Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport: Terminal Hotel   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • We were stranded here when the airlines decided to cancel all flights into NYC without any snow falling. BRILLIANT!
Although we were given a free room at some off airport hotel I wanted to check this place out. And got another Hilton Stay out of it.

Congress Plaza Hotel & Convention Center: Congress Plaza-still on strike   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • 5/19/07 update-I walked past today and there are still picketers outside this hotel

This isn't a statement for or against unions, the workers at the Congress Hotel or the hotel management since I'm not all that familiar with the issues, just a warning to anyone considering staying there.

Workers at the Congress Plaza Hotel have been striking since June 2003 and from what I understand the protesters are out there every day although not in great numbers and low on enthusiasm now that the strike is nearing it's 4th anniversary. Just my opinion, a hotel with striking employees would not be my first choice for accomodations.

Carlton Midway Motor Inn: The Place to Be!
  • Tip Rating:

  • I loved the Carlton Inn and I will tell you more about it. It is next to Pindos. I stayed there on my Chicago trip with Katie and Colin. First thing was the price which was like $120/night but we split it 3 ways so it wasn't too bad. We were in a smoking room. They provided two ashtrays. One between the two beds and one on the shelf in the bathroom. We didn't use those. The second great thing about the room was the weird shower curtain. It had a clear panel at eye level enabling you to see who is in the shower at any given time. Cool. The weirdest thing was that there was a frame that had 3- 4"x6" photos in it of some dog. It was hilarious. We later found out that the dog was owned by the owner or manager of the Carlton Inn and the dog would make morning appearances in the lobby. Another great thing was the fact that the Carlton Inn says "free donuts!" until 9am but really you can get them as late as 12pm. Cool. You will be able to recognize the Carlton Inn by the deep red painted rocks outside that match the sign.

The hotel is on the Michigan ave. along with department stores, shops, restaurants, and museum. The room is clean and comfortable (typical Hilton room) with Internet access.

The place can get very busy with people attending the events, and the room charge can be very expensive during that time. Always check several reservation websites as well as Hilton website to compare the pricing before you book.

They hold many conferences and events, and the facilitiy is conveniently set up with business center where you can use copy, fax, internet, package pick up and drop off, etc.

The Irish Pub on the ground floor is always clouded. Check out the nightly live music. (See my night life tips.)

Elms Hotel: A Family and Pet-Friendly Place
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • For families, especially those with pets, this could be a good solution for visiting downtown Chicago. It's sort of shabby, but then again, you won't feel bad if your kids whoop it up. I stayed there for a weekend with my husband and 3 boys. They were little kids at the time, and had a blast in the huge family suite they gave us, which was more like an old-fashioned apartment than a hotel room. My boys loved hiding in all the big empty closets...We stayed there in the winter and found it a little overheated for our taste. The elevators were also sort of slow. It's not the Ritz, but it certainly served the purpose.

The location is good. There's a beach one block away (which we didn't try out because we were there in the winter). The lakefront, Water Tower, John Hancock building, Michigan Ave. and other Chicago musts are right around the corner. The street is lined with trees, home to a huge squirrel population. We didn't have any pets with us, but apparently the hotel caters to the sort that bring their animals along on their travels. Short-term stays of 30 days or more are also possible. Some of the rooms have kitchen facilities.

  • Days Inn from the Street - Chicago
    Days Inn from the Street

Staying in the Days Inn Lincoln Park gives you the opportunity to experience a different side of Chicago. Located in the trendy North Side neighborhood, Lincoln Park, this little inn is situated between local shops, restaurants and apartments. You'll feel like you're living in the city, rather than visiting. The majority of the hotels are located in the Loop and Magnificent Mile area where the shops and restaurants are major chain stores and you're more likely to find a high tourist to local ratio. If you want a little more of the neighborhood-y Chicago feel look north to this little hotel. It is, at best, a Days Inn. But if all you need is a place to rest your head you can't beat it.

It's located away from the main tourist drag so you feel more like a local. But there are still tons of great restaurants and shops in the area so you won't feel isolated. It's also one of the more affordable hotels in the city.

The lobby is several floors up from street level. When the elevator opens you are enveloped in rich warm wood tones and leather couches around a roaring fireplace. There are floor to ceiling windows framing a view of the city from every direction and a friendly receptionist to check you in.

The semi-suite rooms are less expensive than others in Chicago with this location, and they offer free wireless. The sleeping area is separated from the living room and simple kitchen area. The decor of the rooms is simple, and nice, (in one of our rooms you could see a faint stain on the carpet about the size of a cubic foot, but it did not feel cheap).

The best part of the stay though was that Monday through Thursday Nights they serve a free dinner buffet that is just wonderful! The Thursday Night we were there they served an Italian Buffet with Spaghetti, Garlic Bread and various sauces. There was a small salad bar with fresh produce, and a wonderful desert bar with selections of brownies, chocolate cake, and apple pie. Employees went table to table filling your wine glass with free spirits, and there was a beverage machine which the kids could pick and refill their beverages as they pleased. I would definitely take advantage of this wonderful money saving feature of Homewood Suites. A family of four would have easily been charged $100.00 for this free all-u-can eat buffet with wine and beer.

I would not stay anywhere else in Chicago!

This is a wonderful, economical place to stay in Chicago. It is located in the middle of everything, and not too far from anything. Across the street is Nordstrom's, (a great department store).

You can jump on a free trolley that boards a block away and be taken to many of the wonderful activities Chicago has to offer.

The health club has a nice sized indoor pool which was empty the entire time we were there. The area is surrounded by floor to ceiling windows that offer magnificent views. Adjacent to the pool is the small fitness area with up to date equipment.

Usually when we visit a world class city such as Chicago we prefer to stay downtown within walking distance of the major attractions. However, on a recent business trip we were booked into the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. It turned out to be a great experience. Not only were we convenient to the airport, but a train station within walking distance of the hotel gave us easy access to downtown as well. This would be a good choice for those flying into Chicago, or for those who are driving but want to avoid the downtown traffic.

Restaurant, Pool, Meeting Rooms, etc., and connected to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. It is a 15 mile subway ride to Chicago's Loop.

    Various: Hotels with free parking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Parking fees can add quite a bit to your hotel stay in Chicago, usually in excess of $30 per day.

The two hotels that offer free parking that are most convenient to the sights are the Best Western River North (Ohio and LaSalle) and the Howard Johnson at 720 N. LaSalle. Both are located in the River North area, convenient to public transportation, many restaurants and shopping on Michigan Avenue.
