More about Outrigger Waipouli Beach Resort & Spa
Although small stores near your hotel will provide you with some basics you have to know (you will notice soon anyway) that food is very expensive in Kaua’i. So, you can save some dollars if you buy from bigger supermarkets. We went to FOODLAND many times because it wasn‘t far from our hotel. It is located before Kapaa at Waipouli (4-771 Kuhio Highway) and have a huge selection of fresh fruits and vegetables for salads but also you can buy already cooked meals (chicken, meat, eggs and jamon for breakfast etc). Of course, there are many more, like the famous in Honolulu ABC market etc
There are also many farmer’s market on several different spots. These markets have fresh vegetables and fruits and they are lovely to see/smell anyway. On october 2009 the spots were:
LIHU’E:Monday 15.00 at Kukui Grove Shopping Mall and Friday 15.00 at Vidinha Stadium Parking Lot
KOLOA:Monday 12.00 at Koloa Ball Park
HANALEI:Tuesday 14.00-16.00 at Hawaiian Farmers Mkt, Waipa
KALAHEO:Tuesday 15.30 at Kalaheo Neighborhood Center
KAPA’A:Wednesday 15.00 at Kapa’a New Town Park
HANAPELE:Thursday 15.30-17.30 at Hanapele Town Park(behind fire station)
KILAUEA:Thursday 16.30 at Kilauea Neighborhood Center and Saturday 11.30 at Kilauea Plantation Center
KEKAHA:Saturday 9.00 at Kehaha Neighborhood Center
The Outrigger Waipouli is a very new hotel build in December 2006. It is a really beautiful place with an awesome pool and several jacuzzis inside the pool area. The rooms are fabulous with a great kitchen area and huge bath rooms.
The stuff is very friendly and everytime exerted to satisfy you. Some areas are still under construction, e.g. the gym and some restaurants. They told us that everything should be ready up to the middle of this year.
We absolutely recommend the Outrigger Waipouli and enjoyed our stay there very much!
Dont waste your $$$$. This place needs help!!!
what a disaster! booked thru outrigger and paid double the direct-to-owner price at vrbo.com.....then saw a really nice resort with a nice pool, RUINED by WAAAAY TOO MANY LOCALS!!! the wristband policy is a joke. the psycho/nazi lifeguard lets ALL his local friends in!? WHATS THE POINT?? Its SOOO blatant that the locals even tell you, "I know the lifeguard!"......so be prepared for your kids to be fighting for pool & slide space&time with lots of kids!!! the pool is an accident waiting to happen! The lifeguard was YELLING at guests!? like he was "on something" wink, wink.. we didnt feel safe and watched our kids constantly as a result..... Then if you try to "take the edge off" at the pool bar, you'll encounter Hawaii's Worst Pool Bar!! The bartenders sit at the bar until someone walks in, then go behind the bar to mix a drink at THE WORST STOCKED BAR IN HAWAII!! Cannot beleive Outrigger allows this!? Its obviously run by AMATEURS!! THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING AT THE POOL & POOL BAR!! on the bright side, the rooms are great! nice touches and furniture, but in KAPAA, the most run-down town on the island. kappaa is convenient, lots of shopping& food options, but obviously lots of locals, THAT USE THE POOL CAUSE "WE KNOW THE LIFEGUARD!!".......buyer beware....at least book direct with owners and save $$.....cause outrigger doesnt give you anything extra, especially at the pool & bar!!!! ps...the fitness room is also a joke!!! about a 7x 12 ft "afterthought"....like the developer said "u-oh, we forgot a fitness room!" then added one out of a supply closet! NO REALLY! not kidding at all...ITS TINY!!...
Once of the nicest places we've ever stayed & loved it
2 couples - age range 41-51.
2 bedroom, oceanfront booked through Royal Hawaii Condos at a rate of $335 per night including taxes. At this rate, this condo is a steal.
Condo: Gorgeous interior. Very spacious, tastefully-decorated with a very good layout. It is very clean with housekeeping daily, a very nice option for a condo. The beds are very comfortable & lots of closet space, especially the master bedroom. The master bathroom has a big Jacuzzi & separate shower with good counterspace & storage. The second bathroom is smaller with a pedestal sink. There is no storage or counter in the bathroom which is a bit of a nuisance & would be much better with counter & cabinet. Each bedroom has a LCD TV.
The kitchen is unbelievable. SubZero fridge, Wolf oven & stove top & a Fisher-Paykel dishwasher. Gorgeous wood cupboards, granite counter & fully stocked kitchen.
