where to go for Halloween

by ken&lynette

We are from Michigan, we are coming to Chicago for Halloween weekend. We will be staying at Sheraton Hotel and Towers downtown, could you tell me where some Halloween party's are? A little about us: This will be our 1st time visiting Chicago. There are four adults in our mid 40's, like country, classic rock, Top 40 (hip hop, pop), and not into Rap.
We would like to find a good night club or bar that is with-in walking distance from our holtel. As long as it was a good place, we will be walking most places and use a Taxi as little as possible.
I've looked on the internet and have not found much. The only site I found was the Chicago scene, there were two party's on this site. Any help would be Appreciated!

Thank you,
Ken & Lynette

I'll let the party experts from Chicago answer this one, but if it's cold and that wind is whipping across the lake you may be taking a taxi, just saying

Re: where to go for Halloween

I'm afraid I'm not a party expert and it's been quite a few years since I've done anything but go to private parties for Halloween. It might be a week or two early to find listings for Halloween but I would check one of the following sources when it gets slightly closer and there should be tons of listings for Halloween related events. Metromix is affiliated with the Chicago Tribune, Time Out is a weekly publication that you can also buy at bookstores and the Chicago Reader is a free publication that you can pick up around the city.

There are also some ideas here on other sorts of things, bear in mind that the
article looks to be a couple of years old

http://chicago.about.com/od/artsculture/a/Halloween.htm

You can sign up for email from both TimeOut and Metromix and be notified once
the Halloween info is posted. If you want to stay close to the hotel, looks for
places in River North, Streeterville, Gold Coast and Magnificent Mile, just be
aware that it will be mostly tourists and not locals, not that there's anything wrong with that. Not much happens after dark in the Loop (business district).

One Halloween thing you might check out is Daley Plaza where they have Chicagoween, there are performances of the Midnight Circus, some food booths and
they dye the fountain orange for Halloween. I wouldn't say it was an absolute
must but if you are over that way, near the State Street shopping area, it's worth checking out.

Travel Tips for Chicago

Crowds in Michigan Ave

by Martman

Chicago is the 3rd largest city in USA. Needless to say, it is not a tiny village! I enjoyed Michigan Avenue, the main street, filled with huge crowds of people. I took these pictures to show how busy the area is. I enjoyed seeing so many people!

Chicago Tip

by maxzmillion

My friends and I had been traveling through the city all day. Exhausted, we needed to find a place worthy of resting. I was astonished to find a small courtyard in the middle of it all. It was a cathedral in the middle of the city.

You must see the Sears Tower, I loved it. You have an amazing view of about 4 states on a clear day I miss my friends that I went to visit. They are so nice. They were very good to me whilst I stayed with them. I also miss the great Thai restaurant they took me too :)

Reading list

by Dabs

Besides the essential guide book reading, here are a few other reading ideas before heading to Chicago

Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, a very well written non fictional account of a serial killer interwined with the story of Daniel Burnham and the 1893 Columbian Exposition

If you are a fan of architecture and want to do some self guided touring, there's a comprehensive book called Chicago in and Around the Loop: Walking Tours of Architecture and History by Gerald Wolfe that you might find interesting. It's a little dated having been published in 1996 but I found some very interesting information in there.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, follows a Lithuanian immigrant and his family seeking the American dream in Chicago. Sinclair, a socialist, wrote it an indictment of the wealthy capitalists who ran the meat packing plants in Chicago but what really caught the public's interest was the poor pigs and cows sent off to slaughter in inhumane conditions, it led to reforms in the meat packing industry and ultimately the founding of the Food and Drug Administration.

Sin in the Second City by Karen Abbott is a enjoyable non fictional account of the salacious side of Chicago around the turn of the century featuring the Everleigh sisters and their famous brothel in the Levee district, the notorious criminals and the politicians that they greased to keep the Levee district alive and hopping and the religious men and lawmen who finally brought an end to it.

Still on my to read list-"City of the Century, The Epic of Chicago and the Making of America" by Donald L. Miller, comes highly recommended by my husband

FIELD MUSEUM. More than 6...

by ainhoaflies

FIELD MUSEUM. More than 6 acres of exhibits fill this gigantic museum, which explores cultures and environments around the world, from the secrets of Egyptian mummies, to the peoples of Africa and the Pacific Northwest. As part of Inside Ancient Egypt, the remarkable Mastaba complex includes a working canal, a living marsh, a shrine, and 23 mummies. Don't miss the Life over Time: DNA to Dinosaurs exhibit, which traces the evolution of life on Earth from one-celled organisms to the great reptiles.
