More about Maui Kai Condominiums
Maui Kai #504
Had an excellent stay at Maui Kai #504 this December, great condo with lots of amenities. Ocean views were gorgeous in the morning and early evening. Very quiet condo, not too many kids or families which was nice. Only complaint was that the bed was very hard with scratchy worn sheets. Slept on top of the comforter most nights. Highly recommend Four Winds II molokini snorkeling and dinner at Mama's in Paia too!
Maui Kai, unit 404 Nov 8th to 18th
My husband and I booked our trip to the Maui Kai via a travel broker in June. We asked for a corner unit on an upper floor. Mistake was not to book directly with the Maui Kai, we are quite certain we would have gotten a corner unit had we booked directly and the price would have been lower as well. When we arrived there was no corner unit available to us and were given unit 1004. The unit was very, very dated and very worn out. It seemed clean but was so worn out that it was hard to tell. Since it was late at night we stayed in the room for the night and complained in the AM. The staff was very nice and offered us the choice of 2 others. 104 and 404. Unit 104 was lovely, very modern and upgraded but lanai is not as private as it is ground level. Unit 404 was lovely as well and we were very happy to take that unit. I can not imagine how anyone would accept unit 1004 after seeing the Mau Kai brochure. That said, our unit was all we had expected, the view was spectacular and we had everything we needed including a cooler and ice packs for those day trips around the island.
We made full use of the well equiped kitchen and shopped both at the Safeway (lahaina) which was expensive, not clean with rude staff and the Star market which was a great store better prices and selection and within walking distance. The farmers market just down the road was great for fruits veggies etc. and had the greatest homemade maccadmia nut cookies.
We also appreciated and made use of the computer which was free to use to email back home as well as the BBQ and full kitchen by the pool.
We had a great stay at the Maui Kai and would highly recommend it, with caution that not all units are the same and best to book directly with the Maui Kai.
We had a pleasant time at unit #306 at the Maui Kai. It is a small room where the balcony has been "fenced in" so that the size of the room is bigger and that really helps. But then you don't have a balcony. It was very very windy when we were there. The wind whistled through and the waves pounding made a lot of noise.
We did really enjoy the pool which was perfect for our 4 year old. A small pool, it was warm and the hot tub next to it was nice.
We enjoyed the stereo and have become fans of Iz from listening to his CDs. The gift basket was also very nice.
The unit was comfortable and clean. The washer driers were close to the unit, on each floor. The staff at the front were very nice. We spent some time at the beach of the next door Embassy Hotel, as the Maui Kai really did not have a beach. But it was literally 3 feet away to get to the other beach.
We could have done better
We booked at the Maui Kai 12/04 Room 303 based on reviews read online at Trip Advisor. We were disappointed. Yes you can see and hear the ocean, but that is not exclusive here. The room was old, barely clean, had NOTHING in it in the way of spices for cooking except salt and pepper and when I asked for some sugar packets for coffee I was told it was for the 'GUESTS' (what was I????) First desk clerk very pleasant, on the following nights we had a very surly woman who was not at all nice. We should have just found something else, but were too tired and it was a quick trip. They may think of adding ventilation in the restrooms, it was very moldy in there. We will not stay again.
A great time at #306
Caren and I have stayed at the Marriot on both Maui and Kaui and now we wish we had stayed at the Maui Kai.
Insanely closer to the water than any property around, there was always something to watch out the window. Whales, para-surfers, surfing etc.
The unit was completley outfitted, including the CD driving guide to Hana!
The pool and hottub area was great where we cooked fresh fish on the BBQ provided (the Star Market and fresh fish market were within easy walking distance), found info on the internet from the terminal in the cabana, and relaxed in the hottub.
The unit was clean and had absolutley everything you need to be in Hawaii in including snorkel gear and boogie boards.
This complex has no restaraunt but the Embassy right next door had poolside, beach front dining with live entertainment and while we didn't make it up there this trip, a 18 hole miniature golf course on the roof you can play for 5 bucks!
A suprise touch was a basket of fruit with a pineapple, papaya, and cookies. You reserve this unit through the owner and this process was as painless and pleasant as could be.
Take a left out of the complex and a 1 mile, uninhabited (no hotels or houses on the beach) beach walk awaited us all the way to Black Rock.
The unit is interesting in that the sides and top of the lanai has been closed in allowing the unit to be a much larger space than others in the complex. And the tile work throughout was really nice.
When we return to Maui, we will head straight to the Maui Kai.
