CRATER OF THE MOON NATIONAL MONUMENT
Driving for about 1 1/2 hours north of Twin Falls, Idaho, on Hwy 93, you come to view one of the most fantastic sights in the vast fields of lava. I though I was on the Big Island of Hawaii when I first saw the black lava rocks looming ahead. The last volcanic activity here was 2100 years ago but the area is still only dormant.
Turning into the Park itself, there is a visitors center on the left with a gift shop as well. Picked up my Native American made walking stick at this store for all the walking I was about to do. Lots of trails lead through the many lava flow areas. Many self drive loops to see the splendors of cinder cones, spatter cones, lava tubes, and different types of lava flows. There are also 52 overnight campsites with tables, cooking grills (no firepits allowed), with restrooms nearby. This is a first come, first serve campgrounds. No reservations. Worth the side trip, or if you heading north to Montana.
