More about The Willows Hotel

Check out Devon Avenue for...

by Rentmyroom

Check out Devon Avenue for great Indian Food! It's located on the northern most part of Chicago. Excellent shopping too for all sorts of cool stuff from Mexican Style Baja Shirts ($7) Mexican Blankets ($5), Indonesian tapestries ($10). You save like 300% on the touristy or 'boutique shops.'

Also try shopping at Del Rey Markets (sign has a big tomotoe). Pick up Poland Spring Water for about $3 a 12 pack! That like the cheapest in the world! Locations are one near the Kimball/Belmont Blue Line Stop and also Foster/Broadway in Edgewater.

Want cheap eats? Try all the little restaurants in Wrigleyville (Near Belmont/Sheffield) My favorites are Penny's Noodles on Sheffield about 4 blocks from Wrigley Field. Mamacita's Mexican on Broadway just north of Belmont. Theire Salsa is drinkable!
Joy's Noodles is also a cheap delight across the street.

Want a power boost? Try Jamba Juice on the corner of Diversey and Clark near the Willows Hotel. Oh yeah! And you have to try 'La Baquette' Mexican Diner and Bakery also near the Willows Hotel. Damn it's good!

Try Melrose Diner Just north of Belmont/Broadway for late night eats. Big-ass plate of homefries for $2.75!!!

Best Chicago coffee: Intelligentsia!! Also on Broadway just south of Belmont.

Try Chipotle for burritos bigger then your head! Great to meal for 2 and you pay about $5.00!!

What is on the ground floor at the Hancock building?

by Jayne60

We will be taking a tour in November that stops there and you get to go to the observation level, but one person in our group is going to stay on the ground. Is there a coffee shop or something?

There is the Garden Plaza that has L'Apperitto, a italian bakery/cafe serves b/l/d. and coffee...they also have the Jamba juice and Cheesecake factory. There are many other shops and the surrounding area has plenty of retail shops around. Cheers Tommy x

If they don't like the options in the Hancock, you are right in the middle of tourist central, Water Tower Place is next door which is a vertical shopping mall, if they are looking to get something to eat there's a "food court" called Food Life at Water Tower Place, there's also Wow Bao on the ground floor is they want to grab a snack (no seating though) or plenty of shopping.

One more block further than Water Tower is the Pumping Station which has a tourism office in it and a place to grab a snack or across the street there is a Border's book store which will have a coffee shop or they can browse for books, they have a good selection of Chicago related books at that one. If they have a sweet tooth there is a Ghiradelli chocolate shop and a Hershey's store all within a couple of blocks.

Travel Tips for Chicago

The Windy City

by TRimer

Most people (even native Chicagoans) believe that Chicago is the "windy city" b/c of the weather. This is not true, in fact we do not have very strong winds. The real reason we are called that has to do with politics.

It seems that during the bidding for the World's Fair of 1893, Chicago proponents put on a rather verbose presentation and campaign to win the bid. The choice was down to Chicago, New York, Washington and St. Louis, and the competition before Congress among the cities was fierce. The New York Sun editor Charles Dana wrote: "Don't pay attention to the nonsensical claims of that windy city. Its people could not build a world"s fair even if they won it." The newspapers began calling Chicago the Windy City thereafter and the nickname stuck.

Chicago's lake front is...

by ljbs

Chicago's lake front is unique--about 15 miles of park land and beaches. No other Great Lakes city has anything like it.
Guide books will tell you about the museums, sights, cultural and sporting events, but they don't tell you to visit Lake Michigan. In summer people who don't require the heated water of pools can enjoy swimming in it; summer temperatures range from 60F to 75F (some hardy Chicagoans swim all year--I
quit at around 50F in November. But at any temperature it's beautiful and always changing.

Old saved by New...

I pointed out the beautiful Carbide and Carbon Building to Allan. This building with its polished black granite and marble base is 40 stories high and uses glazed green terra cotta. It's topped with a gold Art Deco leaf-trimmed tower that is illuminated at night.

The Carbide and Carbon Building was completed in 1929, and it resembles a champagne bottle. In 2004, it was renovated and became the Hard Rock Hotel. Allan and wanted to see what it looked like inside so we casually walked inside as though we were staying there. Once inside, we sat down on the comfortable modern couches and observed. The interior is quite modern and follows what one would expect of the Hard Rock Franchise.

The Hotel is located at 230 North Michigan Avenue and attracts a much younger crowd. I'm so pleased that this lovely old building and its grand architecture was really saved by the "hip" Hard Rock Hotel.

Photographs:

#1 I took this photo of the outside of the Carbide & Carbon Building very up close and from the bottom up at a slight angle.

#2 This photo was taken inside the Hard Rock Hotel. As we walked in, we turned to the right and made ourselves comfortable at this small bar/seating area.

Allan thanked me for giving him the "scoop" on this Carbide and Carbon Building, which has become The Hard Rock Hotel.

Get your kicks on...Adams Street?

by spgood301

You betcha! This is the very beginning of the famous Route 66, on Adams Street off Michigan Avenue right in downtown Chicago. Route 66 is legendary in stories & song - maybe America's most famous road. Stay on it all the way, and it'll take you right to California.

Which is good, because the Blue Line doesn't stop in Santa Monica :-)