Livingroom is very comfortable with 2 sets of sliding doors to take advantage of the oceanfront view. LCD TV. Sits 4 adults comfortably.
Lanai – master bedroom has its own small lanai with very comfortable lounger & chair. It is at the back of the unit so view of the ocean from here is just so-so but no big deal for us.
The main lanai is huge with a table for 6 plus 2 extremely comfortable lounging chairs. View of ocean is spectacular. We spent a lot of time on our main lanai – every breakfast & 3 of 5 dinners here too (pretty unusual for us but the view was too amazing & it was so relaxing at the end of the day). One of our dinners we watched a pod of whales playing including a couple of young ones. It was an experience of a lifetime for us.
Location: On the Coconut Coast right off Kuhio Hwy. Across the road from a small mall with a Foodland, ABC store, Starbucks, a few restaurant options, Cold Stone & an internet café that was closed for renovations. Beside this mall is another shopping area that has a Safeway & some other stores that I can’t remember. It is very busy but we loved the fact that we could walk across the road & get our groceries. The Coconut Marketplace is just a couple of minutes away by car but we did not have time to go there.
It is a central location if you are going to tour the island. The beach is walkable & pretty but while we there it was too rough for swimming as we expected when we made the reservation. There were some kite surfers & that was fun to watch from the lanai.
The pool is very large & wasn’t too busy when we were there. There is only one pool so it can be a little noisy with kids playing. It is so large though you can just move to a different spot if it bothers you as there is a section of it geared toward children with a slide. The winds did kick up in the afternoon but of the 3 days we spent time at the pool it was not a problem. It was actually refreshing. We did not have to get wristbands maybe because it was very quiet so it was not an issue for us.
I can see that the units facing the highway might be a bit of a disappointment as you are overlooking the highway & the shopping plaza across the street but I guess that is really an individual preference/priority issue.
We would book again at this condo & definitely do the oceanfront. If you book through a third party, make sure that the condo is managed by the Outrigger before you book. I think I’d also e-mail the Outrigger for written confirmation that they are responsible for guest problems of the unit you are renting. If your unit is not managed by the Outrigger, I’d want to have a local contact incase there is a bump along the way. We had an issue while there & were told that the Outrigger did not manage that condo. I pursued it once we returned & it has been quickly resolved to our satisfaction. It ends up that the condo is managed by the Outrigger & the problem should have been addressed by them.
My husband and I had an incredible stay at this resort. The only negative thing I can say is that we only stayed here 2 nights. We would have loved to stay the week! We will hopefully be able to go back someday with our children.
We were here on a Monday and Tuesday night in the end of April and it was dead! AT 8:00 the first night there was one couple in a jacuzzi at the end of the pool and we had the rest of the pool to ourselves. The next afternoon there were only about 5 other people at the pool. In fact the whole time we were there we saw way more staff then there were guests.
We booked a 1 bedroom oceanview condo. We were in awe of the place as soon as we stepped in. For some reason we had 2 bedrooms. At first we were disappointed by our view because it overlooked the pool and then the ocean, but the pool and grounds were so beautiful that we didn't mind. The condo itself was wonderful. As others have said, there are great appliances, ipod doc, flast screen tvs, etc. Both bedrooms were master bedrooms each with their own jacuzzi tub, separate shower and lots of storage space in both bathrooms. The only difference between the two bedrooms was that one had access lanai and the other had a bigger tub. I would be perfectly content in either one. There was also another half bathroom.
I liked the location because it was in the center of the 2 day trips we took. One to the canyon and the other the Napli Coast. It was nice to have the stores across the street too. We got some good souvenirs at Coconut Marketplace just down the road. It didn't bother me that the beach wasn't swimmable because we had some good beaches on the other two islands we stayed on and the pool was MUCH better here than the other places we stayed. We did swim at Kee beach for awhile on the Napali Coast and I heard there are others not too far from the resort.
I definitely recommend this resort and hope to be back again!
My husband and I stayed in a one bedroom, partial ocean view condo from May 8th to the 13th. We booked through Royal Hawaiian, and recieved 1 night free.
We can't say enough about this resort. It was terrific. We stayed in Unit E306. It was very comfortable, clean, and nicely appointed. Our view from the condo was beautiful. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. The grounds were also beautiful. What a terrific pool! The pool and whirlpool (they have 3) never felt crowded. Although you really can't swim out in the beach it still is beautiful.
We did not eat at the poolside grill, however, we did have a couple drinks there and had no complaints.
Loved the location on the east of the island. It made it easy to travel and explore. We also really liked Kapaa. It was convinent for lunch, shopping, etc.
