Indy IS a bit of a conservative town, but the people are VERY friendly overall. Wherever there's a corwd of drunks, there are always the drunkards looking to cause trouble, but all in all I have never not felt safe in Indianapolis.

Slippery Noodle!
Easy to get to, it's just south of the circle (center of downtown) off of Meridian. The Slippery Noodle is billed as Indy's oldest bar and features two blues stages. If you get bored with one, go walk to the other one (if it's not completely packed with people!). Covers vary depending on who is playing there and the quality of the bands varies. They do eventually get all the big names in the Blues genre, so keep an eye on them. All in all, I always thought it was a pretty nice place to hang out.
Two music stages... one cover charge! There is a balcony area over the back stage if I remember correctly (beer ingestion *may* have clouded my memory!). Nothing special at all...
The Corner Wine Bar
by Cabana_Boy about The Corner Wine Bar
Eventually, there will be a lot of restaurants located on my Indianapolis page, but this is my favorite restaurant for actual "dining." Remember, Uncle Phil said there are restaurants for eating and restaurants for dining.
The Corner Wine Bar accomplishes a nice balance between the two. The restaurant is quite small, almost doubling in size during the summer months when outdoor seating is available. And as the name suggests, there is an excellent wine list. The Corner Wine Bar is also attached to The Wellington, which is one of my all time favorite bars in Indy (check out my Nightlife section for the Welly). I like to try different bottles of Merlot taking suggestions form the wait staff. For food, I usually order one of their nightly specials. The menu is difficult to classify because it can have lots of items taken from different cooking styles (French, Italian, Asian, American), but everything is done up well in terms of presentation, quality and quantity.
City Market
by Toughluck
Located east of Monument Circle is the City Market. It is still the fresh produce market that it has always been. Althought, it's also become a fun place for lunch. You can browse the stalls to find fresh produce, fresh meat (cut to order), flowers, and have lunch. The market closes early but is open early.
City Market National Historic Register Site
Recommended: Breakfast and lunch stands have everything from Irish (stuffed potatoes) to Italian, Middle Eastern/Greek, and American cuisine. Gourmet foodstuffs are for sale as well.
State House Grounds - Lincoln Marker
by grkboiler
A marker on the south side of the newer government complex at the corner of Washington and Missouri commemorates the spot where Abraham Lincoln addressed the citizens of Indianapolis to assure them of his vision to preserve the Union.
The plaque reads:
"Here Feb. 11, 1861, Abraham Lincoln on his way to Washington to assume the Presidency in an address said: "I appeal to you to constantly bear in mind that not with politicians, not with presidents, not with office-seekers, but with you is the question: shall the Union and shall the liberties of this country be preserved to the latest generations?""
