Travel Tips for Freeport

The Parks are Nice

by zrim

Freeport has its problems as part of the rust belt. Old factories shut down or slow production and new businesses don't seem to fill the void. Real estate prices are depressed and it is my impression that jobs are not plentiful. However, the city has always had very nice parks. A place to get away from the stresses of life for a little while.

Churches and Taverns

by zrim

Almost every street corner in the older part of town has a tavern and almost every block in the same parts of town has a church.

Church on Sunday morning and a drink after work all week long.

Lots of people of German heritage in this part of Illinois. They like their beer and they like their churches.

Downtown

by zrim

All commerce has moved to the outskirts of town leaving the center of town somehwat rundown.

I guess K-marts, Wal-marts and fast food are what people want, but it seems a shame that the historic centers of our towns and cities often turn into ghost towns.

Factories (2)

by zrim

The companies that were operating when I grew up were called: Micro Switch, Kelly Springfield Tire, Furst-McNess, Rawleigh, Newell, Structo, Burgess Battery and I am sure there were several others I don't remember.

Freeport - Small Town America

by MatthewMetcalfe

I have family that live in Freeport so I made a visit to see them. I've never been up there before and it was quite interesting.

The town is old (Lincoln and Douglas Debated here) and retains much of it's charm.

The houses are awesome each with large lots and tons of character. This is in contrast to Atlanta where they are all designed to look the same and occupy 15 sqaure feet of land together.

Great Parks also make this a wonderful town to visit. It's located in the Corn Belt and you will see tons of Corn and Soybeans growing.

Freeport is located about 20 Miles south of Monroe, Wisconsin. It's a great starting point for a cheese tour.
