Pililaau Army Recreation Centre: Right on the beach.....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • WOW! what a place.... right on the beach, clean and comfy.... not too expensive $74 a night for the whole cabin which can be shared by 4 people.... self catering with a good kitchen and fridge, microwave and pots and pans etc.... everything for 6 people...

This one had two bedrooms, a double and two single beds, with room for more on the couch.

The accomodation was basic but clean, TV and phone... naturally we took the laptop to connect with VT and the calls were unlimited but it cost 50c to connect.
It's really for army people, but I was lucky enough to have a sponsor...

The beach was 20 metres away??? you woke up each morning to this wonderful view and the prospect of a sparkling day...

That Saturday we left there was a surfing competition which was fun to watch from the balcony...

Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort And Spa: Great location, perfect for our needs    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This hotel was very nice and fit our needs. The rooms were quite large. We didn't add a cot to our two doubles, but one could have easily fit. We had an ocean view and a nice balcony to enjoy evenings on. I actually enjoyed quite a few nights eating breakfast or snacks there that I had stored in my fridge.

The music from the hotel next door could be nice at times, annoying at night when I was trying to sleep. Although, I was usually so tired, it didn't matter how loud it sounded.

Pluses: Hotel has a lot of things onsite -- two ABC stores for basic needs, restaurants and stores, plus two concierge desks located in different parts of the hotel with usually two concierges working both desks (meaning four total), and a very nice spa.

Drawbacks: the pools were smallish for a resort. . Elevators were very slow (partly because all 400 girls and parents had to be places at certain times or tried to go back to their rooms at the same time)

I don't know how much my room was because it was part of the package deal we got through AACD

Location is great if you don't want to be situated in the middle of the wackiness of Waikiki. It's situated on the far end of the strip so it's quieter, but close enough to easily walk everywhere.

There is a small beach area with a protective breakwall (almost a completely walled in beach area), so it's safe, but not as pretty as a natural ocean. There are fish in here, and the girls and I brought bread down and fed them (looked like a piranha frenzy after awhile).

Hale Koa Hotel: Hale Koa Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • All the rooms are basically the same---one king, two queen or two double beds with air-conditioning, the usual assortment of bathroom complimentary items, data ports, and a cooling cabinet for drinks. Most of the rooms also have a lanai. They are comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. The hotel consists of 2 towers with 817 rooms, several restaurants, 3 pools, a video game room, a BX as well as many other stores, a health club, a parking garage with $4/day parking for it's guests (a real bargain in Waikiki), and 3 dinner shows.
The Hale Koa is a huge hotel complex within Fort DeRussey Park. Fort DeRussey Park in in on the Honolulu end of Waikiki, on the beach and next to the Hilton. At the entrances to the hotel complex are military personel checking id's. You can't even get on the property without proper id.

It may not be any cheaper than staying at an average hotel in Waikiki, but this is not an average place. The grandeur, security, and location of this hotel makes it worth the rate.

The Hale Koa is a military built and run hotel. This hotel is for people in, or retired from, or a family member of someone in the military, the Coast Guard, Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service, or Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or in the U.S. Department of Defense Civilians. Rates are determined by rank and room category---better the view and higher rank, the more you pay.

Kai Aloha Apartment Hotel: Ku'u Home, Almost

We always stay at the Kai Aloha when we go to Honolulu because, for us, it's the next best thing to home. It's simple, clean, and comfortable.

"Our" apartment has one double bedroom and one bath, with twin beds in the living room that double as couches during the day. It's especially good for families with children, because it has a kitchenette where you can prepare meals (thus saving money), and there's daily maid service and use of the washer and dryer on the ground floor. There's air conditioning, but we didn't always need it -- you can open the windows and let the trade winds blow through.

Smaller apartments are also available for couples. Please note that the price below is per person for a family of four.

The Kai Aloha is centrally located in Waikiki, half a block from the beach and the post office, and within walking distance of the International Marketplace. The Bus runs right past the door. If there's anything you need or have questions about, Miss En Chang in the front office is very accommodating and a wealth of information.

Outrigger Reef On The Beach: Woudn't Be My Choice on Waikiki    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I didn't stay at the Outrigger, but I ate there twice and friends were staying there, so I was able to check out the rooms. I saw enough to be sure I wouldn't want to stay there and pay luxury prices for Motel 6 quality.

The rooms at the Outrigger don't cost all that much less than our room at the Ali'i Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village - but I thought there was NO comparison. The decor and furniture looked cheap compared to the Hilton. The "city view" double room I saw was so tiny there was only room for a small table between the two twin beds. Very tiny bathroom, too.

In another larger room (a suite) with partial ocean view, the balcony seemed very narrow. The balcony also gave the feeling of being slightly tilted and too open or unprotected (I'm not saying it WAS dangerous) - so no one really wanted to stand out on it. It just wasn't comfortable.

Then there was the 20-something party going on in the next room which was so bad the hotel finally threw them out. I know, it's not the hotel's fault, but the experience was not positive.

The lobby is plain, but the restaurants were fine - service was friendly and the beach-front setting was lovely, especially in the evening. The food at Chuck's Steakhouse was surprisingly good.

The shop in the lobby that sells Hawaiian shirts had some great deals on men's silk shirts on the sale rack. A friend who lives on Oahu and joined us for lunch actually bought a couple of shirts because they were so nice and such a great price.

The Hotel is directly on the beach - but be aware that the Waikiki beach isn't really the best in the world. It is rather narrow, and the sand is coarse.

Hilton Hawaiian Village': Beachfront Hotel    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This hotel is AMAZING! Very spacious rooms, gorgeous landscaping, and friendly staff. We stayed in the Rainbow Tower which is right on Waikiki Beach. View was spectacular! I suggest asking for an ocean-view room as opposed to city view. You will be in heaven sitting on your hotel balcony, listening to the waves crash as the surfers hit the waves early each morning. Or at night, listening to the music from the luau's, watching fireworks, or just resting after a long day in the sun.

Hilton Hawaiian Village': A Nice Place    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I stayed at the Hilton using the Hilton Points I earned while travelling on business, so the price was right for me! I stayed in the Lagoon Tower (I think) in a suite, and the only drawback was no TV in the bedroom. However, I believe the entire hotel has been renovated since I visited in 1999.

The pool and beach areas were quite nice, and they have spa services in case you need a massage to help you unwind and enjoy your vacation - which I sure did!

There are plenty of shops on site, and it's also walking distance to the Ala Moana Mall.
