Omni Chicago Hotel: Lots of space in the sky    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is an all-suite hotel. Oprah used to put her show's guests up here [she may still, I don't know]
    .
To enter the hotel you take an elevator to the 5th floor. The suites are dark colors, clubby looking and comfortable.
    .
We did have a problem with a sliding door that never got fixed after 3 calls. This is a great family setup, but we haven't stayed there again.

Hotel 71: Hoping for the Hip Crowd    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The management here is hoping for a young and trendy clientele, and they certainly have succeeded in revitalizing the old "Executive Inn" which formerly occupied this space. From the sleek design of the (small) lobby to the designer vodkas on offer in the bar to the techno music in the elevators, Hotel 71 seeks to define itself as a haven for the leopardskin and Prada set.

One possible drawback is the location - it's a few blocks off desirable Michigan Ave. Another shortcoming is the lack of elevators - there are only four public elevators for hundreds of rooms. But as long you don't expect this to be the Four Seasons, chances are you'll be satisfied here - espcially if you get a good rate from one of the hotel discounting websites!

Be sure to ask for a room with a river-view.

Hotel Burnham - a Kimpton Boutique Hotel: Vintage Hotel in the Loop    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Hotel Burnham under went a major facelift a few years ago. It's a small, vintage "boutique" hotel in the heart of the Loop. The rooms are small but well furnished and decorated. And the architecture and building history are facinating. The hotel is a unique mix of vintage charm and contemporary style. If you like smaller hotels with personality this one's for you. It's not far from the Art Institute, Marshall Fields and the Loop Theatres. Public transportation is easily accessed too. The only problem with staying in the Loop is that it tends to die down in the evenings and on the weekends. They are trying to revive the nightlife in the Loop, but I think that's a couple years off.

The Hotel Burnham has been recently restored to show off some of the original architecture and is gorgeous. They have complementary wine near the fireplace in the (very small) lobby in the afternoons. And the hotel restaurant, Cafe Atwood, is very good, but fills up quickly so reservations are recommended.

Hyatt Regency Chicago: Another Good Choice    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I like Hyatts - and this one is no exception. Although it took me a while to check in (unsuprising for a Friday afternoon & something I unwittingly could have circumvented by having joined the Hyatt gold club earlier that day for free) i thought this place was good. Again some good views of the city & river, good location and the rooms must have recently been refurbed as the lovely smell of new carpet wafted under my nose as I swept open the door.

There is a good Irish plpace just down the street (Wacker) which I can recommend for a hearty (and heart attacke rendering) cheapy breakfast

Swissotel Chicago: Chicago Swiss    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Swissotel is situated right off the Chicago River, on Wacker Drive, just 4 blocks from theMagnificent Mile. The hotel puts you right in the middle of the Chicago Loop, and Michigan Ave, putting all the main attractions in easy walking distance for even lazy walkers like me.

The hotel also provides guest with great views of Chicago, from any room in the hotel. We stayed on the south side facing beautiful Grant park, and Michigan Lake right out our window. From the north side of the hotel, u are treated with views of Navy pier and North Michigan Ave.

The hotel provides great dining with 2 on sight restaurants, and also a great cocktail lounge in the lobby.

One of the great highlights of th hotel was its penthouse spa. located on the 41st floor, it provides aerobic machines, strenth equipment, sauna, whirlpool and a 45ft. heated swimming pool.

You cant beat swimming in a heated pool while you watch snow flurries coming down over th chicago skyline...

Cass Hotel: Tourist area hotel with ok prices.    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • When we drove into Chicago, we just picked a hotel at random and that happened to be the Hotel Cass. I think we got lucky since the hotel rates were reasonable for a downtown hotel (about 100 US dollars) and the staff were very friendly about where to go for food and some music.

The hotel room I had was plain by any standards and was comfortable. It was like your average hotel. The lobby feels like a colleg dorm and the rooms are a bit on the old side, but the place will save you cash for your Chicago adventures and still keep you happy. I've been to this hotel now on 2 seperate occasions and have no regrets.

Parking is in the nearby parking lot and cost about 20 US dollars a day. I suggest parking your car when in Chicago since the traffic can be utterly insane. Don't forget to have the parking ticket validated by the hotel for a discount.

There's tones of stuff to do around the hotel, with a nearby University to offer some interesting funky places to go to.

UPDATE: It's now a Holiday Inn. Same hotel, modernized, without the Sea of Happiness now (saddly), and same prices. Was still the same place but with newer decor and a bigger TV :)

Good location down near Michigan street. A small bar in the front of the hotel is friendly and a great place to grab a drink before, and after your evening excursions (now gone!).

Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago-CTB: Magnificent location    Check Rates
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Location is really key with this hotel. Its at the intersection of Delaware and Michigan, right on the Magnificent Mile and overlooking Lake Michigan. It makes a great base for exploiring downtown, the museums, etc. There is a bus stop about a block away, the John Hancock Building right across the street and its only a short walk to Lincoln Park, the lake and Navy Pier.

The hotel is on the pricey side with decent sized rooms, not too bad considering space is at a premium in Chicago. The lakefront rooms have a fantastic view too. There is one restaurant advertised as "fine dining" and a more casual restaurant and bar, but there are better options, both fancy and casual, within blocks of the hotel.

I'd heard a lot of complaints about service at this hotel, and it really is hit or miss. Almost everyone was friendly and helpful, but the front desk appeared to be having a few problems.

Its all about the location. There are so many things within walking distance from the hotel that you'll hardly need a bus pass, let alone a car.

Carlton Midway Motor Inn: The Place to Be!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I loved the Carlton Inn and I will tell you more about it. It is next to Pindos. I stayed there on my Chicago trip with Katie and Colin. First thing was the price which was like $120/night but we split it 3 ways so it wasn't too bad. We were in a smoking room. They provided two ashtrays. One between the two beds and one on the shelf in the bathroom. We didn't use those. The second great thing about the room was the weird shower curtain. It had a clear panel at eye level enabling you to see who is in the shower at any given time. Cool. The weirdest thing was that there was a frame that had 3- 4"x6" photos in it of some dog. It was hilarious. We later found out that the dog was owned by the owner or manager of the Carlton Inn and the dog would make morning appearances in the lobby. Another great thing was the fact that the Carlton Inn says "free donuts!" until 9am but really you can get them as late as 12pm. Cool. You will be able to recognize the Carlton Inn by the deep red painted rocks outside that match the sign.
