Travel Tips for Indianapolis

US Grand Prix

by grkboiler

The US Grand Prix is held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway every year. It has the highest attendance of all races on the F1 circuit. The course is not as beautiful as other F1 venues, but it is historic and a great place to take in a race. After all, Indianapolis is all about racing.

The race is held every June starting in 2004 (previously September).

Tickets can be ordered online. The lowest price for a ticket is $60 for General Admission. If you want to sit in a stand, you will pay anywhere from $75-150 depending on location. Parking will cost anywhere from $20-$50. Get there early! I would say between 8 and 9 AM is good. It will be jam packed. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Food prices are expensive, so I would also pack a cooler with plenty of water and food, but check the rules for size of coolers allowed.

Buy or bring earplugs - these cars are LOUD. Also, if you are not familiar with the drivers, buy a program so you know who is who.

Mikado Japanese Restaurant

by Granger44 about Mikado Japanese Restaurant

Somewhat pricey but well worth the money.

In addition to regular dining areas, it has teppanyaki tables where the multi-course meal is prepared in front of you, as well as a sushi bar. Surprisingly it's the pork chops I order every time I dine here. Glazed with a sweet sauce, they practically melt in your mouth.

Crown Hill Cemetery

by sticki

Alright, I admit I've got a weird thing for cemeteries. But even those who get a little creeped out by them should be able to appreciate Crown Hill. It goes on for acres in the middle of the city, even housing its own heard of deer and pack (?) of foxes. The highest point in Indianapolis is the hill on which James Whitcolm Riley is burried. Get a map from the info center at the gate, cuz you will get lost. Go on a nice day, park the car by the gate, and walk. Bank robber John Dillanger and US President Benjamin Harrison are among those burried here. Bonus if you can go in fall when the leaves are turning. This is by far my favorite place in Indy.

Indiana World War Memorial

by Always7696

The war memorial was built using the pay from the soldiers from Indiana who served during World War I. The beautiful stone building depicts Indiana's involement in every American war. There is a walk in exhibit of what is like to be inside a fox hole. The greeters at the front desk can help anyone with Indiana relatives that served in a war to find the section where their name is listed. You must vist the top shrine room. All sides contain blue stain glass windows. It is wonderful room.

More Than the Indy500

by V_Minx

>>> Under Construction <<<

Most people just call it Indy, and the shortened name fits and doesn't offend anyone. Consider it a term of endearment.

This is an underappreciated gem of a Mid-Western city with a nice downtown area, some terrific museums and entertainment forums, plus a bit of a Riverwalk.

The Indy500 Motor Speedway has dominated the national scene for years, but the Colts have an impressive and entertaining Football team that can be enjoyed in the fall.

Take some time to explore this city and I think you'll find your time well spent.
