Travel Tips for Michigan City

Don't miss the neighboring towns

by Toughluck

Michigan City can be an excellent base of operations to see northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. Beaches and dunes spread north and west from Michigan City along the shores of Lake Michigan. Orchards and vineyards are within an hour or two of town. Festivals proliferate throughout the fall in this area. For details, try some of the neighboring towns:

Valparaiso, Porter; Chesterton, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Indiana Dunes State Park, Hebron, Michigan City, Kouts

Wanatah

by Toughluck

Wanatah is a crossing on US 30 and US 421. It grew out of a crossing of the Monon Railroad and the Pennsylvania Central Railroad. While it is not particularly famous, it is one of the locations that the Lincoln Funeral train stopped for a brief moment on it's way from Washington, D.C. to Springfield, IL.

Michigan City

by sambarnett

Michigan City has spent the past few years cleaning itself up. I hadn't been here in a few years but noticed a remarkable difference; everything seemed cleaner and brighter.

Still, the giant NIPSCO plant and cooling tower on the lakefront are ghastly, belching out tiny microfibers that do all kinds of terrible things to one's lungs. The nearby Long Beach section is loaded with as many overcrowded, gaudy beach homes and apartments as you'd find in any European coastal resort. Try to look straight ahead if you visit, the view is much prettier.
