Travel Tips for Macomb

Macomb, Illinois

by deecat

Would you believe that when Macomb was first settled [1829], it was named "Washington", but when the town was founded a year late as the county seat of McDonough County, it was named after General Alexander Macomb; thus, the name Macomb!
General Macomb was a general in the War of 1812. Congress of the United States awarded war veterans land grants in and arounnd Macomb [part of the "Military Tract".

What really put Macomb "on the map", so to speak, was when a state financed highway [Route 3] was constructed from Cairo, Illinois to Rock Island Illinois and went through Macomb! By the late 1920s, U. S. Route 67 was extended along Route 3 to Dubuque, Iowa.

At one time [1855, a railroad that became the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad went through Macomb.

Today the population of Macomb is about 40,000. It was in 1899 that the Western Illinois State Normal School [now called Western Illinois University] was founded in Macomb. The Main Building was erected and later it was called Sherman Building after Representative Lawrence Sherman who was the main force behind locating the university in the town of Macomb.

Everywhere but on the campus of the university, we noted predominately Caucasion population. I looked it up and discovered that Macomb is
93% Caucasion
3% African American
2% Hispanic
2% Asian

Allan and I thought the town was quite attractive, especially the Courthouse Square.j

"Sleepy little town"

Macomb is known as the county seat and home of Western Illinois University. That is really about all there is here. Lots of late night college partying in the streets quite often in the spring and summer. There is a very good Summer Musical Theatre Season at the University, also a strong academic season of productions. Heritage Days in the summer has the strong local flavor and Thursday morning summer market on the square brings the local produce to town. Love it.
