Shrine of Christ's Passion
Located in St. John, about 5 miles (3.5 km) south on U.S. 41, this site is worth a trip if you're spending time in Merrillville. More people stay in Merrillville than St. John, so it's appropriate here. The Shrine is brand new in 2009. It's a life size creation of the last week of the Life of Jesus Christ. It spread along a half mile walk. You'll witness the events in this remarkable week in a way you've never done it before. Be party to the last supper. Stand there along the roadway as Jesus stumbles and falls under the weight of the cross. Watch as a soldier strips him of his clothes. Feel the agony of each nail as they're driven deep into the wood. You'll stand before the crucified body as one thief chides Jesus for not saving himself and is defended by the thief on his right. You'll even witness the resurrection.
