Friendly staff, clean rooms, best Midway location
I was not expecting much from this independent hotel located near Midway Airport in Chicago, yet was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is a 2 star hotel, although I'd say that the outside looks like a 1 star and the inside of the rooms 2-3 stars. The hotel clearly spent up on the bedding, which always feels right. The bathroom however is rather old-school and simple, although perfectly clean and fresh. The room was also perfectly clean and comfortable. Lobby was a bit small, and thus not an ideal place for the otherwise satisfying breakfast of Dunkin' Donuts breakfast sandwiches, fruits, and other good stuff.
Staff was really, really friendly. This made the hotel feel more small-townish than one would expect from a big city. Location was awesome- for Midway Airport hotels, that is- as it is the only one steps from the CTA El train. I went to downtown twice by train, and it took just 20 minutes. Chicago is awesome during the summer, and the train took me downtown and to Wrigley Park for a Cubs game!
Unique Quality: Superb staff, bedding, attention to detail. Convenient location to Midway (free shuttle) and the CTA L (or EL) train.

The Place to Be!
I loved the Carlton Inn and I will tell you more about it. It is next to Pindos. I stayed there on my Chicago trip with Katie and Colin. First thing was the price which was like $120/night but we split it 3 ways so it wasn't too bad. We were in a smoking room. They provided two ashtrays. One between the two beds and one on the shelf in the bathroom. We didn't use those. The second great thing about the room was the weird shower curtain. It had a clear panel at eye level enabling you to see who is in the shower at any given time. Cool. The weirdest thing was that there was a frame that had 3- 4"x6" photos in it of some dog. It was hilarious. We later found out that the dog was owned by the owner or manager of the Carlton Inn and the dog would make morning appearances in the lobby. Another great thing was the fact that the Carlton Inn says "free donuts!" until 9am but really you can get them as late as 12pm. Cool. You will be able to recognize the Carlton Inn by the deep red painted rocks outside that match the sign.
