Travel Tips for Indianapolis

The Canal

by KaiM

Just west of downtown and east of the IUPUI university campus is the Canal. A stream of water that flows through a business district. It looks really artificial but also really nice. You can take a walk around, stop on one of the bridges, watch the ducks or go skating. Also a location where business people from the surrounding companies enjoy their lunch breaks. Unfortunately my photo of the Canal is really dark. It was almost sunset when I was there and my camera is not the best one.

Canal Walk

by sambarnett

Based after the Paseo del Rio in San Antonio, TX, Indy's canal walk is a beautiful addition to the city that serves as a popular hang out/meeting place for residents and visitors alike. Started in 1984 to rennovate the stinky 1830s canal, the neatly groomed grounds feature museums, cafes, paddleboats, ducks and some funky looking apartment buildings. The canal walk leads all the way to the White River State park, just west of downtown.

City Market

by Toughluck about City Market

www.indianapoliscitymarket.com/ Recommended: Breakfast and lunch stands have everything from Irish (stuffed potatoes) to Italian, Middle Eastern/Greek, and American cuisine. Gourmet foodstuffs are for sale as well. Also, the adjoining plaza often has live entertainment in season. Farmers Market is held each Wednesday, May-September. City Market is a must-see.

Honoring Soldiers

by KiKitC

Our hotel room had a great view of Monument Circle. The monument, dedicted to those who gave their lives in past wars, particulary the Spanish-American and Civil Wars. There is an observation tower at the top. Pay no mind to anyone that tells you there's a fee to go to the top. If you're claustorphobic, the elevator may be uncomfortable for you (especially if its full to the teeth, like when we went). But, alas, there is no other way to get to the top. From there, the views of the city are wonderful.

During the day, horse and buggy rides takes tourists, lovers and newlyweds around the circle. At night, this is a happening spot for locals.

Benjamin Harrison House

by Boozoo

The Benjamin Harrison House is on Delaware Street just north of 12th street (a couple of blocks north of the interstate bridge). Also adjoined by a small park, the house is the former residence of Pres. Benjamin Harrison and is now a museum dedicated to his life. The museums web site is where you can find exhibit info, hours, and more detailed directions. While you're there, you may want to walk around the neighborhood a bit since you just happen to be in the St. Joseph's Historical District. Believe it or not, the St. Joes neighborhood association also has their own web site too! They have a lot of great background information and you can write in for a free brochure that includes a map for walking tours.
