  • An affordably-priced laid-back property situated among more expensive resorts along the islandýs eastern shore. Very condo-like but with a few extra amenities (such as a concierge & laundromat) that go with being a resort hotel.

    The Islander describes itself as a ýplantation-styleý resort and it indeed was. There is beautiful landscaping and we were right on a very uncrowded stretch of the beach. We didnýt even use the pool but it was nice and has a poolside bar that was open till midnight.

    The location was excellent due to having the Coconut Marketplace right next door for all of the shopping, dining & entertainment needs you might have (including a cinema, but who wants to spend any beach time at the movies?). The resort is located right on Highway 56 with easy access to any other part of the island.

    We had a few roaches and a gecko in our room, but with everything being so open you should expect that. Otherwise the accommodations were very good and our fridge kept the drinks nice and cold!

    If you have kids and plan on spending a lot of time snorkeling & swimming at the beach you may want to consider staying at Princeville or Poipu since the eastern side of the island has ýstrong current warningsý posted on all the beaches. Donýt stay in Lihue unless you can afford the Marriott or have to be close to Kmart or Wal-Mart to stay connected to the mainland.

    We really enjoyed the Islander and would definitely stay there again!

    The Islander is an unpretentious, comfortable resort hotel with a little funky edge but certainly quite adequate and with reasonable rates. My room had shower only, no bathtub (was not a big deal for me). There is a small swimming pool with an outdoor bar in the central courtyard; the hotel is on the water, but the beach is unsuitable for swimming (gets deep too quickly with strong currents). Still it is a very nice stroll, especially in the morning.

    The hotel is conveniently located on Kuhio Highway next to Coconut Marketplace, an outdoor shopping mall featuring a number of good stores and eating places.

    Update (1/21/05): The other day I got a flyer in the mail from the hotel ownership, saying that they are upgrading and converting the place into condominiums for sale. It's likely my description of the place will become obsolete soon.
