellers cheques.

Frommer's Review describes Motel Lani as: a three star, no-frills bed and shower, you won't find a little basket of toiletries in the bathroom or a mint on your pillow, but you will get a clean, basic room (no TV) for as little as $34. This small, concrete-block motel mainly serves interisland travelers and a few visitors on a budget.
The location, on a busy street right in the heart of Lihue, isn't bad--the airport is just a 5-minute drive away, making this a good rest stop if you have an early-morning flight
For $50 you can get a room with a kitchenette.
A/C, small fridge, kitchenette in some rooms

The grounds of the hotel were beautiful. The breakfast buffet was typical buffet food but the view was amazing. And complimentary Mai Tais and hula show every evening. Internet service in the lobby.

The pool was small but nice. We never had a problem finding lounge chairs.

We had booked a partial ocean view and when we checked in we tried to upgrade to an ocean front room (before we even saw our room) but they were booked. It turns out that our partial ocean view was great and we could also see the mountains including amazing sunsets. The 2 photos show our view from the balcony!

The only downside, our rooms had obviously not been remodeled in some time and the bathrooms were teeny. The walls were thin and we had some loud neighbors the first two days, we could hear them talking and laughing late into the night. Fortunately they left the second day. I think it was a good thing that we were on the top floor.

We won a weeklong stay at this condo at a charity event in Chicago. It was a great place to stay and I would definitely return. It was a secluded resort of condos -- a quiet place, plenty of people but not touristy like the big hotels. Situated right on the ocean, it made for incredible views. The stretch of beach in front of the property wasn't quite swimmable in the winter, though. That's what the pool is for, though! Location wise, we felt it was perfect -- smack dab in the middle of the north and south shores, so we got equal time exploring all parts of the island. Plus its right near the Wailua River, Smith's tropical paradise luau, and lydgate park, which is a family-oriented beach. Having a kitchen was a great addition -- we did a big shopping trip at Costco and were able to cook quite a few meals, which made nice with our bank accounts. The bbq is in the pool area, and at nighttime it was fun to go down there and cook, eat and chill out with the tiki torches and waves crashing in the backround. I think these condos run about $200 a night, and from what I know that is relatively cheaper than the big hotels on Kauai.

Awesome place to stay. Poi'pu is just across the street. Place was very clean, neat, and wonderful. We opened windows at night and nice cool breeze constantly coming in. The grounds were impeccable. There were 3 pools for us to use. Awesome place, I would definitely stay here again!!

Ok...you want a truly luxurious experience? This is the place. The Grand Hyatt Kaua'i ranks in the top 3 in luxurious accommodations for all of the South Pacific every year by Conde Nast Traveler magazine. There's a reason for that. This place is the most beautiful resort I've ever experienced...and I've seen a lot of nice places. The Grand Hyatt is sprawled out over many acres boasting magnificent landscaping and scenic backdrops. Situated along the South shores of Kaua'i on Poip'u Beach, the Grand Hyatt has the staff and amenities fit for royalty. Everyone smiles, offers to help you, & provides 2nd-to-none service. As with all things luxurious, the Grand Hyatt comes with a hefty price. But, if you have a little hard-earned $$$ to burn, treat yourself....you won't be disappointed. The Grand Hyatt Kaua'i Luau is also a "must-see" event. All the luaus on Kaua'i are relatively the same price. So, that being said, go to the Grand Hyatt's luau if you do one. The Hyatt gets the BEST for everything.

Some other great things about the Hyatt include a huge freeform pool meandering throughout the property. There's also a saltwater lagoon for swimming or kayaking. If you want to pamper yourself (and I highly recommend this), go to the Grand Hyatt's Anara Spa & enjoy ANY spa treatment. Here's a hint: Schedule it in the morning. If you pay for ANY service at the Anara Spa, you will have access to all of its facilities for the rest of the day. This in itself is well worth it. There are dressing rooms for the men and the ladies. Also, there are outdoor showers, a sauna, a WONDERFUL eucalyptus steam room, & a plunge pool to enjoy. They also have a lap pool and a small cafe with heart-healthy fruit/vegetable concoctions & meals.

This property is a fantastic value for what you get. It is also in a perfect location to make your base while exploring Kaua'i. The rooms are decent-sized, clean, & efficient. I highly recommend spending the small difference for an oceanfront room. The views are spectacular, especially in the morning during sunrise. The rooms feature 2 double beds or one queen. You get a small sink, coffee maker, small fridge, microwave, & 27'' TV w/satellite. The oceanfront rooms all have a nice sized lanai with a table and two chairs. The staff here is very nice. The grounds are basic and the pool is very small. But, think about it...you're in Hawaii!! Go in the ocean and enjoy the BIG pool!! Also, the hotel is located right next to the Coconut Marketplace. Here, you'll find many shops & restaurants at your disposal. The beach is very pretty here...but not swimmable.