Unit 306-Great Value and Location
We stayed at the Maui Kai Unit 306 November 16-21 and had a wonderful time. Certainly I have stayed at more posh places, but for $115/night so close to the ocean that it literally kept us awake at night, it was a great find. We rented through a website from the owner, so we didn't get daily maid service, but we got the same location and access to facilities,washer/dryer, pool, jacuzzi, internet, etc. Condo owner supplied snorkeling gear, boogie boards, Maui books and tapes, restaurant info, attraction coupons, and a very classy gift basket of Hawaiian goodies on arrival in addition to linens, kitchen utensils, dish detergent, soap, shampoo, etc. Clean, though we noticed rare bugs (It's the tropics..you would expect that.). Next door to the Embassy Suites on Kaanapali. You can walk to a small shopping center nearby. Many nice restaurants and shops in Whalers' Village an 8-10 min drive away. Great snorkeling there and at Kahekili Beach 5 min away. The first day we were out dolphins were playing in the ocean right there. We saw some of the earliest humpback whales from the lanai the day we left. Only 2 complaints-the ocean really does keep you awake at times because the lanai has been enclosed to make the room larger and there's only the window to keep the sound out, and we only got 4 bath towels for 2 people for 5 nights. You can pay more for daily maid service or wash/dry towels for total of $2.75/load to avoid this problem. For the money, though, I don't think you can beat it on Maui.
Location! Location! Location!
You cannot find a property closer to the ocean than the Maui Kai. We stayed their during a winter swell and sat on our lanai watching the surfers all day.. what a thrill! After the swell went down we were treated to a kite surfing show. After that, we found the best snorkeling was just in front of our condo. This is a great property that still has true aloha. We could not believe all the complimentary amenities! Free local and 800 calls, free parking (and plenty of it), free use of the electronic safe, free HBO and Disney Channels, Free coffee AND three flavors of capuccino every morning from 7-9AM, even free internet access! In addition, this is one of the few condos that offers daily maid service with no cleaning fees. Don't forget to attend the Managers Orientation three times a week to help plan your weekly itinerary. (After the orientation we received free bagles with luscious macadamia nut cream cheese and Starbucks coffee!!). You just can't beat this property...it does not matter which room you stay in..they are all direct oceanfront with total unobstructed views of the ocean. This is a great place to whale watch too! When you are there don't forget to visit the "cabana". A great little gathering place with a heated pool, great jacuzzi, gas barbeques and a full kitchen available for your use, complete with table tennis, darts and a lending library. Need I say more?
High expectations were not met
After reading so many glowing reviews on this site, my husband and I decided to stay at this resort. Yes the sound of the waves is very nice, from the 3rd floor you really feel close to the sea, the resort is nice, etc.
However, unless you are an avid snorkeller, you cannot swim directly in front of the condo. The waves are really high (went there in November) and there are rocks everywhere. You have to walk a good 20 minutes to reach a nice beach with no rocks (Kaanapali beach near the Sheraton Maui, actually that whole beach is very nice). Also, our condo unit, even though very clean and fully equipped, was old.
Next time we come to Maui we would either stay directly on Kaanapali beach, or down south in Wailea.
Maui Kai #201
I have booked this room for our honeymoon in Oct. 2006 for two weeks and was wondering if anyone has had experience with Maui Kai condos.
I would like to get some suggestions on places to eat or things to do like where is good to snorkle, scuba, shop, etc.
Also, what is everyones opinion on the best LUAU on the island.
Thanks for your suggestions.
RE: Maui Kai #201
An easy and comprehensive way to find out about Maui is to utilize the search function in the upper right hand corner.
RE: Maui Kai #201
We went to the Old Lahaina Luau. I think it was $60-$80 per person, but well worth it. Food was incredible. Drinks were included, and the bartenders were heavy handed. The show was great. It is a traditional Hawaiian Luau, so there were not any fire-dancers.
If you want to see fire-dancers, I have heard the Luau at the Hyatt is good. Food isn't as good.
Restaurants: Lahaina... you need to go to Longhi's. Make a reservation.
RE: Maui Kai #201
Thanks so far for the information about the luau. That sounds great and maybe we will do both as we will be there for two weeks.
RE: Maui Kai #201
There is a current review on Trip Advisor:
Among much more information, it says,
"The old adage about getting what you pay for is absolutely correct. There are some cheaper units in the Maui Kai complex, but 201 is a corner unit with the only full size lanai in the place. The condominium was true to the owner's advertisements on the web and all the great reviews on tripadvisor.com were absolutely correct. The condo is gorgeous and very comfy which made it a great home away from home. EVERYTHING in this place is top of the line. We loved the lanai where we could watch the whales, dolphins, kite surfers and great sunsets. We couldn't believe how many whales we saw and how close they were. Watching the baby whales breach over and over again was spectacular. All the little touches are what set this condo apart from the rest - it was well-stocked, well-furnished and well-equipped. The granite clad kitchen had everything you could possibly need - stainless steel appliances, nice pots/pans, storage bags and containers, spices, a toaster, nice dinnerware and most importantly an awesome blender which was great for fruity drinks on the deck. The bedroom is large with modular closets to store all your clothes, a comfy bed and high-thread count sheets that are super-soft. The bathroom is good size and well-stocked. There are lots of beach towels, beach chairs, boogie boards, fins and snorkel gear for hitting the beach as well. I can't say enough good things about the condo itself - we simply loved it!"
