Danville Dans baseball
Due to wartime travel restrictions (still in place even after VE and VJ day) the Brooklyn Dodgers called Danville, Illinois and Danville Stadium its spring training home in 1946 and '47. It was here that the great Jackie Robinson made one of his first appearances in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform.
Today the facility is used by the Danville Dans of the Central Illinois Collegiate League, a summer wooden bat league for the best college ball players of the Midwest. They play a 60 game season from June to July.
The wood-steel-rust stadium appears to have changed very little in the past 60 years. Purists like me find this heaven, others will simply find the place a little too grotty for their tastes. I'll admit, the bathrooms were in pretty nasty shape. But the experience is amazing: Three dollar entrance, two dollar beers and friendly volunteers who truly care about the place and the players. Grab a seat in the old wooden bench section and cheer on the youngster, who play a pretty competetive game.
