Downtown Bars

by Jandar

We will be in Chicago for a few days in October and would like some recommendations for bars. we'd like quiet, not a pick-up bar, maybe soft blues or Jazz playing, nice view, nice outside patio (if it's still warm enough) for a few suggestions of what we'd like in a bar.
Thanks,
jandar

Jazz at the Shedd only runs through September 1st so unfortunately that will not work for an October visit. I'm not much of a bar person but here are a couple of sites that might be helpful to you

Hotel bars can be a good option downtown. "The Wit" hotel has a nice outdoor rooftop bar with good views of State Street and the Loop. It's at the corner of State Street and Lake.

I like to meet friends at the "old school" cocktail lounge at the Drake Hotel. The lounge is called the "Coq d'Or" - and the Drake is in an "Art Deco" landmark at the northern end of Michigan Avenue, close to the John Hancock Bldg. and the Bloomingdale's mall.

There are some really great jazz and blues bars in Chicago. Love Chicago! They have quite a tradition of great blues and jazz clubs, most any bar in Chicago has an outside option, but unless it's warm out they may not have the porch open. But most any of these bars are exquisite.

I hope you have a great time in Chicago, it's a gorgeous, friendly, excellent city

I would try out Pops For Champagne.

I have not been to Pops since it moved its location from Lincoln Park but I loved going there in the past. http://www.popsforchampagne.com/ They have live jazz bands and have an outside patio.

Travel Tips for Chicago

Goose Island Honkeys Ale.

by Bela_LUng

This beer taste great. I like it, so I drank a lot of it while in Chicago. I recommend you do the same. It's a fruity tart local brew and goes down well. It's available at a lot of places around Chicago.

DRINK BEER! :) Getting really drunk in a small pub in my Hotel.

If the world were fair,...

by CubsIn4

If the world were fair, everyone would get to see a game at Wrigley Field during their lifetime. Although I have a built-in bias towards all things Cubs, I think many a baseball fan will tell you that a trip to Chicago would not be complete without taking in a game at Wrigley. Even if you don't particularly like baseball, you should spend an afternoon at the ball park not just to see a game but to explore this colorful neighborhood as well. From what I just said above, would it surprise anyone to know that Wrigley Field is one of my favorite places on planet Earth?

The Famous Field Museum

by Radiomom

I remember taking "field trips" to the Field Museum as a kid and never catching on to the fact that it was named for the same family that founded Marshall Fields (the department store) and the museum major benefactor.

In 2002 I enjoyed a trip to see a special exhibit on Pearls. But I'll always remember this elephant in the main hall...

Frank Lloyd Wright

by Pawtuxet

Take the time to venture away from the city to tour the old neighborhood of Frank Lloyd Wright, the architect....and see the first home he built for his family. It's a wonderful tour....short train ride. You can do it all in an afternoon.
This home was done by Wright for a neighbor. Must be one of his early works...with tudor influence. Anyone know or remember more about it?See t'logue for more

The Santa Fe [Railway Exchange] Building

by shrimp56

You will find this historic early skyscraper at 224 S. Michigan Ave. just opposite the Chicago Art Insitute. It was designed & built by DH Burnham & Co in 1904 , and is covered in white glazed terracotta tiles.
.
Despite the decorative tile "skin", it is one of the early steel frame/concrete pier buildings that were the early skyscrapers. It is graced by a 2 story atrium for its lobby, which the Chicago Architecture Foundation uses for its exhibits.
