    Hotel Sax

Great location, we walked EVERYWHERE. Rooms were clean, though a little on the small side though it never felt cramped (high ceilings & large windows and mirrors really did the trick) bathrooms refurbished it seemed? Service very friendly. Decor was a little too trendy for me (as were some of the guests ;)) but it was well priced and a comfortable stay so who cares? I'd stay there again if the price was right.

Hotel Sax (Formerly House of Blues Hotel)

The Hotel Sax is located right in Marina City, a unique block right in the heart of Chicago downtown that is also home to the House of Blues and the "Corn Cobs". The location is really fantastic, it has a wonderful atmosphere and is very centrally located.

The hotel doesn't look like much from the outside, it's a large rectangular building which despite being ~20 storeys high is dwarfed by it's neighbours. The entrance is on the forecourt of the House of Blues, shadowed by the corn-cobs. The lobby is unassuming, but well equipped with free computers & printers, 3 reception desks and a concierge. The reception staff were friendly, efficient and accomodating.

The lobby is also the home to the "Crimson Lounge", a night club which becomes a hive of activity in the evenings. We didn't visit this, but from the doors it appeared to have an elegant and sublime atmosphere.

To the side of the lobby there are a bank of high-speed lifts, we never had to wait more than a few seconds for one to arrive. I was staying in a standard double room on the 9th floor, which was impressively decorated in a modern, eclectic style. The room was very spacious and outfitted with a large plasma screen TV, free internet access and fancy furnishings. The bathroom was not modern, but was spacious and well equipped with quality fittings.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant that shares the building, BIN 36, which is a wine bar and italian restaurant by night. The breakfast was adequate, reasonably priced, but nothing special.

Several restaurants are located within a few minutes walking distance, including the iconic Harry Caray's italian steakhouse which is on the same block.

Highly recommended, one of the best hotels I've stayed in, in a great location and for a reasonable price.

Unique Quality: Situated right in the heart of Chicago, right next to the House of Blues.

Directions: Located in Marina City, next to the House of Blues. Virtually on the river where N State Street and N Dearborn Street cross the river.

Pretty expensive if we had to pay for it.

Sax Hotel is next to House of Blues, not on the list here, so I am assuming it has been renamed sometime. Fairly plush hotel, nice ultra modern lobby, and expensive. Regular rate was over $500, though we had an online reservation for less than half price. At that price, I can't recommend it, but pretty nice if that is what you need.

Unique Quality: Good view of big buildings from our 14th floor room.

I stay at the House of Blues Hotel about once a month. Coming down to Chicago from Milwaukee fror years, I have stayed at dozens of hotels ranging from the deluxe Ritz Carlton to the basic Lenox Suites. For the money, nothing comes close to The House of Blues. The rooms are quite commodious and are designed with style and panache. The service is fantastic, always with a smile and remembering your name and preferences. The restaurant attached to the hotel is the best wine bar in Chicago, Bin 36, where Jimmy and all the bartenders will take great care of your needs. The crowd at Bin 36 is warm, friendly, and sophisticated. The bar in the hotel is darn good also, and there is free entertainment every Friday and Saturday night. Want more: The House of Blues is pet friendly and takes wonderful care of my dog Tizzie Meloul.

Unique Quality: The service at the House of Blues is simply fantastique! This hotel cares about your stay with them.

Great Experience!!!

by TripAdvisor Member coachtone

We arrived on April 20th for 2 nights and before we arrived we had heard about the construction that was underway at the hotel but was pleasently supprized when we arrived. It is true that the main lobby is closed for remolding but we did not feel their was any inconvience with the temporary lobby on the 4th floor. We had heard that they were remolding the rooms with new carpet and a toned down wall and bed coverings. We arrive by 11:00 am that morning and we were told previously to get a coner room for better veiws and when we arrived a room was not avialable but they were very nice and told us that we would have a room with in the hour. We did get our room about 12:pm and the room was great. They have installed 42" flat screen TV's in the new rooms and you could still smell the new carpet. Everything about the room exceeded our expectations even though they were not huge, they were very well laid out. The only negatitive comments would be the cable tv could of had more chaneels and at least one movie channel. But overall re would stongly recommend this hotel because of their location and their rooms. Even though this hotel is transitioning to the HOTEL SAX, this is still a great place to stay.

House of Blues was great!

by TripAdvisor Member cunn6776

Stayed at the House of Blues while in town for the Rolling Stones concert. It was a great experience. The hotel was very cool. We loved the decor and the great vibe we got the moment we walked into the lobby. The staff was very courteous and very helpful. There is some loud construction going on next the hotel, but fortunately, our room was on the north side of the hotel and the construction is taking place on the south side. The only negative thing about our stay was the ice machine on our floor did not work. Not a big deal at all. We will definitely stay there again.

This hotel gave me the blues

by TripAdvisor Member wefstag

The hotel is well located but is generally dark with a lack of amenities for guests. When there is a function the public bar gets very crowded.

Most of the staff were fine, but not the receptionist. We pointed out there were incorrect charges on the bill which rather than apologise for she agued the case. eg a parking charge when we had no car.

At our latest trip to Chicago we stayed at the Renaisance, which was worth the extra cost.

HOB Lobby Bar has comfy chairs, music - perfect...

by TripAdvisor Member FiveNickNine

Actually I have not stayed at the House of Blues Hotel, but I visit the lobby bar every time I am in Chicago.... what a nice environment. Comfy chairs and couches in a Mediteranean? decor with some great live music most nights... I have introduced several friends for after work and late night drinks and they love it also. Don't miss it if you are tired of loud music and metal or wood chairs.... The seating is great for close conversation without having to talk across a table....

We stayed 2 nights on the house of blues hotel in Chicago, and it was very good! Friendly staff, lovely interior, perfect location, and close to all the sights in chicago, and right next to all the stores on michigan avenue.. There was also a very good blues concert next to the lobby one night.. A bit expensive hotelbar but all in all a very good hotel that was just perfect for our visit to chicago.

Chicago has a wide selection of wine bars. If you are staying downtown, the closest one to you will be Cru which is in the Gold Coast on Delaware. There is also Bin 36 which is attached to the Sax Hotel next to the House of Blues. Cru will be more intimate. Bin 36 has its own wine shop. My favorite wine bar in Chicago is Webster's Wine bar. I got engaged here. It is a cozy house with couches and little tables. It is on Webster across from the Webster theatre. We also go to DOC which is next to Dunlay's on Clark on Clark Street at Wrightwood.

Is Websters Wine Bar reachable by the El ?

Re: Wine Bar in Chicago?

by TRimer

You could take the EL but there would be a walk from an EL Stop. You could take the Red line to North and Clybourn and walk to Webster (the bar is just west of Clybourn). It is a little over a mile away.