Would return in a heart beat.
Great for honeymoon (or any other trip)
I booked this hotel through bookit.com and got a great rate - $173 per night for May 6-11. This was for our honeymoon and we were in Room D305. For whatever reason, they booked us in a two bedroom even though I had paid for a one bedroom.
The room was great - huge, with technically three bedrooms - one with a tub that could fit two, another with a shower and a tub, and one with just the shower. The bedrooms had a king and a double bed. We only used the king bed, but it was pretty comfortable - a bit soft, but we really like hard beds. There were two lanais with nice furniture. There were THREE flat screen televisions, and an amazing kitchen. Unfortunately, we didn't use anything but the fridge and dishwasher, but the oven would be a dream for any cooker.
The property was beautiful. The pool is so incredibly nice. Saltwater is so much better for your skin/eyes than chlorine, and the water was clean. It's a nice long pool and the slides are super fun (even for adults!). There were plenty of lounge chairs, but not any shade, until around 4pm. They also had three hot tubs with sand bottoms which were a nice touch. We never went to the beach, but the waves looked pretty rough anyway, plus just a few minutes away are nice calms ones, in Poipu and at Lydgate.
An Aveda spa and salon are on-site, and I was dismayed to see that a one hour massage was $145, but then the front desk gave us $99 one hour massage check in specials. The massage was done outside near the pool in a cabana. I highly recommend it.
There is still a very small amount of construction going on, but it was not noticeable at all.
Overall, this was a great place to stay at for any kind of vacation, whether you are on your honeymoon or with your kids ora girls only getaway.
We thought the location was great - good distances to get to any of the other coasts.
Great place, Great Vacation
My husband and I and our 3 kids, ages 10 & 4 (twins), booked our trip through the resort (2 bedroom, 3 bath oceanview condo). All previous reports on rooms are correct. Condos are simply amazing. You'll never stay anyplace nicer.
Upon arrival, condo staff were very polite and helpful. Check in was simple and quick. Concierge was very informative and was there to help with any questions or bookings. When we got to our room with the bellhop we noticed the A/C not working, he immediately called and had someone down to fix it within 5 minutes (you have to shut the slider doors correctly for the A/C to work). We stayed in the D building on the bottom floor and the views and grounds out the sliders were amazing. (If your expecting beautiful sunsets you won't see them on this side of the island but you do get amazing sunrises)
The Pool - One of the main reasons we booked here. Was absolutely amazing. Kids loved it. Most of the time we had the pool to ourselves. But if there were people there it was big enough to fit everyone. No lines for the slides, no one really on the lazy river. Always had a hot tub to ourselves (they have 3 big size ones with sand bottoms). The towels at the pool were much better than what we had read about. You give the lifeguard at the pool your room number and he/she gives you the amount of towels you need. No need to turn them in at the end of the day (they leave at 7pm) you can return them the next day and get new ones. Staff at the pool very friendly, really enjoyed them. Food was good at the snack shack. They have cold stone ice cream! We enjoyed eating there.
The Beach - Everyones right about the beach not being swimmable. But kids were still able to play in water as the waves weren't to big. We found the best beaches available were the following...Marriott ( by the airport), Princeville Resort, Hanaeli (up by North Shore). Beaches to mention: Poipu, everyone raves about this beach but we weren't to impressed with it. We did get to see a couple monk seals but very small beach with alot of people. Also, Lydgate Park Beach, people said that was a great beach but the parking lot was pretty pack with cars so we didn't attempt it.
I would highly recommend renting a car. Any sites you want to see are accessable by car. Not to many buses or taxis around. The shopping center across the street was nice to have there. We were there almost every night getting Cold Store or Jamba Juice. They have quite a few restaurants to choose from. We ate at Woohoo's the first night there and loved it. Ate at Bubba's and their hamburgers and shakes were great. We were sad to discover that place the last day we were there. Coconuts was very good as well. Other than that we did breakfast and some lunches at the condo. McDonalds was great to have across the street for the kids.
Only downfall of whole trip. The last day there, we were packing up and noticed that my purse had been stolen out of the master bathroom closet. Luckily my wallet wasn't in it. When we informed security they were right over and had me fill out a report. Safes aren't big enough to fit a purse. Security said that housekeeping isn't allowed in closets and it all kinda ended there. Still no resolution and haven't heard from them since. Keep all cash, credit cards, birth certificates, and any valuables in room safe.
LOVED IT. Would go back anytime.
