More about Poipu Plantation Bed and Breakfast
Is it a B & B or Condos? Both!
What a marvelous place to relax and enjoy the beautiful island of Kauai. The hotel is just one of the few places that offer air conditioning for their condo rooms. The Poipu Plantation is located on the south and sunny shores of Poipu beach.
We got to the hotel after hours so our room key and directions were waiting for us on a message board. Our condo was the "Macadamia" room, this was by far the best room offered, not because it was fancy but because it was at the back of the complex, a seculed upstairs unit with a great lanai to sit and relax, have a drink or a cup of coffee and watch the ocean, mountains and the world go by..
The room was a one bedroom with a King size bed. It hads a full kitchen and dining area. The bathroom was a bit stark and the only amenities offered was a bar of soap. So make sure you bring hand lotion and shampoo supplies. There were 3 sliding patio doors which we opened at night and early in the day, this coupled with the tradewinds made for pleasant temperatures at night and early morning. The air conditioning came in handy for cooling off the room rapidly when it was needed. The Plantation Poipu offered use of a gas grill and a hot tub on a deck tucked away amid the tropical trees and flowers. They had coin laundry on site which was both convenient and economical.
The cost of the condo was an amazing rate of $135 per night which is an outstanding rate and they offer a reduced rate for those visitors who return for another stay.
The Poipu Plantation has 2 bedroom 2 bath condos which are great for family stays. There is also a 1938 plantation home on the property with four excellent Kauai "Bed and Breakfast" rooms. Breakfast is not available for the guests who rent the condos.
Good location and value
This can either be a bed and breakfast or a vacation rental depending on preference. We stayed in the vacation rental, which included one bedroom, a bathroom, a living room, kitchen, and a dining area. This was good for us as a family. Parking is ample and the grounds are well kept. It was very peaceful and was just a few minutes of walking to get to the beach. It is in a good location in the Poipu area. I do recommend this place for value, and it had everything we needed for our stay. There is air conditioning, although opening the windows and letting the breeze come through is also nice. There is a hot tub for use. Also, the office has beach towels, bamboo maps, brochures, and books that guests can use. There is also a place to wash off the sandy clothes.
This place is THE BEST!
My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon to Hawaii. We spent one week at Poipu Plantation Resort B&B. We loved it. We enjoyed our time there even MORE than our stay at the Ritz Carlton in Maui. We stayed in the honeymoon suite, which was beautifully furnished and huge. They even put out fresh flower petals everyday all over the suite. The breakfast is wonderful (something different every morning) and was really a highlight each day. The owner does a great job making you feel at home and he is as hospitable as a favorite uncle, providing great recommendations for things to do and insights about local food, culture, and natural sights. They even let you borrow their snorkel equipment, beach towels, and coolers for free. The location of Poipu Plantation Resort is also perfect (2 minute walk to a great beach and centrally located to many of the major sites on Kauai).
We are already looking forward to our next trip to Kauai and will definitely be returning to the Poipu Plantation Resort B&B.
Adequate accomodations but the ants and insects were problems
My wife and I have used tripadvisor quite extensively in the past for accomodations throughout Italy, Miami, Puerto Rico and Hawaii and have had good results, except for this experience. We were very excited to stay at the Poipu Plantation because the garden view, one bedroom condos looked very clean and spacious on their website. The condo, we received, the Ilima was spacious with very high ceilings, however we unhappily did not find the accomodations clean. Granted, we are from NYC and are honestly not used to living in such a rural area but we did have a very bad ants and insects problem. In their welcome letter, they remark, not to leave food on the counters and we completely followed these rules but regardless, there were so many ants running about the kitchen, bathroom and even on the dresser. It was not a pleasant to see ants running around your contact case in the mornings. We think the problem must be how the condos were built and there are too many holes for the ants to crawl into the condo. Moreover, for a couple of nights we had an insect problem (looked like nats) and my wife was bitten 10 times! We notified the office, who gave us bug spray and inspected our condo but said they did not find anything (I have photos of the ants and a couple of dead insects though). As for the ok parts, Poipu Plantation is reasonably priced, is located close to the beaches and their front desk is very helpful. Perhaps our experience was an isolated experience or maybe other Koloa accomodations have the same problems. Unfortunately, due to the ants and insect problem our stay at the Poipu Plantation was the worst of our 4 different hotels in Hawaii because we felt so uncomfortable. Luckily, we were usually out enjoying Kauai so we did spend much time in our room.
Vacation Rental Paradise
We stayed in the 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo with full kitchen AND ocean view for 4 nights. The accomodations were great- the fresh flowers were so welcoming. Chris and Javed were fantastic hosts- their suggestions from beaches and day-trips to even dessert at a great restaurant were always on the mark. The availability of beach towels, beach chairs, and snorkeling equipment really made it feel like home. You can stay at a big name resort for big money or stay here at this great little hideaway surrounded by beautiful greenery and spend your savings on your adventures. ENJOY!!!!!!
Definitely a thimbs up!
We shared a 2 bedroom condo with my brother and sister-in-law for 5 days and were very pleased with both the accommodations and service. Not only was the condo clean and quiet but the location was great. Chris and Javed offered us terrific suggestions for activities, restaurants, etc. and made the necessary phone calls. We have quite a bit of traveling and consider this as a place we would return to in the future.
