There are always parades going on in downtown Naperville. The latest one was the St Patrick's Day Parade which is probably the largest one in the Western Suburbs. Here are some pictures from 2008's Parade. I've lived here almost 30 years and have seen the city grow from 40,000 people to 140,000. The downtown is incredibly vibrant with all the shopping, restaurants, and site seeing you could easily spend a couple of days here and not see everything.
I have taken several of the Self-Guided Historic Walking Tours that were put together by the Naperville Hertiage Society and Naper Settlement. The walking tours are interesting, have some great local sites and some really cool facts. This is a free activity and you can pick up a copy of one or three of the walking tour pamphlets from the Naper Settlement Library or you could download your own copy. Though the walks might be a little long for some children you can stop and start wherever you want, though the information is short and great for most adults. You might consider doing a little more background on general history to help your little ones get more excitied about the architecture, or life in the midwest. I would tie the downtown walking tour with a trip to Naper Settlement to help the children visual and interact with the local history.
Competition from the Chicago big guns who have opened outposts in Naperville killed this wonderful restaurant. I will remember our meals here with pleasure.

This same small house on a small street in downtown Naperville has gone through several transformations in the past few years. After a long run as Sweet Basil's it morphed into David's, then into Elaine's.

Under all three names the food was good, but not outstanding. Now the same owner that opened Elaine's has opened 10 West [the address] with a considerably better menu. I had the corvina [a white fish] which was presented with a medley of southwestern flavors that worked together nicely.

We ate here for an early New Year's celebration. Pictures of our delicious meal are posted on this tip. Dishes are from the Winter 2005 menu.
On a Saturday morning this is a Naperville institution for long-time residents and their families who love their 3 egg omlettes and big Belgian waffles with sides of bacon or sausage. The Belgian malt waffle [pictured], with a dusting of sugar, warm maple syrup and a side of bacon. It's heaven on a plate!
The Martin Mitchell Mansion is the only original building on the grounds of the Naper Settlement -- a "living history village" started in 1969 in order to preserve the area's history. The many buildings are staffed by costumed interpreters. Hour vary according to the season so check before you go!
