Convenient - small
Inn of Chicago is half a block of the southern end of Northern Michigan - near stores, busses, convenient to the trains. Very easy to get to major sights, and not at all difficult to get anywhere. Bathroom was tiny, and there's not much room to store clothes for a longer stay. Very utilitarian. Looks as if a makeover was done some years ago but is now looking worn ( our TP holder was broken). Service - OK - maids didn't always clean, leave more coffee, kleenex ---
Amenities - limited- coffeeshop off lobby, and small bar. Not a "destination" but it works well for sightseeingwalking was enough. Never checked the exercise facilities....
Price seemed steep for the hotel quality, but average for the location (and we made arrangements fairly close to travel).
Unique Quality: Location.

Be wary
From the looks of the website, this looks like a very cute "boutique hotel". The lobby fits the image protrayed online, but be wary. There are only a few rooms on the lower level "executive rooms" that actually look like the ones they show online. The rest range from grimy shoe box to large and very outdated. For $98 a night like one reviewer stated they paid - I think it's a great deal. I think the max I'd pay for an exec room is $150 and I travel A LOT. In NYC, this room MAY go for $200, but that's pushing it - and I am speaking of the exec room. I am not sure which level ends the exec level, but just be specific about what you're booking.
Unique Quality: The website is the best part about this hotel.
Opinion of Price: more expensive than average

The Best Western Inn of...
The Best Western Inn of Chicago is a wonderful hotel about a 1/2 block down from Michigan Ave. (within walking distance to Starbucks, Eddie Bauer, Gap, and all the other wonderful shops on the Magnificent Mile) It has great prices (smaller rooms, but VERY comfortable) and a wonderful restaurant attached. The staff is also very terrific (very friendly, even on the big holiday shopping weekends). I would suggest looking into this hotel if you are planning a weekend in Chicago. Price ranges between $98 USD and goes up from there.
Great location right off Michigan Ave. The price was great. We booked directly with the hotel. The el-train was about two blocks away. It was a short enough distance that we walked with our luggage to the hotel. The room was small but clean and neat. Our friends were booked next door. Everything was just as I expected. The restaurant directly across the street is not just a greasy-spoon. It was a delicious place and decorated very tastefully; it was a place where the locals go. We ate breakfast there on Sunday morning. The food was served to us quickly, by a friendly and efficient waitress.
Couldn't ask for a better location.

We stayed here for 6 nights at the beginning of July. When we arrived the lady at reception was a little concerned that the room we had booked was too small for us for 6 nights so she upgraded us with no extra charge! The room was clean and spacious but the bathroom was very small. Staff were usually happy to help and we were able to book discounted boat and trolley tours through the hotel. The hotel is in a perfect location for tourists- everything you need very close at hand. Only negative point- the air conditioner was a little too loud.

I can't believe others are rating this dump favorably! I had to remove the toilet paper roll to sit down, it was the smallest hotel bathroom I have ever seen in my life. The AC was loud and inneffective. The elevators tiny and slow (I ended up just walking down 12 flights of stairs rather than waiting for another full elevator). The ***** hairs in the bathtub from a previous guest just set the tone for my 3 day stay. Never again, I'll tell my agent to put me up under a bridge rather than the BW Chicago.
Great Service!

We stayed here for three nights in August. What a relief! Everyone was sooooo friendly and helpful and never seemed bothered by answering the same "tourist" questions over and over again. It is in a great location and the price cannot be beat. By the way...Garretts popcorn on Michigan Ave. was the only place we found where the staff was so rude to the point of being ugly to it's patrons. Don't go. There are other popcorn stands in town where they appreciate their customers and the popcorn is just as good if not better.
Great Service & Great Deal

Booked with an online discounter for a great rate. I was worried we'd get a basement room by the boiler, but we got a corner room on 12. It was a pretty large room (larger than most on the floor from the map by the elevator). Yes, the bathroom is a little small, but we go to a lot of bed & breakfast homes & we've travelled a lot in Europe, so believe me, I have seen bathrooms WAY smaller than this. It is an older hotel so the lobby is small, the elevators are way small, but the location is so close & convenient to so many things. Close to the free trolley & bus stop as well. Can't imagine a more central location. The staff was incredible. They told us what busses to catch, they called the museum for us to get the Labor Day hours (different than what is published). They arranged transport to the airport for us, came outside to make sure we were getting the right cab, loaded our luggage into the cab & refused to take a tip. We checked out at 11am & our flight didn't leave until 9pm. They held our luggage for us all day & again refused a tip. The rooms have been updated in the last few years & we found them very clean & tastefully decorated. Beds were comfy enough - I usually have a hard time sleeping in hotel beds but I slept like the dead. A/C was blocked by the curtains, so I had to prop something against the curtains to keep them from billowing & blocking the cool air. Rooftop deck was OK - nice view. One thing we liked - since there was no pool, seems there were also no kids. We're child-free, so it was nice not to have kids running around all over the halls & lobby. This is by no means a luxury hotel, but it's certainly no TravelLodge either. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
Fantastic location

The location really was superb. Just steps away from the Magnificent Mile, and handy for everything we wanted to see and do. The room was comfortable and perfectly fine for our needs. We were two friends sharing, and were glad to be offered the chance of a larger room if we waited a little to check in - didn't see what the original one would have been like, but we had a corner room which presumably gave us more space. Two things worth mentioning: I'd read complaints about the slow elevators and lack of fitted sheets on this site and thought people really did go over the top when pointing out faults. That is until I had to wait a full 10 minutes for an elevator, and my sheet practically came off my bed in the night as it was just too small and didn't fit properly. However, neither would put me off staying at this hotel! The Newsmakers restaurant/cafe was, in our experience, fine for a quick breakfast or lunch (although it shut, weirdly, at 2pm). The bar wasn't great, but then there are so many more exciting places to go than your hotel bar when you're in the heart of downtown Chicago. The concierge staff were most helpful with looking after left luggage, ordering taxis etc. I would definitely come here again.

"Our first Chicago Trip"
We took our 2 sons to Chicago in Aug. and stayed at the Hampton on W Illinois. This location is perfect for getting around. Close to the subway and bus. Near Magnificent Mile. Great breakfast buffet. We stayed in a regular room w/ 2 beds - very comfortable!!! Our boys wanted to bring the beds home. We drove and are not sure where they kept our van - but it came back to us fine. The concierge will try to sell you the 3 day pass on the trolley, but you will do better to get the one day pass and then go to the corner grocery and get a bus/el pass. Recommend a minimum of 3 nights. We also rode the train to see Blue Man Group, who we had seen in Las Vegas 10 yrs. ago. Our kids loved it, and we all had a great time. FYI- Don't bother going out of Chicago to the "LegoLand" The store on Mag. Mile is just as wonderful - and there is no charge to go in and play. We will definitely go back to Chicago! Very Friendly City!!

Holiday Inn CHICAGO-DOWNERS GROVE
by NGCH2
Hi .. need help here. I'll be staying in this hotel. Is it at a convenient location? I do not drive and hence will need to depend on trains

Are you attending a convention of some sort in Downers Grove? If not, I'd suggest trying to get a hotel in the city center instead of going to and from the suburb of Downers Grove which is not terribly convenient.
If price is a concern, you might give Priceline or Hotwire a shot, they are totally non refundable and non cancellable but you'll get a much better hotel for a more reasonable price. Check www.betterbidding.com or www.biddingfortravel.com before bidding.