Stayed in the two-bedroom condo, which is extremely spacious and offers a nice view of the ocean. It's a five-minute walk to beautiful Poipu Beach, where hotels are situated that are likely three times the price with much tighter living quarters. It lacks the fancy pools and other amenties that require three years to pay off the vacation, but has really all you need with a great room, extremely friendly and helpful staff, free use of snorkeling equipment, and a mango tree with the best mangoes on earth. I learned of this place on TripAdvisor, so naturally felt obligated to rate it.
Who needs the ritz
Stayed in a 2BR, Ocean View condo. We arrived late on a Friday, picked up the keys from the message board and walked into a small apartment, decorated with fresh flowers (plumeria blossums everywhere). The next morning Chris and Javed told us everywhere worth visiting on the island, drew maps, gave us books with marked pages, gave us towels and other beach equipment and sent us on our way. We learned quickly on that if Chris or Javed to do something, DO IT!. They know the BEST places, food, beach, golf, swimming - you name it.
As others have said, it's not plush, but, who needs that. The value is in the size of the accommodation and the air conditioning. Trade winds are nice, but 80 is 80. You would be hard pressed to find people as friendly and helpful as the Poipu Beach people. Others have negatively commented on picayune things - Understand that some people feel it is their duty to complain.
If you want a nice, quiet, clean place with plenty of room to spread out, relax and enjoy your vacation, this is THE place.
Absolutely LOVED this place!!!!
We stay here for our honeymoon, and absolutely adored it!! Everyone who works there is incredibly nice and helpful, our room (the Ali'i Suite) was amazing and the breakfasts sooo delicious! When we got there (after almost 20 hours of traveling!), it was so nice to find our keys waiting for us and enter a room simply covered in flowers! The chocolates didn't hurt either. =) We felt by staying here that we were truly experiencing the island at its best, instead of just staying at yet another expensive resort. When we go back to Hawaii, we'll definitely be staying here again!
Owners and Staff-- The Best!!!
Our stay here (in the Master Suite) was absolutely wonderful. Why?
-- Location: nice quite street near ocean, beach restaurants w/in walking distance or short drive
-- Room Spacious, clean, comfortable, great shower, Lanai with nice landscaping and flowering tree in front
-- use of beach equipment
-- breakfasts, gourmet quality; delicious and healthy
-- Javad's daily tips and directions
-- The Staff; the elegance and desire to create a comforting atmosphere. Javad, Chris, housekeeper Audrey, maintenance guy, etc.-- you are all great to be around. One of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii has hanging out and chatting w/ Javad.
For those looking for more of a "resort" or hotel like facility; you can have the big chains with their crowds (that make me feel like I never left my Midwest suburb) and overpriced rooms w/ parking lot views; just leave this room available for me when I return, because I have to have it!!
A beach at Poipu,Kauai
Looking for a place to stay in Poipu for our wedding guests in June '07
We are looing for a place to accomodate our guests in the Poipu/Koloa area this June. We originally looked at Waimea Plantation Cottages, but they are too far West (not a convenient location), their beach is unswimmable, and they are not willing to let us use our own caterer or musicians for the wedding (if we had it on their site). So, now we are looking to find a place where we all can be together (20 people or so), that is convenient to shopping, restaurants, etc. Close to the ocean would be great, too, but we DO NOT want a resort. We are also on a shoestring budget :-)
Also, I know this is a travel website, but if there are any locals (or others)out there who know good local musicians (Jawaiian, Hawaiian, etc.), a nice place for a reception close to the ocean, a good caterer, florist, and/or bakery for the cake, we'd really appreciate any tips. We are finding that the minute you mention the word "wedding" to any vendor, the prices go up. We understand weddings are a business in Hawaii, but we are getting married there because we feel a spiritual connection to the island, the people, and it's natural beauty. We don't want to spend a fortune; we want the people we love around us in a place that means a lot to us when we make this committment.
RE: Looking for a place to stay in Poipu for our wedding guests in June '07
As for the place to stay Grantham resorts has several properties in the area a couple of the more budget friendly ones are Kuhio Shores, Waikomo Stream Villas.
RE: Looking for a place to stay in Poipu for our wedding guests in June '07
My Husband and I just returned from Poipu. We stayed with friends most of the time but we did spend a little time at the Poipu Plantation B&B and cottages. There was a wedding group there when we were. They seemed very happy. The management was just as nice and helpful as could be. Lovely breakfast and a quick walk to the beach and the beach front park.
We were in the Master bedroom. Very clean and neat, very large areain the dressing room and bathroom. This room was bit dated, but we enjoyed it, along with the lanai.
The A'li i rooms were all more updated. The cottages looked so fresh and cute, but we never saw the interiors.
I would stongly recommend this to anyone looking for a clean, charming, reasonable place. One side note...they have a couple lovely well behaved dogs. The owners were very conscientious about them. I loved them, but one of the guests had allergies,
Wonderful people with a true Mahalo spirit.
You may want to check around Koloa town for some of the other necessities.
