Good Kauai location
by dpkmd about Wailua Bay View Condo
In early July, 2007, we stayed in Kauai in a condo rental which was about 10 minutes from the airport in Lihue, Kauai (LIH). It was a perfect location which was about in the middle of the sights on the northern and southern parts of the island. It took no more than an hour to get to anywhere on the island.
We originally chose this condo because it was a one-bedroom with air conditioning. Despite the fact that everyone will tell you that A/C isn't necessary and that there is sometimes a breeze which "cools down" the unit, it would have been unbearable for these three Floridians who use the A/C even in our 70-degree weather. From the first night there, our teenager camped out in our bedroom (the only room with A/C) since his room, the living room, was very warm and at night, attracted big, black bugs. Our view was excellent of the Wailua Bay where my son attempted to surf. The water was warm, but murky and the beach was no more than a five-minute walk from our unit.
Our unit was completely furnished with everything we needed, except more A/C space.

Best time to visit Kauai?
by PinkPanther_04
I've decided I want to go to Kauai, but I'm not sure when the best month is for what I'm interested in. I want to do a lot of snorkeling and sea kayaking, as well as some boogie boarding and hiking. I'm planning to stay in the Poipu area since we'll be going this fall, but I'm wondering how late we can go for the best beach conditions and the least rain. My biggest concern is whether the water is too rough for good snorkeling by November.
If you had a choice between September, October, and November, when would you go? Or does it even matter?

Those three months are all good months in the Poipu area, the warm side of Kaua'i. From the middle of September through October would be ideal as far as having the Island to yourselves. No summer tourists from the Mainland, and no holiday visitors yet for the winter holidays. It always rains, but it does not interfere with your activities, especially on the Poipu side. A downpour or two can be expected, after all this is the tropics. You need rain to make everything lush and green. Aloha oe

It doesn't really matter which of those months you go. The weather will be the same other than a few degrees of variation in temp.
However, you may want to rethink your choice of Po`ipu for your stay if kayaking, snorkeling and hiking are on your mind. The north shore has the best place for snorkeling at Tunnels Beach within the reef. As well, the Kalalau Trail is located here along the Na Pali Coast. And, nothing beats kayaking in the ocean along the Na Pali Coast. The views from the trail or from the kayak will be breath-taking. If you stay in Po`ipu, you are looking at 1 hour and 15-30 minutes of driving one way to reach them. And that is if you avoid rushhour (AM and PM) in and around Lihu`e.
On the flip side, staying in Po`ipu puts you closer to Koke`e State Park where you can find the most glorious hiking especially along the Awa`awapuhi Trail.
Just remember: The highway does NOT circumvent the island so Lihu`e is the more central point of it.
Be sure to pick up a copy of The Ultimate Kaua`i Guidebook at your local bookstore and read it thoroughly. Their maps and directions with descriptions of off-the-beaten-path places will make you want to stay longer.
Have a great trip and take plenty of pictures to share with us.

Thanks for your responses. We've decided to go in mid-October and stay on the Coconut Coast at a condo in the Wailua Bay View complex. It's right on the beach and has a stunning view.
