Hale Makani Kai, Hauula Vacation Rental House: Sleepless in Hauula

Booked 4 nights at this rental house and left after the 1st night. Noisy and inefficient window airconditioners in bedrooms. Since they were so loud and not really cooling the room, we decided to turn them off and just open the windows (the ones that weren't painted shut) and use the ceiling fan. No air conditioner in living room area so it was very hot and uncomfortable there. Barking dogs on both sides of house all night, lots of traffic noise due to house being about 10 feet from main highway. At one point during the night, a truck parked off the side of the road right under house and fumes from truck were coming into bedroom for about an hour. Not a relaxing place to stay unless you enjoy noise and dingy surroundings. Nothing luxurious at all about this place or the area. It's the top floor of a commercial looking building with the bottom part being used as an art gallery. Very limited outdoor parking. There is another rental unit on the property but we didn't stay there. It was really small and looked like it might be a converted garage. I could only feel sorry for the people who had to stay there.

If we had stayed here for the rest of the time it would have ruined our vacation, glad we left early but had to fight for partial refund. Also, very expensive ($150) cleaning deposit and the bathrooms weren't even that clean. Website we used to find this place had nothing but glowing reviews, not sure what's up with that but if you stay here, bring earplugs, and have a backup plan just in case you need to vacate early.

A couple of plus things about this place.... it had a great view, no beach, but a great ocean view. The owner was very helpful about tourist stuff if you forgot to bring a guide or map. If you want to cook something and do laundry at the same time, it's REALLY convenient because the washer and dryer are in the kitchen right next to the stove! Oh, and yes, the Hauula area, like most of the north shore, does have "rural simplicity", as in pickup trucks and dueling ukuleles. Renter beware. Would never stay here again.
