Travel Tips for Indianapolis

We Regret Not Seeing.....

by deecat

Jill and I managed to "pack in" lots of touring in a short amount of time; however, we do regret not seeing the following and suggest that you try to see them:

USS Indianapolis CA35 National Monument at Walnut Avenue on the Canal Water Walk.
Note: the photo is a post card I purchased because we could not see it It is a21-ton granite memorial to commemorate the brave crew of the USS Indiana that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1945; the ship sank, killing many of its company of 1,198 instantly. 400 survived.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway The Speedway has a two-and-a-half mile oval track that encircles a large plot of land that includes a golf course and the Hall of Fame Museum (which contains many Indianapolis 500 winning cars as well as a collection of antique and classic passenger cars.) We heard that you could take a tour via bus around the track. The Indiana State Police Memorial honors Indiana State Police Heroes. This memorial was dedicted on July 2, 2002 and consists of 3 black granite tablets and an eternal flame. A "Walk of Remembrance" leads visitors to the memorial with the names of the 41 Indiana State Police personnel killed in the line of duty are inscribed on the outer tablets, while the center tablet is etched with the images of three troopers. The sound of Taps echoes on the hour from 6am-8pm

The Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial is the nation's only memorial honoring all recipients of the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest award for military valor. It was dedicated May 28, 1999, the last Memorial Day weekend of the 20th Century. It's a group of 27 curved glass walls, each between 7 and 10 feet tall. The walls represent the 15 conflicts, dating back to the Civil War. Located on the north bank of the Central Canal in White River State Park in Downtown Indianapolis, adjacent to Military Park.Note: two nights before we arrived, one of the glass partitions were SMASHED and the others were spray painted with unkind words. Needless to say, the city is furious

Healthy and Delicious!

by staindesign about 3 Sisters Café

I love this restaurant, and the great part is that even though the food is good and healthy it is fairly cheap! The restaurant is in a house in broadripple ( a cultural district in Indy). Everytime that I have eaten here i have sat on the porch of the house. They serve breakfast and lunch. And the staff is really nice, my friend Malorie works there, so you should ask for her to be your server. It isn't on the main strip of broadripple, but it is still active around there, so you can still do some great people watching. I had the grilled cheese sandwich. I loved it. You get to choose any combination of 4 or all 4. I had swiss and mozz. and for 75¢ each you can have other toppings, I had wild mushrooms and tomatos. With the meal you get a choice of 5 sides; apple sauce, rice, soup, potato salad, or chili. I had the soup and it was homemade chicken noodle, it was good, but it needed salt. My boyfriend had the grill pork tenderloin, it was also fantastic. The spices they use to flavor the meat is great! I especially like the organic coffee that they serve!

Family fun & Fast cars

by Kiisu

I spend most of my time visiting family, but places worthy to note are: 1) Indianapolis Zoo - nice, clean, spacious, and I've never seen it crowded. 1200 W. Washington. www.indyzoo.com. 2) Children's Museum - they've done a great job with this museum, with many hands-on play areas and various themed sections. 3000 N. Meridian St. www.childrensmuseum.org. 3) Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum - if you want to see a race, order your tickets very early; car nuts will enjoy the museum. 4790 W. 16th St. www.indyracing.com or www.automuseum.com. 4) Union Station and downtown has lots of places to party.

Indiana State House

by grkboiler

The State House is a beautiful building that was constructed in 1888. Many of the government offices are now offsite, but the building is still an important symbol of the state of Indiana.

The original State House was built in the Greek Revival style in 1831 and demolished in 1877. The cornerstone for the current State House was laid on September 28, 1880 and was completed in 1888. It is made of Indiana limestone and as many materials from Indiana as possible.

The shape of the building is in a Greek cross, while the exterior is in the Corinthian style. The architect was Edwin May (who died before the project was finished) and the cost was just under $2 million. The State House underwent a major facelift in 1988 to restore its original look.

The building has been the important site for many historical events in Indiana, including funerals for dignitaries, and will continue to do so in the future.

Tours are available every weekday at the north entrance. Saturday and Sunday tours are available at 10:15, 11, 12, and 1. I only had time to walk the grounds but I will take the tour next time I am in Indianapolis.

See the following tips for some more specific info on the grounds.
