Coffee. Coffee. Coffee: Our "Kimo-Therapy"
by keida84 about Kimo Bean Coffee
Located in the Ambassador Hotel Waikiki, Kimo Bean is a great place to stop and take a well deserved coffee break.
The smell of Kimo Bean's coffee is what first enticed us and I will tell you we were not disappointed. I discovered Kimo Bean actually on Maui (the location has since closed) but here on the island of Oahu they have 2 locations. The other is located in the Hyatt Waikiki. They also have a store on the Big island of Hawaii.
Addendum: I got to visit the Kimo Bean at the Hyatt Regency in Waikiki. They have a great selection of coffees and great tasting salads, pastas, and desserts. Kimo Bean offers different roasts of coffee. Try the Kauai blend for a smooth mellow cup that holds milk or cream well.
The Maui blend is back after a long hiatus and is a rich blend that is drinkable without cream or sugar!
I have been using Kimo Bean's online store now for years, it is our "Kimo-Therapy" :-) $18.00 a pound

Navy Veteran question.
by rjeubanks
Can a U.S. Navy veteran shop in the Honolulu Post Exchanges? I have been living in Mexico and now am going to Honolulu and was wondering if I could use any of the military facilities? Thanks for your help. Jerry

If you have a retired military/DOD ID you can. Just being a veteran will not get you in. I have a federal ID that will get me on all military bases, but it will not let me shop in the PX or Class Six, etc. Some shops you can get past the front door, but can't make it through check out. Other shops they won't even let you past the front door.

I have to admit that although I am not a vet, I have often wondered how this worked, since my mother-in-law routinely shops at Fort Myer in Arlington VA using her military ID, which she has because her husband (long deceased) was a career Air Force officer.
Also the Army /Air Force Exchange is a huge employer in the Dallas area, and they operate many(?)/all(?) PXs?
Anyway, look at http://odin.aafes.com/conus_wer/hawaii/chooser.htm
for the location of AAFES facilities in Hawaii, then look at
http://www.salutetoyourservice.com/archives/28
for a discussion of who is authorized to shop at AAEFES facilties...and see if that helps...

As someone who recently left the service, you have to be retired to take advantage of that benefit. Most of the fast food places are open to the public and some events, but the tax-free shopping is one benefit you have to retire to get.

There are several places you can use on base like the food courts, banks, and fast food places. But the PX/BX, class six, and commissary won't let you in. We have been to the Hale Koa and drank ate at the bar for a couple of hours without anybody asking for any ID. However, to book a room you must have a DOD ID or DOD contrator ID. They have it pretty well spelled out on their www site. BTW: the Hale Koa is awesome and has one of the best locations on Ohau ever.