The Condo: We stayed in a 2 bedroom ocean front condo on the ground floor in building G. The quality of the condo could not be better with dark mahogany woodwork, granite countertops, Sub Zero refrigerator and a Wolf range. As in most condos, there is a washer and dryer, which is a real plus. There was plenty of space in the condo although the 2nd bedroom was a little tight, but not terrible. The views of the ocean were very nice as the space between the condo and the water is a real nice green space. The lanai had plenty of room and the furniture was very comfortable. However, we had an end unit and they have more lanai space and furniture than the normal 2 bedroom condos. We've stayed in a lot of nice places and this condo ranks among the very top. We are already talking about coming back to stay here again.
Common Areas: The pool is wonderful as it is a lazy river configuration with plenty of room and two water slides. Excellent for kids and adults alike. The pool area also has two nice hot tubs. Unfortunately the pool was closed one afternoon for a chemical imbalance. The grounds are very nice and lush with vegitation. There are nice walk paths around the pool and on all three sides of the property which includes the beachfront. The lobby is a large open air space and they have a conceirge on duty there also. The bar and grill between the pool and the ocean is very nice. It was open on the day we arrived (Sunday), but was closed most of the time during the week because of construction. The property opened in early 2007 and still has a few things to finish up on. We noticed an open space next to our condo and asked what was planned for that area. The people at the front desk told us that they are going to put in a restaurant and the work on that should begin this summer. That will definitely change the ambiance of the condo that we stayed in. However, it will not compete with the ocean views. There is a beach with nice sand fronting the property, but signs are posted that it could be dangerous for swimming. There are a few small areas near the jetties that are protected for swimming. The resort also provides beach lounge chairs.
Resort Staff: They were always friendly and helpful to us. However, they were not very well informed about the construction schedule on the bar and grill nor did they have good knowledge of how long the pool would be closed. It would have been nice to learn of the construction schedule when we checked in.
Location and Surroundig Area: The location is ideal for seeing the entire island. It is about halfway between the north and south ends of the island. Across the street is a fairly new strip center with a grocery store, drug store, Starbucks, restaurants, etc. We saw this as a plus since you can easily walk to it, but we did not have to look at it from our oceanfront condo either. The mountain view condos would be looking at this strip center and you would hear the road traffic on the highway (windows open), but they also do have a nice view of the mountains. Kapaa town is nearby and could be walked if you are a decent walker. It is nothing fancy, but we like it because it has a lot of local character. There are several restaurants there including Bubba's hamburgers.
Coulddn't find anything bad to say about this place!
These condos are 1st class all the way! My wife and I stayed in a 2 br/3ba unit with another couple. Great layout for 2 couples. Plenty of room and ammenities. The staff was excellent as well! Whatever we asked for we received. No kidding and FAST too! Great pool and hot tubs. Cleaning crew came in daily. Great beach for sunbathing. Didn't have any expectations about it being good for swimming. Location was center of the east coast. Central for seeing and doing stuff all over the island.
I would recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in a condo on Kauai!

Courtyard by Marriott in Waipouli
The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook says the beach at the Courtyard by Marriott "isn't very swimmable"...can anyone elaborate on that statement? It was formerly the Kauai Coconut Beach Resort.
RE: Courtyard by Marriott in Waipouli
The wind whips up in the area and the water gets a little choppy. Not too much sand, if any, in the Coconut Beach complex. Nearby at Lydgate Beach Park, near the mouth of the Wailea River, is a good sand beach with snorkeling and swimming.

I saw the pictures in the paper. Is that the Courtyard by Marriott?

Hi all- can anyone recommend a great place to stay in Kauai that is a condo- style accommodation but part of a hotel/resort? In short, we want the best of both worlds- we would like a kitchen to prepare breakfasts and coffee, but also would like full restaurant, bar, and service amenities when by the pool or not in the mood to cook! THANKS!
Re: Condo- hotel
There is only a couple of first class places to stay that will blend both the hotel and and the condo together. One is the Waipouli Resort in the middle of the island. It is less than two years old, it has a wonderful two acre pool, is ocean front. The units are very nice, with air conditioning (rare in Kauai), luxury kitchens and wonderful views. There are several rental companies that handle these units. You can contact Outrigger, Kauai Travel Authority, or ReMax. They all handle rentals.
The second option is the Regency Villas in Poipu. They have only been open for three weeks, they are world class units, with a wonderful pool and beautiful lani's and views. They are however, about a hundred yard walk to either the Hyatt Regency or to other restuarants, so you won't have the poolside service, but you'll love the condos. So far, the only rental company for these units is Kauai Travel Authority.
Good luck, you'll love the island
