Travel Tips for Naperville

Oswald's Pharmacy

by shrimp56

Oswald's Pharmacy has been a fixture in downtown Naperville for over 125 years. Alas it is now moving to another shopping plaza south of the city center. The reason? The downtown revitalization as a shopping/dining mecca has meant that the kind of in&out parking people picking up prescriptions want is no longer available.

A hidden fountain

by shrimp56

You will find this sculpture/fountain next to The Promenade cafe. It is titled "Symbiotic Sojourn" and is supposed to represent the recycling of waste materials and the risk to the earth if we don't. A bit heavy handed as civic sculpture!!!

For That Special Occasion

by riorich55 about Allgauer's

Allgauer's is celebrating it's 25th year and for any restaurant to hang around that long you know it has to be good. Sue and I usually make it here at least once a year and the last couple of times we have come for a special occasion. The latest event was coming on a Friday night for our anniversary. Besides being relatively close to home (only 6 miles) the food is always very good, the staff very attentive and friendly and the price with our usual $20 to $25 off coupon available locally can't be beat.

This was the first time we had been there on a Friday night and although we didn't partake in the Friday night seafood and prime rib buffet that looked delicious. Instead we had a seafood and meat dish which we swapped halfway through our meal. Sue started with a pan seared grouper which was in a scallop soup with fresh vegetables. I had the grilled beef tenderloin medallinos with a potato mushroom gratin smothered in a cabernet blue cheese butter. Both meal came with a choice of soup or salad.

It was interesting to note that the menu now also includes a 1/2 meal for just a little over 1/2 the price of a full meal. So if you have a smaller appetite you can still get the same wonderful food for the smaller price.

They also have a great Sunday buffet which we indulged in last year when we invited our close relatives for a college graduation celebration for our twins last year.

They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner as they are located in the Lisle Hilton Hotel. Hours are 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. This time around it had to be the dessert. Sue and I shared the Chocolate Truffle Pie with Cappuccino-Nut Ice Cream in a Raspberry Sauce. First of all the presentation of the dessert was great with the ice cream sitting atop the circular truffle pie and surrounded by various in season fruits and the raspberry sauce.

And then we had our first taste of the pie and the warm chocolate truffle just melted in our mouths with a rich chocolaty taste that was second to none. Add to that the delicious butter rich ice cream, the raspberry sauce and the fruits and it was the perfect way to top off our delicious meal.

Moser Tower and Millenium Carillon

by riorich55

Since, I was putting in another nomination for sexy buildings or the like, I figured I'd stay close to home with my 2nd nomination. Doing a little research on line I was surprised that the Carillon has now been in Naperville for 10 years. It seems really like yesterday when they were constructing it and trying to raise enough money for its completion.

Over the years we've heard one or two of the concerts and periodically they will have special events at the foot of the Carillon (like hosting Gold Medal Olympic Champion and 2nd Place Dancing with the Stars hometown boy Evan Lysacek.

Last summer, I took off on a Friday to do a photo walkaround of Naperville and even took a personal tour of the Carillon. You can either walk up or ride. I decided on the walk.

Oh by the way. If anyone asks and likes to play trivia, ask them which is taller the Statue of Liberty or the Moser Tower in Naperville. Look at the website for a comparison.

Anyway, hopefully this will spark me to write more about my hometown and show off not only the Moser Tower, but also other great pictures from our community.
