Trip of a Lifetime
Sorry, the convention was a one time deal, but the capitol building and grounds were lovely! My favorite memory would have to be watching the Star Wars movies with my kids and about 5,000 crazy obsessed people. What a blast!

What is the area and circumference of Monument Circle???
Can't tell the circumference but I can tell you that it is 284 ft. 6 in. (15 ft. shorter than the Statue of Liberty) with 32 flights of stairs with 330 steps leading to the observation deck and that on both the north and south sides, the stone steps leading to the entrance doors are 70 feet long.

The Indiana Pacers are an NBA team that joined the league in 1976. Before that, they were members of the ABA. They have a colorful history that has seen championships in the ABA and successful seasons in the NBA. The franchise's all-time greatest player is no doubt Reggie Miller, who played for the team from 1987 to his retirement in 2005.
The Pacers play at the Conseco Fieldhouse (See my Conseco Fieldhouse tip for more info). Tickets are as low as $10 and there really is no bad seat in the entire stadium.
A Pacers game is definitely a must for sports fans who visit Indianapolis during the NBA season. It is worth seeing a game just to see Conseco Fieldhouse. There are plenty of things for fans to do during the games, and it is a very family friendly atmosphere. Indiana is a basketball state, so you will be among very knowledgeable fans.
See the Pacers website for tickets and more info on the team. Parking is available all around the area, including many parking garages downtown. Conseco Fieldhouse is within walking distance from many hotels and restaurants.
Jill and I had driven from Chicago to Indianapolis, checked in to our Bed and Breakfast, toured all day. We were tired and very hungry. The Old Spaghetti Factory looked like the perfect spot. It is conveniently located; the building is historic and beautiful; the inside is filled with fine antiques: So, we assumed we would love it.
We were wrong.
We first had to wait in line; then we were seated in a very nice booth; however, it was very loud and difficult to carry on a conversation (filled with children and some pretty angry people..I know not why). The waitress was quite nice and aimed to please. The menu is extensive with platters, Classics, Chef Specials, Factory Favorites, and Desserts.
Perhaps we just did a poor job in selecting, but our meal was not good. We both ordered Chicken Caesar Salad. The problem was that the chicken was not completely cooked, and it was cut in such thick pieces. The rest of the salad with Romaine lettuce, classic Caesar dressing, shredded Romano cheese, garlic herb croutons, and Roma tomatoes was just average. It came with soup which was also average.
What was really good was the Italian Cream Sodas that we ordered. We both ordered Raspberry, and we were given our own colorful keepsake glasses.
Since we were still hungry, we ordered Mud Pie for dessert. It was pretty good with a rich chocolate cookie crust filled with Mocha Almond Fudge ice cream and topped with almonds & chocolate syrup.
It was not a good way to start our adventure.
The Eli Lilly Civil War Museum in the cramped basement of the memorial is free and worth a quick walk through. The most significant contribution to the many such museums around the nation is the unique contribution of Indiana to the conflict. While no battles were fought in Indiana, the state was a major contributor of men and material to the Union forces.
Another interesting feature of the monument is it's attraction for wedding couples. We saw five wedding parties on the pleasant Fall day that I was there. In addition, there are horse drawn carriages that cue up on the circle. I saw a horse drinking from a memorial fountain where water poured out of bronze American Bison heads. Check out other close up details of this monument.
The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Monument remembers all the conflicts fought by Indiana, from wars with the Indians through Spanish-American War.
Formerly known as Obelisk Square, the Veteran's Memorial Plaza sits between the Indiana World War Memorial and the American Legion Mall. In the center is the Obelisk Fountain and north of that is the 100 foot, black granite Obelisk, sculpted by Henry Henring in 1929. Four bronze tablets, representing law, science, religion and education, surround the structure.
