Travel Tips for Springfield

You must visit the Lincoln...

by CoachB

You must visit the Lincoln sites. There is something special about knowing that your feet are walking in the very place where our 16th President walked over 150 years ago. We love the 4th of July celebration at the Old State Capitol building (6th St.) There are people dressed in costumes from the 1800's. There is usually a petting zoo and many activities for the kids (magic shows, singers, maypole dancing, crafts. We even got our picture taken with Abe Lincoln!

famous food dish

by hippoguy

The Horseshoe sandwich.
Two slices of bread (white preferred) with two burgers, covered with french fries and smothered with "special cheese sauce" is the original Springfield created food. It has evolved to have the burgers replaced by a variety of foods including bacon and eggs, turkey, chicken, chilli, pork tenderloin or almost any meat available to the restaurant. There are at least 5 places noted to be the original creator but in truth nobody really knows. A pony shoe has one burger. Many restaurants carry this and the quality varies depending on the sauce and generosity of the host.

Lincoln's Tomb

by cmarsek

Springfield offers an Abraham Lincoln Historic Sites bus tour that makes it very easy to find the tomb of Lincoln. The cemetary is located a simple 3 miles away from the museum, but $3 for a day pass is well worth the convenience and ease of being taken to each important site.

Sangamon County Courthouse

by zrim

One of these courthouses is not like the others. One of these courthouses just doesn't belong....

Funny story about the Sangamon County Courthouse located in Springfield: The powers that be installed a fancy metal detector at the front entrance. Everyone has to go through it whether they be criminal, lawyer, litigant or judge. Took forever. My friend had to remember to keep his switchblade back at the office. But just around the corner, there is a side door, no security, no metal detector, anyone could just breeze in and make their way to any part of the building bypassing the security detail. Of course, that was eleven years ago and this snafu may have been corrected.

Dana-Thomas House

by Dabs

Now that impeached Governor Rod Blagojevich is unemployed and busy making the talk show rounds and writing a book, the rumor is that his sucessor as governor will reopen the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Dana Thomas house that was closed to visitors due to budget cuts made in December 2008. It was not open for tours when we visited in February 2009 but we did drive by and take a couple of photos.

The Dana part of Dana-Thomas comes from Susan Lawrence Dana, a wealthy woman who was active in the arts, social services, campaigning for women's rights and for the equality of African-Americans. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Prairie style 12,000 square foot, 35 room house for her in 1902. After Susan Dana became senile and her possessions auctioned off, the house was purchased by Charles Thomas to be used as the administrative headquarters of the Charles C. Thomas Publishing Company. It was purchased by the state of Illinois in 1981.
