Travel Tips for Indianapolis

Tipping

by sticki

I know tipping can vary state to state, and certainly country to country. Restaurants in Indianapolis should be a 10%-15% tip, depending on service. Remember, wait staff in Indy as a rule make less than half of minimum wage an hour.

Ultra-Modern Indoor Commons

by deecat

Between Third and Fourth streets on Washington and Brown streets, there is an unusual building called The Commons. Jill and I assumed that it was an indoor mall, but we did not see any stores. There were places to eat similar to the usual indoor mall. There was a gigantic open area with playground equipment for small children.

There was also a very unique art sculpture. We found that the sculpture, which features motion, is called "Chaos I". It is 35 feet tall and weighs 7 tons! This kinetic sculpture is by Jean Tinguely. It seems to be the focal point on the first floor.

The building, designed by Cesar Pelli, includes a public hall, indoor park and playground, performing arts center, and an Art Gallery with changing exhibits. Columbus Museum of Art and Design is also at The Commons on the second floor. (10-5 Tuesday through Saturday & noon to 4 on Sunday).

It is strikingly modern; yet, it blends in the the older historic buildings.

Traditional Thai

by djramey about Thai House

When I first discovered the Thai House on another website it was described as in the following. "This place is a dive, but the food is some of the best Thai in Indy." Fortunately for myself and my dinning companion on the latter held true.

The food was indeed very good, and the decor of the place was hardly what one would describe as a dive. Walls lined with original Thai art, instruments and photographs, the restuarant gives those here in Indianapolis a sense of what may resemble in the least a bit of Thailand.

The restaurant staff, which on this night consisted of three likely relatives, were very kind and keen to start conversation with us. This may be the case due to the fact we were the only two patrons in the restaurant at nine o'clock on a Saturday evening, but one would rather believe it's due to stunning hospitality. On the night of our visit we ordered chicken satay for an apitizer and mussaman curry as the entre. The curry comes in 4 levels of spicyness (mild, medium, hot and super hot), and loving hot/spicy foods I ordered the hot.

Suffice to say that the chef came to check on this gringo midway through dinner. My bravery was high and my masculinity did not suffer either at this point, but when the evening finished and our bill paid I had to lay the seat of the car down to allow my roasted insides to relax. The curry was very hot, but very good.

Monument Circle - Center of Town

by Toughluck

The Monument on Monument Circle is dedicated to the veterans of the American Civil War. It was completed in 1902 and stands 284' (87m) tall. Underneath is the Col. Eli Lilly Civil War Museum. It is an excellent museum of Indiana's involvement in the war. You can ride the elevator to the top of the momument (rain or shine) and look over the city. It's nicer when the sun is out, or atleast not raining.

Indiana State Museum

by djramey

Housing the famous IMAX Theater, the Indiana State Museum has much more to offer than the enormous film theater. In the Crossroads of America that is the state of Indiana, this museum is a crossroads of everything apparent and important to its state. Original works of art, exhibits that you can interact with, and amazing architecture inside, the Indiana State Museum is one of brilliance. You will walk up to the building in awe of its outside structure, but once inside you will be amazed by the amount of inventory and entertainment you will find.

Visit for the IMAX and stay for the exhibits. Bring the children for their education or bring a date for some spur of the moment entertainment. Enjoy the African American Legacy area, or eat at the outdoor cafe. It's great!
