Hilton is fairly comfortable & not too bad value, but too far down in the Loop if you are a tourist and it really could do with a lick of paint here & there!!
Unique Quality: The Queen stays here (according to the man on the bus tour??)
Directions: Go south on Michigan, keep going, no honestly keep going........
This historic hotel is one of the most beautiful hotels in Chicago. Even if you aren't staying here, you might want to come check it out. With over 1500 rooms, the place is always packed with people. The lobby is beautiful, and the ballrooms are a great place to attend a wedding, concert, or other function. I even had a Paris Hilton spotting here one Saturday night when I came for a concert.
The location is good if you want to be near museums or the businesses in the Loop. The hotel overlooks Grant Park, and is only a few blocks from the Art Institute. It is a short cab ride to all the shopping and restaurants.
Unique Quality: The rooms are great. The best feature is that double rooms have 2 full bathrooms! This was great for getting ready in the mornings. Other features include bathroom phones, safe, coffee/tea in room, extra towels/bedding, sitting area, refrigerator, minibar, and climate control. Each room is also soundproofed.
General hotel features include 24 hr front desk, room service, sauna, health club, pool, spa, beauty salon, concierge, cell phone rental, valet parking (about $35 per day with in/out privileges), safe deposit box, limo service, on-site shopping and restaurants, bar/lounge, business center, currency exchange, and complimentary shopping shuttle up Michigan Ave.
Directions: Balbo & Michigan (South of Congress Pkwy)
Valet parking is located on Balbo, and main entrance and cab stand is on Michigan.
Very, very nice......5 plus stars
Unique Quality: You can have a view of the Lake or the Sears Tower. Some of the King rooms have 2 bathrooms....that's a plus.
Old Cliffie stayed at the Hilton, a massive pile fronting Michigan Avenue and the lake, that has seen presidents come and go and famously featured in the closing scenes of 'The Fugitive' with Harrison Ford. It's a big convention hotel, which makes it all seem a bit impersonal at times, but if you get the convention rate, it's a bargain.
I need a floor plan for the Hilton, 9th floor and above - with room numbers.
You see, I've been staying at the Hilton in the fall for a convention once a year for several years, but this time I'm bringing my girlfriend. She likes to wake up to morning sunlight. Now I do like to pamper her, but not so much so that I'd pay for an east-facing room with a view of the lake. However, there are rooms on the southern side that have an east-facing window that would get morning sunlight, especially during the winter when the sun is away south.
Trying to explain all of this to a desk clerk sounds difficult; I'd like to be able to simply ask for a certain room number.
Can only find floor plans of the meeting rooms!
Without going into the whole explanation of the hows and whys, you should simply request a South facing room with partial eastern exposure above the 9th floor. The well-trained Hilton desk clerks should have little trouble filling the bill! (Don't be too surprised if they ask you a lot of questions, though, since the announcement of the 'plot' to blow up Chicago highrises might make your request sound 'fishy')
Enjoy our fair and windy city!
Exactly my thought, Pedersdottir.
But I was only going to add: I'm assuming our friend doesn't want to sleep in a meeting room, LOL!
Hotel desk agents are usually inundated with a million requests at a time, so it's better to ask the rooms controller or manager.
I would recommend calling or e-mailing the Front Office or Assistant Front Office Manager directly for the specific request. Get their name just in case you run into any problems.
Thanks everyone, but you're all suggesting that I do it the one way that I was trying to avoid because I suspect that it won't work. But thank you just the same.
In that case, why don't you ask one of the VT members that has stayed there?
Do a keyword search on VT with 'Chicago Hilton' and VT members grkboiler, CliffClaven will pop up.
I just called the Chicago Hilton reservations desk and spoke with Stacey. She reiterated what was mentioned before - call them and make your request. They will fill it 'pending availability of rooms' because the hotel frequently accommodates large groups who - as you know - take up large blocks of rooms. The direct phone number is 312-922-4400. Godd luck!
Er, what's a grkboiler....??
Greek, for sure; Boilermaker, just a guess.
Fine. I'll just put it in my rcetopper and forget about it.....
