I think everyone should visit...
by mozart1
I think everyone should visit downtown Indianapolis. The Circle Center Mall is located downtown. The mall has a lot of shops, a movie theater and also there are some nightclubs to visit in the evening. We host the Indianapolis 500 in the month of May. This is a great opportunity to meet people from a lot of different places.
Monument Circle: Circle of lights Tradition
by staindesign
I attended this years ceremony, the first time in 8 years of living in Indy. It was just wonderful! From 6-7pm is the preshow and then from 7-8pm is the actual show that is televised. At 7.50 the tree/monument is lite up, carrols are sang, and fireworks explode above. This city knows how to ring in Christmas. The crowds are large and it is best to arrive early and dress warm!
It takes a lot to get the place decorated, more than 200 volunteer union electricians string 4,784 lights on 52 garland strands each 215 ft. long in November and then return in January to take them down. There are 6 huge lighted raindeer and about 25 lighted trees. Around the circle are 8ft. tall nutcracker soldiers and all of the trees are strung with lights. The surrounding buildings are light up with colored lights and in the windows they usually make an image of a green christmas tree.
Sandwiches that are unique
by Toughluck about Dufour's in Irvington
In a restored old building along East Washington (the old National Road) and U.S. 40 is Dufour's. This was once the busling center of the eastside of Indianapolis. Today, the homes are still grand and the neighborhoods beautiful. The main street has been ravaged by the development of shopping malls and super stores along the outer belt of the city. Now in restoration, Dufour's reveals the quiet charm of days long gone.
The food is well done, sandwiches with the added touch of fruit, exotic cheese or unique breads. GLORIFIED GRILLED CHEESE

Indianapolis Ice (hockey) game...
by descolada99
Indianapolis Ice (hockey) game at the Pepsi Coliseum.
Pepsi Coliseum is part of the Indiana State Fairgrounds, nestled between Fall Creek Blvd and 38th Street. An old building (I beleive build back in the depression), it has hosted everything: presidential speeches (Kennedy), concerts (the Beatles), livestock shows, basketball games (the original home of the Indiana Pacers) and hockey games. There's a ton of history there and it's great fun to check it out while watching an Indianapolis Ice game.
The Ice are a part of the Central Hockey League, and were teh league's champions in 2000. Indianapolis hockey actually has some history to it. They wont he Turner Cup while a part of the IHL, had a goalie play in teh Winter Olympics back in the early 90's sometime, and was Wayne Gretsky's first pro team (the Indianpolis Racers as a part of the WHL for one season).
Walker Building
by sambarnett
Following her divorce, Madame C.J. Walker, daughter of Louisiana slaves, moved her cosmetics and hair care business from Denver to Indianapolis. Business flourished and she became the first African American female millionaire. Walker passed away in 1919 and this wedge-shaped building was built in 1927 under the direction of her daughter A'Lelia.
Located at the triangular intersection of West Street, Indiana Avenue, MLK Jr. Street and North Street, this building was the focal point for Indy's famed Indiana Avenue black community. Great black artists like the Ink Spots, Ella Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker and local guitar legend Wes Montgomery all graced the stage here. Renovated in the early 1980s, the Walker Building serves as a center of Indy's black culture.
