Boutiquing

Boutiquing is what you really do in Galena when you aren't horseback riding etc. The whole town is filled with boutiques and the main picture here shows only one, the teddy bear store. Great place! If you can see in the second picture, just try and imagine each and every storefront being a specialty store of some kind, featuring cute household items, gourmet ice cream, specialty foods, and other things. One chocolaterie even had chocolates imported from Venezuela. A picnic in Grant Park

Shenandoah Riding Center

Too bad I'm so allergic to horses!

Right down the road from our Time Share was the Shenandoah Riding Center, which is operated by Leathy Sporthorses, Inc.

Those who ride horses all agree that the trails in the Galena Territory are picturesque and quite lovely. The rides include open meadows, gently sloping hills, small streams, and old Oak woods.

You might be able to see all kinds of wildlife such as wild turkey and deer.

There are several trail rides you can choose:

THE TERRITORY TRAIL IS THE LONGEST. It is five hours of trail riding with a picnic lunch break. It includes deep ravines and rugged hills.

THE CANTER RIDE is two hours in the Galena Territory where you can trot and canter.

THE SHENANDOAH TRAIL RIDE IS THE MOST RELAXING RIDE through wooded hills and green valleys.

FIRST TIME HORSEBACK RIDE USES A LEAD LINE FOR FIRST TIME RIDERS AND CHILDREN.

They also offer lessons at $65.00 per hour. Must be 10 years old. "Suitable attire for trail riding is jeans or pants that are comfortable and boots with a heel or athletic shoes."

Old cobblestone street

The exposed stones on this old cobblestone street probably date back to the early 1830 (the stockcade on the left dates from 1832.) Walking around town must have been quite a chore in those days and don't count on walking the old road today, it's railed off.

"Galena scooter tour of winery"

Be sure to inquire about the specifics of the scooter tour of the winery. We booked the scooter tour which was advertised to include a scooter ride to the winery, the tour and tasting and a shuttle back to town, all for $65. This sounded like a great deal. The reality was not so pleasant. What we got was a 45 minute ride to the winery and a $5 gift card to use at the winery. The tour of the winery cost $5. Basically we paid $60 to ride a scooter for 45 minutes and then to have them take us the 12 miles back to town in a truck.

Galena Cellars is an interesting winery with friendly staff and great wine. I would recommend driving yourself out there and back unless you are really anxious to ride a scooter.
