Construction still?

by Jandar

Hi all,
We'll be in Chicago next week and I was wondering if there is still alot of construction at State & Grand. I noticed there was on google earth but i don't know if that is still going on.
Thanks,
Jan

When I was there about 6 weeks ago, there was construction, but I can't speak for now.

If you are viewing the satellite images on google Earth, please note that there is a delay sometimes up to 4 months before those images are posted.

I assume you are asking because you are staying at a hotel on State & Grand, maybe the Hilton Garden Inn? If you look at the reviews on Trip Advisor none of the recent ones mention construction and they usually do if there is construction or if it effects people's stays at a particular hotel.

The City of Chicago's website mentions the construction as it pertains to the renovation of the CTA station, it says that there are lane reductions through late 2011, it is still construction season

Click on the "Grand/State project flier--fall 2010 to late 2011" link on the website above to get an overview of the project

Thanks I'll check it out further. I don't really mind.

I don't know for sure but it appears that the construction has been completed. you can check this site for comments about "construction". The last comments was October of 2009.

You can actually search all the reviews about a hotel for a specific word.

I know that when I was there in August of 2010, construction was still on going, but did not cause too much problem.

Travel Tips for Chicago

Chicago's Picasso

by SLLiew

Took a train to downtown Chicago from O'Hare Airport.

It was winter and snow falling. Stood this impressive outdoor sculpture that looked at first like a "baboon" to me. It was a bold statement. Had read about this work of art and so it was nice to see in real life.

Art does do wonder to urban cities that is sprawling with traffice and crowded high rises. So check out this 50 feet high metallic 3D Picasso at Daley's Square.

I froze my butt off here in Sept.

Bring warm layered clothing in the Fall and Winter months. This wind goes right thru your body. It is freezing! Going to the top of the tower and having a few drinks looking over the city was pretty romantic at night.

Do a Bar Crawl. Chicago has some of the greatest bars in the country with a history of speakeasy's and gangsters. Hit the Bongo Bar for an interesting evening of playing bongos and drinking. You're really part of the show. The House of Blues Hotel is a fun place to stay and is pretty centrally located. If you are a sports fan, check out the ESPNzone for an action packed day.

Ethnic Neighborhoods: Swedish

by dlandt

Located at Foster and Clark, Andersonville is an old Swedish, new Persian and reputably lesbian neighborhood. There isn't a whole lot of Swedish stuff left here, a few churches, a bakery, a Swedish-American museum and one or two gift shops. Nevertheless its worth a look. Make sure you see my restaurant tip on Tre Kroner if you want Swedish food.

I'm not too familiar with the Persian and Turkish cuisines or customs, I just know that there are quite a few of these shops and resturants here.

The neighborhood is supposed to be the lesbian area of Chicago, though I would have absolutely no idea where to recommend. Midsommarfest here is a real drag. If you go there be prepared to eat Greek and Vietnamese food, have people try and sell you cell phone service or get you to refinance your home. There is nothing Swedish or Scandinavian about it.

Chicago Tip

by marzz3

See Tony & Tina's Wedding! It was sooooo funny! It's a dinner/theater type thing, but VERY interactive! It's a little pricey, but good for an evening of entainment. Located at Piper's Alley, 230 W. North.
