Home away from home
by ballerina11 about Kaha Lani
We won a weeklong stay at this condo at a charity event in Chicago. It was a great place to stay and I would definitely return. It was a secluded resort of condos -- a quiet place, plenty of people but not touristy like the big hotels. Situated right on the ocean, it made for incredible views. The stretch of beach in front of the property wasn't quite swimmable in the winter, though. That's what the pool is for, though! Location wise, we felt it was perfect -- smack dab in the middle of the north and south shores, so we got equal time exploring all parts of the island. Plus its right near the Wailua River, Smith's tropical paradise luau, and lydgate park, which is a family-oriented beach. Having a kitchen was a great addition -- we did a big shopping trip at Costco and were able to cook quite a few meals, which made nice with our bank accounts. The bbq is in the pool area, and at nighttime it was fun to go down there and cook, eat and chill out with the tiki torches and waves crashing in the backround. I think these condos run about $200 a night, and from what I know that is relatively cheaper than the big hotels on Kauai.

Has anyone stayed at the Aston Kaha Lani in/near Lihue? I've read from a few places that it's a pretty nice place, somewhat secluded., but any other input would be helpful. Thanks.
Thanks, AT

Can anyone recommend a comfortable and low cost place to stay on Kauai? We will not be spending much time at the hotel but we would like it to be clean and reliable. Thanks!

Don't know exactly what you're looking for as far as low cost but I'd recommend you go to vrbo.com which is a site for condo rentals for all the islands. We were there in November, 2003. We found one through this site in Kapaa on the eastern side of the island which we liked and found very convenient. It was the Kaha Lani (Phuki Lani #109). It has its own website. Anyway, you'll find many offerings at the afore mentioned site at a myriad of prices. Hope this helps. Oh, by the way, you'll love the many various waterfalls on Kauai. Finally, if you haven't already get "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" through wizardpub.com. It's great. We actually got it through overstock.com at a much reduced price.

Don't know if you're into auctions or not, if so go to skyauction.com. There are quite a number of Kauai places usually listed. If you're not familiar with the process, a few words of caution - Be sure to read all the particulars, i.e. per night additional charges for taxes and services. I've seen where many people have gotten great bargains but like I said do your research and know exactly what your total costs will be.

The better deal will be renting a condo for about $900 try www vrbo.com,usairways.com has good air flights. It's cheaper going off season I GO IN May or Sept. Also try kauaivistorsbureau.org cars I usually go to bookingbuddy.com or smartertravel.com for air or all travel needs to get a ideal of the cost.

Most car rentals are fairly cheap in Kauai, as there are so many providers. Air would obviously depend on where you were coming from, we found the best deals through ATA/Southwest, though I would not recommend ATA as an airline. If you are looking for a good place with a kitchenette, I would definitely recommend staying in a condo. That's what we did and it was SO nice having a kitchen. We stayed at Kaha Lani in Lihue (Castle Resorts) -- it was a nice location right on the beach, a great pool (good for kids) and close to everything. We could easily get to the north or south shore when we needed to.
